10 PARISH NEWS - VBS 2016 With a grateful heart, we thank Lord Almighty for all the blessings showered during the VBS By His Grace, we had a blessed VBS from 17th to 24th June 2016 with the participation of 803 registered students, about 200 VBS staff / volunteers and prayerful participation of many parents, guests and parish members. About 571 participants availed the bus transportation arranged for the VBS. This year VBS was held under the leadership of our Vicar Rev. Thomas Zachariah, Asst. Vicar Rev. Joe Mathew, Youth Chaplain Rev. Roby J. Mathew and VBS Director Rev. Thomas John (Jeslin). Convenor Mr. Nibin Oommen, joint convenors Mr. Ebenezer Philip & Mr. Jills Varghese were supported by a group of 18 working committee members and Parish kaisthana samithi. We extend our sincere thanks to one and all who had been a pillar of support and strength for the smooth and successful functioning of the VBS. From the Medical Desk HEALTH AWARENESS by Dr. Abey Abraham ATHELETES FOOT This is a skin infection of the feet caused by Fungus affecting 15% of the population. It commonly involves the area between toes but can affect any part of the feet or even hands. Scientifically the disease is called Dermatophytosis and is caused by Dermatophytes. They are called tinea pedis and many Fungi are responsible. They cause itching, redness and scaling. The area between the 4th and 5th toe (interdigital area) is most commonly involved. Sometimes there is bacterial infection following cracks. Scratching infected areas may also spread the fungus to the fingers. Men and adults are more likely to get this disease. Diabetes and other immunity weakening conditions like Chemotherapy and other infections predispose to this disease. Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating in the palms and feet also predispose to this. They usually occur by contact with infected skin or fungus in public areas like swimming pools, gym changing rooms etc. Prevention is by avoiding walking barefoot in public wet areas like pools, trimming toenails, avoiding tight shoes and personal hygiene measures like changing socks frequently. Treatment is by using antifungal creams (like Lamisil) and hygiene measures. Occasionally antifungal tablets may be required. Treatment may be required for up to 6 weeks. Athletes foot became common in the 20th century when using socks and shoes (especially tight shoes) became more common and so also the use of health clubs. This as a regular coloumn for the benefit of our readers. This is a series of articles which will hopefully increase health awareness among our members and hopefully lead to a change in perspective and focus on better health practices.
