ABDUL KALAM Condolences from the Mar Thoma Parish, Dubai to the people of India and family of the 11th President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam who passed away on 27th July 2015 following a massive cardiac arrest. He will be fondly remembered as a renowned scientist, a People s President and more importantly a humble human being. 9 PARISH NEWS EVENTS OF THE MONTH - JULY 2015 VISITORS AT OUR PARISH Delegates from Al Manara Centre visited our Parish recently. A meeting was held at the EMT hall where the delegates talked about the essence of fasting. YUVAJANA SAKHYAM YOUTH CAMP The Youth Camp organised by Yuvajana Sakhyam was held at the Easow Mar Timotheos Hall on 17th & 18th of July The theme of the camp was Vision of Cross; Mission of Youth. The camp was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Eldhon Edapattu and Rev. P. John Philip, Vicar of Sharjah MTC and presided by our Vicars Rev. Thomas Zachariah, Rev. Benny V. Abraham and Rev. Roby J. Mathew. 10 PARISH NEWS From the Medical Desk HEALTH AWARENESS by Dr. Saly Ravi Jacob MIGRAINE Recurrent attack of headache with associated nausea, vomiting and Photophobia. Pain usually confined to one side of head or eye. Attacks may be preceded by flashes of light due to intra cerebral constriction and followed by head pain due to dilatation of extra cranial arteries. Migraine are usually gradual onset and when in severe, the pain is throbbing and pulsating. More common in women than men and begins mostly in early morning and may last few hours to 3-4 days depends on treatments. Factors triggering migraine are: Hunger, Menstruation or oral contraceptive use, Too little or too much sleep, Eating food contains monosodium glutamate or high caffeine (coffee,tea and colas), Stress in personal life or in work, Drinking alcohol, Environment with strong smell or high attitude or glaring light or weather change, Very common with people have anxiety and depression. Headache is also common with digestive problems like constipation, intestinal toxemia and diseases of eye, nose, sinus and teeth. Anemia, high blood pressure, dehydration (less fluid in the body) and hypoxia can also cause headache. Treatments for Migraine without drugs (Naturopathy) 1. Avoid triggering factors like junk foods, alcohol etc. Increase fluid intake 2. Relaxation training 3. Behavioral therapy- Stress management. Yoga practice and breathing exercises helps to prevent migraine. 4. Regular exercise can reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attack At the time of attack Ice compress to base of head while lying in a darkened room Ice to forehead with simultaneous hot footbath also effective to abort an attack Give the stimulation to the pressure points - The inside of your eyebrows, just above the bridge of your nose. Application of pressure to this point -- can lead to some relief with headaches. The temples - These areas seem to hold a lot of the muscle stress from the rest of the scalp. And gently massaging both temples with your thumbs or fingers can help relieve some of that built-up tension. The base of the skull - here we have some of the primary muscles for the head and neck. Tilt your head back and press upwards in a circular motion. Between the thumb and index finger. There is a pressure point located in this meaty part of the hand. Firmly pinch the area between the thumb and forefinger with the... well, the other thumb and forefinger, and give it a good massage. Lifestyle management especially proper food, proper exercises, deep breathing in well ventilated area, relaxation and right mental attitude can control the attack of Migraine and other headaches. This as a regular coloumn for the benefit of our readers. This is a series of articles which will hopefully increase health awareness among our members and hopefully lead to a change in perspective and focus on better health practices.
