THOMAS MAR THOMA CHURCH OF DELAWARE VALLEY 130 GRUBB RD MALVERN PA Thomachurch.org FEBRUARY 20TH, 2010 The Annual General Body meeting of the St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church of Delaware Valley will be conducted on Sunday, March 14th, 2010 immediately after the Holy Communion service in the church sanctuary, with the following agenda. 6 PREFACE ANNUAL REPORT 2009 John 15:12 - My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. On behalf of Vicar Rev. Abraham Mathew, the 2009 office bearers & Executive Committee and all the members of the St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church of Delaware Valley, we are extremely thankful to God for the blessings God has shared upon us. Briefly, we summarize the activities we have conducted this past calendar year 2009, below. 2009, is a year of stabilization after the completion of our church altar and parsonage construction projects. God has given us the privilege to host Diocesan Assembly, Regional Sevika Sanghom Conference and Regional Youth Fellowship Conference. Our membership grew to 113 families. Rev. Abraham Mathew became the second resident Vicar. VICAR & PRESIDENT As our first Resident Vicar, Rev. Shaji M. Thomas along with his wife Sobha Kochamma, sons Ashish and Joel gracefully completed their service and went back to India in April Our new Vicar and President Rev. Abraham Mathew, along with Sudha Kochamma, Sachin and Sharon have joined us in May Since then Rev. Abraham Mathew has been leading our worship services and all other activities of the parish as the Vicar and President. We sincerely thank Rev. Abraham Mathew s service and leadership in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. May the Lord continue to be with them in their service as a family in our parish and also in the Delaware Valley area. THE PARISH WORSHIP SERVICES We have been conducting Holy Communion services on every Sundays. The first and third and fifth Sundays were conducted in Malayalam and the second and fourth Sundays were conducted in English. Lately, we are conducting praise and worship service on the fifth Sundays. We had a pulpit exchange on March 1st, 2009 and Rev. Mathew K. Jackson (St. John s Mar Thoma Church, Queens, NY), celebrated the Holy Communion with us, while our Vicar Rev. Shaji M. Thomas was deputed to the Philadelphia Mar Thoma Church. In addition to our own vicar, following personnel gave sermons from the word of God during the past year of 2009: Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Episcopa, Rt. Rev. John (Retd), Rev. Vinoy Daniel, Rev. Mathew Skariah (Y.C.), Rev. Roy Thomas (Y.C.), Rev. Philip Varghese (Y. C.), Dr. M. G. Wesley, Mr. Mannoor Thomas, Dr. Vinu George, a youth member from Bethel MTC for praise & worship service, Dr. Mathew Thomas, Mr. K. Varghese, Mr. Vinu Varghese, Mr. Chacko Mathew, Mr. John Mammen, and Mr. Jose George. DIOCESAN EPISCOPAL VISITS Our Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius visited us the weekend of Sunday, April 19 th 2009 and was the chief celebrant for the Holy Communion. We have been blessed by his Godly advices and encouragement, as per the needs of our parish. We wish Thirumeni all the best and pray for 6

7 him to continue his blessed service and leadership in this region, in the name of our Lord Jesus. On April 18 th 2009 Saturday, our parish hosted the Diocesan Assembly meeting with the leadership of Theodosius Thirumeni and almost 70 clergies and with the help of all the parish members. It was a blessed occasion. On August 2nd, 2009 Sunday Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas episcopa from Adoor and Malaysia - Singapore - Australia diocese visited us Thirumeni was the chief celebrant for the Holy Communion. As a parish we celebrated the Grandparents Day & Senior Citizenship day with the presence of Barnabas Thirumeni and we recognized all our senior citizens with a brief program after the communion service. Along with Thirumeni we had Rev. Philip George Vicar of Philly MTC and Rev. M. John, a retired/senior achen for the afternoon HC services. CHURCH OFFICE BEARERS AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE FOR 2009 The Church office bearers were Vicar and President Rev. Abraham Mathew, Vice President Mr. John Philip, Secretary Mr. Jose George, Treasurer Mrs. Rachel Joseph and Accountant Mr. Mathew T. Abraham. In addition we had 2 elected lay leaders, Mr. Alex Jacob and Mr. Robert Joseph. We had 4 prayer group representatives Mr. Koshy Joseph, Mrs. Susan Ebyson, Mr. Mannoor Thomas and Mr. Chacko Thomas representing our Carmel, Horeb, Moriah and Sinai prayer groups. Also we had 8 organizational representatives. They were Dr. George Abraham, Mr. T. M. Chandy, Mrs. Thankamma Thomas, Mr. Thomas Samuel, Mr. Joel Koshy, Mr. Mammen John, Mr. Joseph Mathew & Mr. Thomas Philips representing, Sunday School, Edavaka Mission, Sevika Sanghom, Yuvajana Sakhyam, Youth Fellowship, Choir, Diocesan Assembly and Mandalam. PARISH MEMBERSHIP UPDATE As of December 31st 2009, we are blessed to have total 113 families including our Vicar s family. GENERAL BODY AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETINGS We have conducted total five (5) General body meetings and ten (10) executive committee meetings as per the needs of the parish during the year of 2009 with the leadership of our previous Vicar Rev. Shaji M Thomas and our current vicar Rev. Abraham Mathew. AREA PRAYER MEETINGS Based on the geographic location of the residences of our 113 families, we have four (4) active prayer groups divided as Carmel, Horeb, Moriah and Sinai. It was remarkable that our youth were effectively participating in good numbers in all the prayer meetings. At the same time, we like to remind you that strengthening our prayer groups is one of the areas that we can improve in the coming years. We need your sincere prayer and participation to use our prayer meetings to strengthen our spiritual growth and fellowship within the parish. CHURCH BUILDING PROJECTS 1) Cook Book: This Project is underway and most planning, design and review activities are complete under the leadership of Mrs. Shiny Thomas. 2) Gift Card: Mrs. Liza Mathew & Mrs. Susan Ebyson with the help of many others 7

8 coordinated this project and is successfully underway, generating 3-5K per year in revenues towards Church Building Projects. 3) Souvenir Project: A church souvenir is in progress, with the leadership of Mr. Mathews T Mathews as convener which has helped our church finances. The release of this souvenir is expected in the first quarter of SUNDAY SCHOOL Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not turn from it. Proverbs 22: was a blessed year for our Sunday school. With 68 students and 8 graduate students, this year, each grade had at least two primary teachers. This reduced the burden on teachers as well as it guided new teachers who were in training. Twenty kids participated in the diocesan exam of which ten students scored distinctions. Students participated in the following programs: student dedication and teacher s dedication, world Sunday school day, regional competitions held at Ascension Mar Thoma Church, fundraising programs to support the Sunday school activities, Christmas carol service, parents day celebrations. Our Sunday school hosted the annual general body meeting of the South East Region. The Sunday school coordinated another year of very fun filled The theme for Vacation Bible School this year was Studio Go. We sincerely thank Rev. Shaji M Thomas and Rev. Abraham Mathew who led us through out the year. Above all we thank God Almighty for his divine guidance and blessings. As we move forward, let us continue to keep the future of this parish and our children in the forefront of our prayers. May God continue to bless us. We celebrated World Sunday School day along with our 4th Parish day and Family Sunday combined, on November 1st, As a parish, we sincerely thank the service and leadership of Dr. George Abraham and all the Sunday School teachers during the year of for our Sunday School. For the new school year of , we have elected Mr. John Philip as the new headmaster and a dedicated team of teachers with commitment to teach the Word of God to our children. Please continue to pray for this vital organization which develops our children, who are the future of our parish. EDAVAKA MISSION The Voluntary Evangelistic Association was founded in 1924 under the initiatives of Most Rev Dr Abraham Mar Thoma with the objective to lead every member of the Mar Thoma Sabha to a spirit filled Christian life. Mr. T.M. Chandy, Mr. Cherian C. Cherian and Mr. Mathew Baby served as Secretary, Vice President and Treasurer respectively during the year. Intercessory prayers were conducted every Friday evening at the Church and Bible Study every Sunday morning by Rev. Abraham Mathew and Mr. Jose George. We also conducted 3 day Retreat at the Malvern Retreat Centre under the leadership of Rev. Abraham Mathew. There were good representation from our Church for the Regional Edavaka Mission Conferences conducted at Randolf Church, Washington Church and Bethel Mar Thoma Church. We provided financial assistance to one Evangelist (Mr. M.K. Samuel) in Kerala for the Medical Treatment of his wife. 8

9 ANNUAL CONVENTION Annual Gospel convention of the parish was organized by Edavaka Mission from July 24th to 26 th, 2009 at our Church. The main speaker of the convention was Dr. M.G. Wesley from Florida, and the theme was Jesus and our daily struggles. The convention was well attended by the parish members and members from sister parishes. It was a great blessing for our parish. RETREAT The Edavaka Mission jointly organized a 3 day weekend retreat from Friday August 7th, to Sunday August 9th, 2009 at Malvern Retreat Center at 315 S Warren Ave, Malvern, PA The retreat was fun filled with various activities and a memorable talent night session. Youth Chaplain, Rev. Roy Thomas also attended. INTERCESSORY PRAYERS In addition to the above events, Edavaka mission conducts intercessory prayers and Bible Study under the leadership of our Vicar every Friday at 7.00 p.m. at the church. Achen lead the study based on I Corinthians. We encourage more members to join this fellowship and be blessed and be a blessing for each other. BIBLE STUDY Many members of our parish members and some times visiting guests meet regularly on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. before the worship at the Church for Bible Study, discussion and fellowship. Our Vicar Rev. Abraham Mathew and Mr. Jose George and Mr. Philip Mathew, lead the group in bible study during this past year of We have been studying from Gospel According to John during the year of 2009 using different versions of scripture, bible maps, and bible commentaries with the help of visual aids. CHOIR The St. Thomas MTC of Delaware Valley choir exists to lead and assist people in the worship of God. The choir maintains a rigorous commitment and standard of excellence that are respected and emulated in the field of church music. Last year, the St. Thomas Singers, under the leadership of Mr. Yohannan Chacko, Mr. Ani Alexander and Mr. Mammen John took part in music ministry during the following: New year 2009 Sunday Worship services (English and Malayalam) Passion week (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter) Bishop s reception and visit Convention 2009 Christmas carol service The variety of music at St Thomas MTC - from Malayalam Classical to Maramon songs, Gospel and Traditional to Praise and Worship reveals the true nature of this community. The repertoire of the performance reflects both its primary role as a liturgical choir and its role in the larger Delaware Valley Mar Thoma choral community. The Christmas carol service singing was well done by the leadership of Dr. Cherian C. Verghese, Mr. Pramod Thomas, Mr. Jobin Philip, Mr. Mammen John, Mrs. Jolly Koshy, Mrs. Betty Chandy and 9

10 many others. Finally, as executive committee we thank Rev. Shaji M. Thomas and Rev. Abraham Mathew for their guidance and support for our choir as well as our almighty God for his grace and blessings he has showered upon all of us. Our parish is blessed with a very dedicated and hard-working choir. All your choir members take their responsibilities seriously. Please continue to keep all choir members in your prayers as they strive to serve God and our church. Once again, we thank the leadership of Mr. Yohannan Chacko, Mr. Ani Alexander, Dr. Cherian C. Verghese, Mr. Pramod Thomas, Mr. Jobin Philip, Mr. Mammen John, Mrs. Jolly Koshy, Mrs. Betty Chandy and many others. SUVISHESHA SEVIKA SANGHAM The Sevika Sanghom is a major part of our church activities and they have supported the following various functions in the parish. The past year we hosted the 13th South East Regional Sevika Sanghom Conference this year on Saturday March 14th. We specially thank all who worked hard to host this conference for the first time in our parish. It was a major step forward. Our Achen conducts a Bible Study every month and encourages all the Sevika Sanghom members using the word of God. Sevika Sanghom conducted a bake sale and $500 was sent to Kerala for a marriage fund. With Mrs. Annie Chacko and the leadership of many others Sevika Sanghom actively collected non-perishable food and supported the outreach ministry. Sevika Sanghom also helps our parish during Christmas program and all other major functions by serving refreshments and food etc. As a parish, we thank the service and leadership of Mrs. Thankamma Thomas (Secretary) & Mrs. Susan Chacko (Treasurer) and all the Sevika Sanghom members. YUVAJANA SAKHYAM God again has showered us with his bountiful blessings throughout the year As always, the STMTC of Delaware Valley Yuvajana Sakhyam members are actively involved in all functions of our parish and the Diocese. St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church of Delaware Valley Yuvajana Sakhyam is blessed to have many dedicated and talented members. The YS members supported the successful organization of the Diocesan Assembly Meeting held at our church. Our members Mr. Alex Pappachen and Mr. Yohannan Chacko won many prizes at the Regional and zonal YS competitions. Mr. Alex Jacob representing the YS rendered a moving send-off speech and presented a token of our appreciation to the outgoing Vicar Rev. Shaji M. Thomas. Two of our members attended the 11th National Yuvajana Sakhyam Conference held in NY from Oct 9th - 11th. The week of Oct 11th was observed as the Yuvajana Sakhyam week and the 18th commemorated as the YS Sunday. Mr. Alexander Pappachen represented our YS as the guest speaker at the Ascension Mar Thoma church. In coordination with the youth fellowship, the YS successfully conducted our first Talent Night on Sep 26th, Our members also participated in the zonal YS Christmas carol service RAGADHARA held in NY on Dec 27th, St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church of Delaware Valley Yuvajana Sakhyam thanks our former vicar Rev. Shaji M. Thomas and our present Vicar Rev. Abraham Mathew for their guidance and leadership as well as all the members of our parish for their contributions to the Yuvajana Sakhyam. Finally, thanks to our Lord Almighty for providing us help and support in all our activities. We thank the leadership of Mr. Thomas Samuel and Mr. Ebyson Thomas and many others in Yuvajana Sakhyam. 10

11 YOUTH FELLOWSHIP 2009 was a very blessed year for the youth fellowship of St. Thomas Delaware Valley. God is ever loving and showered us with his abundant grace. Shaji Achan and family helped us partly through the year and then we were blessed with the presence of Rev. Abraham Mathew and family after Shaji Achen s departure. We want to express our sincere gratitude to Rev. Abraham Mathew and family for their leadership, service and wisdom throughout the year. Youth Fellowship along with the parish members gave a farewell to Rev. Mathew Skariah and welcomed Rev. Roy Thomas and Rev. Philp Verghese. Youth Fellowship tried to have a meeting twice a month at church which included planning of youth events and bible studies. Usually two people volunteered to do a bible study. On fifth Sundays, youth fellowship leads the praise & worship service coordinated by Mr. Jobin Philip. St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church of Delaware Valley hosted the regional youth conference for the Spring of It was held on Saturday April 11, The theme of the conference was Wings of Hope. The speaker was Jamie Kadavil and the verse for the conference was Isaiah 40:31 The T-shirt Fundraising was coordinated by Sherin George. As a youth group we sold T-shirts to raise money for Mexico Mission. The slogan for the T-shirts was Walk Run Shore. The T-shirts were sold at the Spring conference which was hosted in April and individually by the members of our youth. We made a total of $800 from selling them. For the VBS, the youths participated by helping with singing session, crafts and teaching the younger classes. The youth session of the convention was held on Saturday July 25, 2009 at 10 am at St. Thomas Delaware Valley. The speaker was Dr. M.G Wesley who spoke on the topic of prayer. St. Thomas Delaware Valley held a bone marrow drive on Sunday August 16, 2009 for Sam with Leukemia. Princy Varghese a member of Staten Island MTC and two of Sam s family members came to our parish. There was a table set up in the front of our church for any one who wanted to contribute to the cause. For the Family Retreat of 2009, the youths participated by leading praise & Worship and performing a dance for the Talent Show. Reshma Samkutty and Daniel George worked with the other coordinators to plan the first St. Thomas Delaware Valley Cultural program (talent night) for The youth participated by singing, dancing and participating in the fashion show. The youth and Sunday school worked together with Jobin Philip, who was the conductor this year for the Christmas Program. Youth Fellowship performed a play called The best part of Christmas. A large majority of the youths took part in the church Christmas choir and performed a variety of Christmas songs. Many of our Youths attended the Fall conference was hosted by Greater Washington on November 28, MARRIAGES, BAPTISM, NEW BIRTHS & FIRST COMMUNION Following families had the joyful occasions of weddings, new births and baptisms. Congratulations to all of you. As a parish, as one family, we share the pain with you. We encourage you with the hope and comfort from the Word of God and in Christ Jesus and his eternal promises of eternal life with him forever. (#73 Springfield Prayer Group) Mother of our member Mrs. Ponnamma Samkutty (Mrs. Thankamma Thomas 89 years) was called to eternity on June 20th Saturday at Kadambanad, Kerala. (#37 Moriah Prayer Group) Rev. P.C. John Achen (87 years), father of our member Mr. Mammen John (Sasan) was called to eternity at Kumbanadu, Kerala. (#28 Horeb Prayer Group) Mother of our member Mr. Philip Thomas (Mrs. Aliyamma Thomas 92 years), Nellimoottil House, Manjadi, Thiruvalla, Kerala was called to eternity. (#76 Sinai Prayer group) Father s Sister of our members Mr. Aniyan Kunju K. & Mrs. Lizy Varghese was called to eternity on July 2nd at Thadiyoor, Kerala. (#107 Moriah Prayer Group) Father of our member Mr. Varghese Pathisseril (Mr. Mathews Pathisseril 68 years) was called to eternity early in Florida, USA. 13 PASSION WEEK (APRIL 5TH APRIL 12TH) We had Rev. Shaji M. Thomas Achen s leadership all through the Passion Week services, including the sandhya namaskaram, Good Friday service and special Easter Service. CHURCH PICNIC On August 15th we had a fun-filled church picnic at Evansburg Park, Collegeville organized by Mr. Koshy Joseph, Mr. Mammen John, Mr. Ebyson Thomas and many other parish members. Thanks to all of you that it was great fellowship and so much fun. HARVEST FESTIVAL The third Harvest Festival was held on September 20 th, 2009 and we were able to raise $20,506 by the incredible involvement of the parish members. Thanks to all of you. 4TH PARISH DAY & FAMILY SUNDAY We celebrated our 4th Parish day combined with Family Sunday & World Sunday School day on November 1st, After the special Holy Communion service, we conducted a special meeting to celebrate this blessed occasion. Rev. Vinoy Daniel Achen (Diocesan Bishop's Secretary of North America, UK & Europe) was our special guest for this occasion and Achen conducted the Holy Communion service along with our Vicar. We conducted a one day income offertory on this day and we thank all the parish members who supported our church financial situation with their generous contributions and it turned out to be a great success. DOOR-TO-DOOR CAROL SERVICES As usual, this year s door-to-door Carol service was a successful and fun-filled activity. We thank all the families who were able to host this great event of fellowship at Christmas time. As a parish we thank the leadership of Mr. Samkutty Kunjachen, Mr. Thomas Philips, Mr. Joseph George (Lalu), and many others who made the door-to-door caroling a blessed event. THE CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION Christmas service and Christmas pageant were conducted on December 25th, We had the presence of Dr. Vinu George and Dr. Ashley George. Dr. Vinu was the main speaker for this occasion to deliver the message from the word of God. We thank the efforts of our Choir for the outstanding carol singing and Sevika Sanhgham and Edavaka mission members for the refreshments served. XXVI MAR THOMA FAMILY CONFERENCE Our Vicar, Rev. Abraham Mathew attended the 27th Mar Thoma Family Conference of the Diocese of North America & Europe from July 5 th through 9 th 2009 at Houston. 13

14 OUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT On Sunday December 14th, 2009 the church premises were used for the 20th Annual Jingle Bell Run 5K Run/Walk for PA Arthritis foundation. Outreach Ministry Mrs. Annie Chacko has started an outreach program with the help of Sevika Sanghom, by collecting non-perishable foods and distributing to the financially poor people in the community through the coordinated effort of Emergency Food Bank in First Methodist Church at Media, Delaware County. Under the leadership and initiative of Mr. Joseph Mathew on we have been participating in the Ecumenical activities during the Christmas time. This year Mr. Joseph Mathew, Mr. Yohannan Chacko and Mr. Alex Pappachen conducted stage presentations. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT Our trustees have provided periodic financial reports and the status were periodically reviewed by the executive committee. As a parish we sincerely thank Mrs. Rachel Joseph and Mr. Mathew T. Abraham for the remarkable service and leadership they have done as the trustees during the year We thank Mr. Mathew Abraham & Mr. Mathew Chacko for conducting the account auditing.
