10 PARISH NEWS From the Medical Desk HEALTH AWARENESS by Dr. Abey Abraham BELL S PALSY Sir Charles Bell described this disease in 1829 as a paralysis of the nerve in the face (The Facial Nerve) causing a weakness of one half of the face. The cause is unknown in the majority of patients but rarely may be due to a brain tumor, stroke or Myasthenia gravis. The patient will be unable to control the muscles of the face usually on one side hence he will be unable to close his eyelids, blow his cheek, move his lips to the weaker side, lift his eyebrows on the affected side and he will notice a slanting or pulling of his lips to the normal side and a poor taste sensation on his tongue. Often the eye in the affected side cannot be closed tightly. The eye must be protected from drying up, or the cornea may be permanently damaged resulting in impaired vision. So the affected eye should be taped shut at night to prevent drying. Artificial tears may be used. Steroids are given initially and help in recovery. Anti-viral medications are routinely given because a link between herpes virus infection and bell s palsy is suspected but are not of benefit. Physiotherapy sessions for the facial nerve are beneficial. Most people with Bell s palsy recover completely within 3 weeks. Rarely there is complications like the chronic loss of taste, Facial spasms and the crocodile tear syndrome where the person has tears while eating!! PS : a search for celebrities with Bell s palsy on Google showed up some interesting names including Sylvester Stallone, George Clooney, Anupam Kher and Rahul Dravid! This as a regular coloumn for the benefit of our readers. This is a series of articles which will hopefully increase health awareness among our members and hopefully lead to a change in perspective and focus on better health practices.
