9 From the Medical Desk by Dr. Abey Abraham EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE (EVD) Ebola is a river in Western Africa where the disease was first found in The Bat is thought to harbor the virus and it transmits to primates- monkeys via half eaten fallen fruit. When man comes in contact with these animals by touch or eating meat he is infected and then there is further man to man transmission by contact. Transmission by air is unlikely. Symptoms start within 10 days after contracting the virus, with a fever, sore throat, muscle pain and headaches. Vomiting, diarrhoea & rash follow, along with decreased functioning of the liver & kidneys. About 50% of affected people may begin to bleed both internally and externally leading to the deadly complication known as Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever. Death will result from multiple organ failure and bleeding. Diagnosis is from the medical history of travel and exposure to wildlife and the lab isolation of virus by PCR tests or detection of virus proteins by ELISA tests from blood or fluids from the patient. A person is contagious even after death so handling bodies & tribal burial rituals also contribute to transmission. Prevention is very important as EVD is very contagious and has high mortality (approx. 50%). Avoiding physical contact, using gloves & hand washing with soap are some very simple and effective measures. Boiling for 5 minutes eliminates Ebola. Due to lack of proper equipment and hygienic practices, largescale epidemics have occurred mostly in poor, isolated areas without modern hospitals or well-educated medical staff. There is no specific treatment or Vaccine yet but new research is on-going. Presently treatment aims at supportive care to relieve pain and fever, oxygen support, control dehydration and prevent bleeding tendency. Two experimental drugs called Z-MAPP and TKM EBOLA are being tried. We have introduced this as a regular coloumn for the benefit of our readers. This is a series of articles which will hopefully increase health awareness among our members and hopefully lead to a change in perspective and focus on better health practices. All suggestions are welcome. FAREWELL HEALTH AWARENESS Our senior member Mr. Varghese Philip Chiramel and family is going back to Kerala on 8th Sep 2014 after living 39 years in Dubai. He has been very active member and served our parish in various positions, 20 years in VBS as Security staff, served as Al Qusais area committee member for 2 years and elected and served as Diocesan Assembly Member in 2002 and Their sons Jijo Chiramel & family and Jino Chiramel & family will be continuing as our parish members. Daughter Jisha Chiramel & family settled in Canada. He hails from Mulakkuzha, Chengannor and his home parish is St. Thomas MTC Mulakkuzha.Their contact address in India will be and we wish them a blessed and peaceful life. Our senior member Mr. J. G. 11 INDIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY EVENTS OF AUGUST 2014 COUPON INAUGURATION Indian Independence Day at our Church was celebrated by the Yuvajana Sakhyam with a flag hoisting by Very Rev. K. O. Philipose in the presence of our Vicar Rev. Dr. Daniel Mammen and Asst. Vicar Rev. Benny V. Abraham. Many of the Sakhyam members attended the flag hoisting ceremony. Yuvajana Sakhyam Onasadhya coupon inaugration was done last week. Here you see the first coupon being handed over to Mr. Titus Pullooran from our Vicar Rev. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2014 Vacation Bible School 2014 was held at our Church between 22nd and 29th August The theme this year was Treasures in Clay. Around 650 students and over 150 teachers and volunteers participated this year s VBS. Rev. Byju Samuel was the VBS Director. The joy on the faces of our children, enthusiasm of our teaching community, the dedication of the VBS team, commitment of our parents, the festive ambience created around the church all added to the excitement of this year s VBS which ended with a colourful finale last Friday. 12 AN OUTREACH MISSION Adding another milestone to our church ministry, the month of August saw the inauguration of a new programme called as Outreach Mission. Our Vicar Rev. Dr. Daniel Mammen inaugurated the Outreach MIssion Programme last month. The objective of this programme is to provide medical aids, counselling and arrange regular visits to support various needs of less privileged community living in bachelor accommodation and other areas and moreover to bring them close to church and church activities. The plan is to reach out to the camps once a month and meet with them and fellowship with them.
