I am looking forward to getting to know everyone on a personal basis. I strongly encourage our new Brother Knights to get involved. I can assure you that there will be something to do. 2 Answers on Page 5 The Knights host Simple Supper: On February 19 th, the Knights of Columbus Council hosted a simple supper after 6:00pm Thursday mass. The soups were delicious and so was the company!! Parliament and Procedures by Advocate Randy Hirsch The History of the Knights of Columbus: Ten part series Part : Everybody Welcome, Everything Free As membership in the Knights of Columbus grew, the Order became increasingly known as a force for public good. Following the dedication ceremony for the Christopher Columbus Memorial Fountain in Washington, D.C., in 1912, a reporter for The Washington Star noted that the large number of Knights in attendance marked anew the important position of the Knights of Columbus as an order in the social fabric of the United States. In response to growing anti- Catholic hostility and the rise of socialism, two Knights, David Goldstein and Peter W. Collins, embarked on an extensive, 27,000-mile lecture tour throughout North America in Later that same year, the Order established the K of C Commission on Religious Prejudice. The commission s work concluded in 1917, when the United States entered World War I. During the Great War, the Order provided rest and recreational facilities and social services to Allied servicemen of all faiths. K of C Huts throughout the United States and Europe provided religious services, supplies and recreation under the motto, Everybody Welcome, Everything Free. Everybody meant everybody. Whatever your race or creed, you were welcome at K of C facilities. In fact, the Order was praised by a contemporary African American historian of World War I, because unlike the other social welfare organizations operating in the war, it never drew the color line. As a result of the Order s wartime work, which earned high praise from Pope Benedict XV, nearly 400,000 men joined the Knights between 1917 and : Notre Dame Council 1477 is chartered in the spring of 1910, becoming the first of nearly 250 college councils worldwide. 1912: With support from the Knights, the Christopher Columbus Memorial Fountain is dedicated in Washington, D.C. Some 20,000 Knights attend the ceremonies, which are overseen by President William H. Taft. 2

3 1914: Tens of thousands of copies of a bogus oath are circulated to defame the Knights of Columbus. The Knights, in turn, lay the groundwork for a lecture series and educational programs to combat anti-catholic hostility. Between 1914 and 1917, the number of anti-catholic publications drops from 60 to fewer than five. 1916: When National Guardsmen are sent to the U.S.-Mexico border to prevent Mexican Gen. Francisco Pancho Villa from raiding towns in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, K of C councils in those states spontaneously respond to the religious and social needs of troops serving there. 1917: When the United States enters World War I, Supreme Knight Flaherty writes President Woodrow Wilson telling him that the Order plans to establish centers to provide for the troops recreational and spiritual comfort. The Knights services, he says, will be offered regardless of creed. 1917: By the summer of 1917, the Order opens service centers, or K of C Huts, in training camps and behind the lines of battle. The Knights and independent fund drives raise nearly $30 million to finance the huts. Something Four the Golfers: On June 15 th, 2015 the Fraternal Order of Police are holding a Golf fundraiser at the Hickory Hills Golf Course in Grove City. Check out page 10 for details. Plan for this Tax Day and into the Future April 15 (tax day) is right around the corner. It s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a taxsavings vehicle. 4 Aid will be distributed by Catholic Church in violence-torn country As the violent conflict in Ukraine continues to create an enormous humanitarian disaster in the freezing winter months, the Knights of Columbus is providing $400,000 to relief programs sponsored by the Catholic Church in Ukraine. Gifts by the Knights of $200,000 each to the Greek and Latin Rite Catholic communities of Ukraine are being used for humanitarian relief, including projects that feed and aid homeless children and refugees living on the streets of the capital city of Kiev. During their ad limina visit with Pope Francis on Feb. 20, the pope assured the Latin and Greek bishops of Ukraine that the Holy See is at your side, and urged them to be attentive and considerate to the poor. The Knights of Columbus gifts have been sent to Ukrainian Greek Catholic Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk and Roman Catholic Archbishop Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki. Too often, the conflict in Ukraine is discussed purely in military or geopolitical terms, while the most vulnerable and marginalized the young and old, the poor, the sick, and the increasing number of refugee families are almost invisible to the outside world, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. Our support is meant to further enable the bishops of Ukraine as they help their people and further implement the Holy Father s call to aid those most in need. Working in the midst of uncertainty, many of the Catholic efforts are designed to help provide a social safety net for the needy, especially orphans and children who are separated from their parents. The programs attempt to carry out in a practical way the spiritual message of Pope Francis. Speaking about the care of migrant and itinerant people, he said: Let us not forget the flesh of Christ, which is in the flesh of refugees: their flesh is the flesh of Christ. The Knights of Columbus began working in Ukraine at the invitation of Church leadership in A formal presence was established in 2013, and the organization Longtime member and friend of the Knights of Columbus passes away at age 82. Cardinal Egan at the 2007 Supreme Council States Dinner Members of the Knights of Columbus were saddened by the news of the death of Cardinal Edward Egan, the former archbishop of New York, who died on Thursday, March 5. "The 1.8 million members of Knights of Columbus and I join Catholics in New York and throughout the world in mourning the death of Cardinal Edward Egan," said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. "Cardinal Egan was always a friend of the 4

5 Knights of Columbus. He was a brother Knight and a regular participant over the years at our annual Supreme Convention at which he addressed our convention attendees on several occasions. As we pause to remember his life, and his ministry, we ask all people of faith to join with us in prayer for him, that the Lord may grant his devoted servant eternal rest in heaven." Cardinal Egan joined the Knights of Columbus in 1992 as a member St. Frances X. Cabrini Council 4096 in Bridgeport, Conn. He attended numerous Knights of Columbus events, delivered the keynote address at the 2003 Supreme Convention States Dinner and gave remarks at the 2008 Supreme Convention States Dinner. In addition, he made the invocation at several other state council dinners. He also participated in the Order's Neighbors Helping Neighbors summit on volunteerism, held as a response to the economic recession in Cardinal Egan was ordained for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1957 and appointed as bishop of the Bridgeport in He was appointed archbishop of New York in 2000 and made cardinal in Tony s Trivia Answers: 1. They talk about many different aspects of our faith - hope, joy, loss, grief, etc. - and how we relate to God. The Church has a tradition, since long before the time of Jesus, to pray these Psalms throughout the day, and today this day all clerics and religious make a vow 5

6 to pray these Psalms throughout the day, just like the Jewish people did thousands of years ago. 8 Mike Meyer Dean Headley Matt Huffman The Minutes of preceding meeting were: Michael Korson made a motion to accept the meeting minutes as read and was second by Bill Penquite. The motion Passed. Financial Secretary s report: The Council has 100 members. 63 members have paid to date more are expected to pay. There was a brief discussion on cutting more non paying members from the membership roll. Unfinished business was taken up and disposed of as follows: 30 signs will be ordered for the Pasta Dinners at a cost of $ They are 18 X24. They will be printed with this year s dinner dates and the dates will be able to be patched over with future dates. Skeeter Nelson reported that council sponsored a Super Bowl Pizza Party that Larry Elkins hosted for the Youth Group. The following new business was brought up: Skeeter Nelson introduced new council member Lawrence Krist who took his 1 st Degree on Sunday at Holy Family. A 2 nd and 3 rd Degree will be held on February 22 nd at the Brice X Center at St Andrew, beginning at 11:30am. Chef Steve Rice will Chair the meatless pasta dinners on the last three Fridays of Lent which are March 13 th, 20 th, and 27 th. Volunteers are needed. Volunteers must be able to follow orders from Steve Rice with no back talk. Steve will begin cooking around 2:00 pm, so volunteers are asked to arrive early. The council members are asked to supply deserts. Dinner is served from 4:30 to 7:00. The Charity Tickets were distributed to the members. Early turn in is April 10 th. The council receives $2.40 for each ticket turned in early. Final ticket turn in is May 1 st. Last year the Charity Ticket Sales brought in $850, to the KofC to be used for charity expenses. The March 19 th meeting will be moved to March 26 th due to the St. Joseph Dinner being held on March 19 th. The Insurance Agent reported as follow: Skeeter Nelson reported that Mark Mandel was attending the reinstatement ceremony of 8

9 the Holy Family KofC Council. The District Deputy reported as follows: Mike Reinhard stressed that the Charity money account must be kept separate per IRS regulations.
