The Supreme Knight also cited some of the major accomplishments of the Order: the further development of the Knights of Columbus' Building the Domestic Church initiative and continued support for Christians at risk, including those 1

2 suffering genocide at the hands of ISIS. At the opening of his report, the Supreme Knight officially announced the Convention theme. "We also recall the words of Pope Francis, Supreme Knight Anderson said, He has called Catholics to a new sense of missionary discipleship and fraternal brotherhood. He has urged Catholics to go out to the peripheries. And he has placed great confidence in the Knights of Columbus. And so, I am pleased to announce the theme of our 134th Supreme Convention: 'A Light to the Nations.' " Vivat Jesus Tony Sommer, Grand Knight Upcoming Retreat Opportunities: We in the Columbus Area are blessed to have the St. Therese's Retreat Center, which offers periodic retreats put on by the Catholic Laymen's Retreat League. What is a Retreat? A Retreat in many ways is a vacation for the soul. It is a chance for us to take a step back from the rigors of our daily lives, tune out all the noise and distraction in order to refresh our relationship with God. During a retreat, there are typically meditations and spiritual talks along with opportunities for confession, Mass, and other devotionals. There are a couple of weekend Retreats upcoming that you might consider attending: 1. September 9-11 is a Silent Retreat entitled "Taking up the Cross: Becoming Modern Crusaders for the New Jerusalem of Christ." It will be led by Fr. Stephen Dominic Hayes O.P. The contact for reservations is Charles Kielkopf at or kielkopf.1@osu.edu. 2. November 4-6 is an interactive retreat entitled "The 4 Last Things: Judgement, Hell, Purgatory & Heaven." It will be led by Fr. John D. Corbett, O.P. Reservations are handled by Dave Mignerey ( ), Gary Hasson ( ) and Mark Hasson ( ). Both retreats start on Friday at 5:30pm and go until Sunday at 12:30pm. You stay at the Retreat Center throughout the weekend, with meals and room included (everyone gets a private room). The retreats are casual dress. St. Therese's Retreat Center is located at 5277 East Broad St., Columbus, OH Election time is upon us. If we as a Catholic community do not take heed to what is going on around us and make a concerted effort in bringing about a Christian friendly government we will pay the price. Here are your choices: A person with enough money to finance his own campaign, a man with nothing to gain from being president other than to help bring this country back to the great nation it once was, a man who speaks his mind sometimes a little crude, but is taken out of contexts most of the time, a man who knows how to run a business and is not a lifelong politician. However most importantly he has all the dirty politicians, democrat and republican alike, the media, Hollywood etc. trying to stop him. Some of the republicans would rather lose to the opposition than to have their gravy train disrupted. A man who truly represents Noblesse oblige. Second choice. A person who is truly a liar, who has been fired from a law firm because she was caught lying and committing fraud, a person with no moral character, a person who is married to a womanizer and worse, who has been disbarred, impeached and has no moral character what so ever. A woman who has stolen hundreds of 2

3 thousands of dollars of property from the White House when she left. A woman who states she uses one because it is too confusing to handle more than one computer. A woman who has exposed national secrets, a criminal act punishable as treason and who according to law is ineligible to hold office, A woman who was responsible for Benghazi, a woman who has never accomplished anything positive for this country, a woman would rather feather her own nest that protect the people of this country. Who do you want to appoint the next three Supreme Court Justices? It is time for us to have a President with some huspfh. Some great leaders like Winston Church Hill were a little rough around the edges. Church Hill was once approached by a woman who said sir you are drunk, He in returned replied ma'am you are certainly ugly, but the difference is tomorrow I will be sober but you will still be ugly. This should be every Knight, every Catholic and every Christian of every denomination goal to stop the destruction of our country and put God back in our country motto. James G. Ricker, CEC seeks to form authentic leaders who will be capable of transforming homes and society. Modeled on some of the country s leading men s programs, That Man Is You! combines Scripture, solid secular research and a little fun to address the pressures and temptations facing men in our modern culture. It On July 24 th the Sheldon Kelly council hosted a hospitality Sunday breakfast in the meeting hall at the church. The breakfast was great but the help was better. Here are some pictures to prove it. 3

B) the Annunciation when the archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary. C) seeing God face to face. D) seeing life after death. 4. The thirteenth ecumenical council was held in Lyons, France in 1245 (Lyons I). Issues settled at this council were: A) The timeline for future ecumenical councils B) The excommunication of Emperor Frederick II and charter of a crusade led by King (Saint) Louis of France C) The establishment of the Holy Roman Empire D) The move of the Papacy to Avignon, France 5. What is the virtue that disposes us to choose the true good? A) temperance B) prudence Early life and education Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga was born in Viña del Mar, Chile, on 22 January 1901; after the death of his father when Alberto was four years old, his mother had to sell, at a loss, their modest property in order to pay the family s debts. As a further consequence, Alberto and his brother had to go to live with relatives and were often moved from one family to another. [1] From an early age, he experienced what it meant to be poor, and without a home.w Thanks to a scholarship, he managed to study at the prestigious all-boys Jesuit school of St. Ignacio, Santiago ( ). During this time, he volunteered at the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Andacollo, a Catholic parish and school in a poor neighborhood of Santiago. [2] Fernando Vives who was schoolteacher at the St. Ignacio school was one the greatest influences on Hurtado. During Vives 5

6 exile in Spain ( ) they held correspondence. [3] At the parish and school, he assisted in the office and was librarian. From 1918 to 1923, he attended the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, studying in its law school and writing his thesis on labour law. Obligatory military service interrupted his studies, but once he fulfilled this duty he went on to earn his degree early in August Rather than starting a career in law, Hurtado entered the Jesuit novitiate in In 1925 he went to Córdoba, Argentina, where he studied humanities. In 1927 he was sent to Barcelona, Spain to study philosophy and theology, but because of the suppression of the Jesuits in Spain in 1931, he went on to Belgium and continued his studies in theology at Louvain. He was ordained a priest there on 24 August 1933, and in 1935 obtained a doctorate in pedagogy and psychology. [1] Educator Right from the early days of his studies in labour law, and before becoming a Jesuit, Hurtado had his mind and heart set on tackling social issues and problems. Before returning to Chile, he visited social and educational centers in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. He returned to Chile in January 1936, and began his activity as professor of religion at Colegio San Ignacio and of Pedagogy at the Catholic University of Santiago. He was entrusted with the Sodality of Our Lady for the students, and he involved them in teaching catechism to the poor. [1] There was much social inequality in Chile during this time, and conservative Catholics in the nation had difficulty accepting the Vatican's social teachings. As late as 1931, the official party organ (aligned with the church hierarchy) refused to publish Quadragesimo anno, and when a group of clergy petitioned Archbishop José Horacio Campillo Infante to remove the editors, he refused and stated it was "necessary to protect Catholics from the imprudent acts of the pope". [4] In 1936, he authored an article entitled The Priesthood Crisis In Chile, which addressed the problem of the shortage of priests in Chile; his analysis was criticized as 'exaggerated'. [4] He criticized the level of catechism instruction offered in Chile, and wrote that young men often signed up as catechists but lacked the necessary certificate. Padre Hurtado Social apostolate In 1940, he was appointed diocesan director of the Catholic Action youth movement and the very next year, its national director ( ). That same year, in 1941, Hurtado's sociology-oriented mind led to his authoring of the book Is Chile a Catholic Country? The book published statistics revealing a lack of priests assigned to the working class and rural populations, including detailing parishes that had 10,000 laypeople assigned for one priest covering huge geographic areas. His solution was to increase and better educate the clergy, however, this never came to be. Almost half of Chile's clergy were foreigners (including missionaries from the United States and Canada) who did circuits of towns administering the sacraments (i.e., going to one town one week, then another the next week, etc.) Most Chileans regarded devotion to the Virgin and the saints as more important than attending 6

7 Mass or consuming the Eucharist, which they could not do regularly. [4] In the book he published the results of a 1939 survey of Chilean religious practices and found that only 9% of Chilean women and 3.5% of Chilean men regularly attended Mass (leaving over 90% as not regularly practicing). [4] Laying open a number of unpleasant realities, the book was heavily criticised by more conservative Catholics, who even accused Hurtado of being a Communist. [5] Keeping in mind his own origins, and ever grateful for the help he (and his family) had received when they were in great difficulties, Hurtado was led to active social involvement. His strong faith was transformed into action with his founding of an organization similar to Boys Town in the United States. His shelters, called Hogar de Cristo (Home of Christ), took in all children in need of food and shelter, abandoned or not. He also purchased a 1946 green pickup truck and monitored the streets at night to help those in need that he could reach. His own charisma brought him many collaborators and benefactors; the movement was a huge success. The shelters multiplied all over the country. It is estimated that between 1945 and 1951 more than 850,000 children received some help from the movement. [5] Labor movement and social doctrine of the Church In 1947, Hurtado entered the labor movement. Inspired by the social teaching of the Church he founded the Chilean Trade Union Association, meant to train leaders and instill Christian values in the labor unions of his country. [6] For them he wrote the three books Social Humanism (1947), The Christian Social Order (1947) and Trade Unions (1950). He served as a confessor to the Falange Nacional (the precursor to the modern Christian Democratic Party). To disseminate the social teaching of the Church and help Christians reflect and act on the serious social problems faced by the country he founded in 1951 the periodical called Mensaje ("Message"). He himself published numerous articles and books on labor issues in relation to the Roman Catholic faith. [5] Death Deeply spiritual, Hurtado was untiring in his work for the workers and the youth, combining intellectual reflection and practical actions. Ever optimistic and joyful he had also an attractive personality that brought many people to Christ and the Church, young and old, intellectuals and manual workers. [5] One day in 1952, Father Hurtado was stricken with intense pain and rushed to hospital. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Day after day the media kept the country informed of Hurtado's state of health. Before his death he had become a national hero. True to the faith he had been professing all through his life, he accepted gracefully what was ineluctable. After a brief battle with the illness, he died in Santiago. [7] Fr. Hurtado's memorable green pickup truck Veneration Father Hurtado was beatified on October 16, 1994, by Pope John Paul II and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 23, [7] St. Alberto was one of the first people to be elevated to sainthood during the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI; he was also the second Chilean saint, after Saint Teresa of Los Andes. Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga is one of the most popular and cherished saints in his country, Chile. An indication of his lasting popularity was the presence in Saint Peter's Square, on the day of 7

8 Hurtado's canonization, of a very large contingent of Chilean people, led by the highest authorities of the country, starting with President Ricardo Lagos and some high-ranking Chilean politicians who actually had been Father Hurtado's students during his school teacher time, like then-senator Gabriel Valdés. Tony s Trivia answers: 1. Answer: B 2. Answer: C Source: Catechism of the Catholic Church #2088 All other choices are examples of involuntary doubt. 3. Answer: The Beatific Vision is seeing God face to face. This supernatural Vision gives all the Blessed who enter heaven, unimaginable and indescribable happiness and eternal joy. 4. Answer: C The First General Council of Lyons was presided over by Innocent IV; the Patriarchs of Constantinople, Antioch, and Aquileia (Venice), 140 bishops, Baldwin II, Emperor of the East, and St. Louis, King of France, assisted. It excommunicated and deposed Emperor Frederick II and directed a new crusade, under the command of St. Louis, against the Saracens and Mongols. (Catholic Encyclopedia - Ecumenical Councils) 5. Answer: B Source: Catechism of the Catholic Church #1806 Prudence is the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it; the prudent man looks where he is going. THEME: Merciful like the Father is the motto of this Holy Year. This is a shortened version of the verse in Scripture, Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful (Luke 6:36). The Pope wrote, In mercy, we find proof of how God loves us. He gives his entire self, always, freely, asking nothing in return. He comes to our aid whenever we call upon him. What a beautiful thing that the Church begins her daily prayer with the words, O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me (Ps70:2)! The assistance we ask for is already the first step of God s mercy toward us. He comes to assist us in our weakness. And his help consists in helping us accept his presence and closeness to us. Day after day, touched by his compassion, we also can become compassionate towards others Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of Columbus A++, Superior for 40 consecutive years. It s a testament to our track record for excellence and security. I would suggest that a principal reason that we were able to achieve those accolades is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father Michael J.
