Into the hands of God Letter from Acomb Vicarage Did you know that it is estimated that half of the world s spider species are yet to be discovered? Or that in Tokyo, over the last 5 years - 24 residents bashed heads whilst bowing to each other? No? Me neither! These are 2 of the thousands of facts you can find in the New York Times Bestseller The Book of Useless Information! Sadly, the Bible, which used to be the supreme point of reference for most people in public life in our nation, is perceived by many in the UK today to be as useless as The Book of Useless Information. Available in full or part, in thousands of languages and dialects, written over thousands of years by over 40 authors, the Bible is a book which 500 years ago, men and women gave their lives to translate and distribute in this nation, and upon which the social and moral foundations of western civilisation were built. Yet today it is seen by most as irrelevant. Now I m sure we could all survive without knowing about the number of bumped Japanese heads and few of us will have been lying awake at night wondering about yet undiscovered spiders - But the fact is that many of us are anxious and afraid about many aspects of our lives unnecessarily, because we do not know, or have forgotten, the promises of God. The Bible, the Word of God, is our definitive source, and shows us God s character. His Word enables us to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ and to know this love that surpasses knowledge... (Eph ) MAGAZINE - DEADLINE 16TH OF EACH MONTH acombeditor@googl .com In the front of a Gideons Bible is a section entitled Where to find help when. Here there are 58 sections ranging from: when afraid, angry, anxious, to coping with failure, feeling far from God, feeling hurt, ill, jealous, lonely, tempted, weary etc. emotions all of us experience at some point. For each of these there is a Bible reference reassuring, comforting, guiding.
4 In September, we welcomed Revd Uell Kennedy from The Bible Society to Acomb and we celebrated our own special Bible Sunday. The Bible Society (like Gideons) is an organisation built on the belief that God s Word is for all, and that it changes lives. In Acomb, 150 Bibles (ESV English Standard Version) have been purchased with generous donations from the congregation, with some of them being dedicated in memory of loved ones. The Bibles will enable us to look together at God s Word during our worship and during sermons and talks. Bibles, however, are not just for Sundays. It is my hope and prayer that we can all benefit and grow through looking into the promises and challenges of the Bible in our own homes through the week, as well as in home groups (I d love everyone to be connected to one of these) and on Sundays. If you do not have a Bible but would like one then let me know. Reading the Bible helps us to discover our next step as we seek to honour and serve Christ, Your word is a lamp for my feet, and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105). In this era of fake news and fake truths it is good to know we can rely on the truth and reality of God s Word and thank God that we have this so readily available here today. 5 Steve Legg, was travelling in his car with his four year old daughter, Megan. After a period of thought she said When we are friends of Jesus, that means he comes to live in our heart. Don t you think he would have more to eat if he lived in our stomach? After a further period of thought she said If Jesus is our friend, that means he goes everywhere with us. So he is in the car with us now. Do you think he has remembered his seat belt? I wouldn t want him to get hurt. There were further questions about death and going to heaven and wondering how you would find your way there. Exasperated, Dad said I just do not know, but I know God has got it all under control. Megan said But Daddy, you know everything. The Need To Know It is easy to think that we must understand everything but we cannot fully understand the Creator of the Universe Lord of heaven and earth. God is greater than all we can ever imagine. We should never try to shrink him to fit into our understanding. Instead, let s worship God in all his wonder, glory and mystery. One day we will get our own private audience, and like Megan, we can ask our heavenly Father all the things we ever wanted to know. There will be all the time in the world to listen to the answers. Based on an article by Steve Legg, Evangelist and Author. Published in Mothers Union Families First magazine Sept/Oct edition single God. Remembering Iris Calvert We have asked members of the parish for their thoughts and memories of Iris who sadly died last July. Here are a few: I have known Iris since she came to live in York 40 years ago. I always found her a bright cheerful lady. She preferred going out to sitting alone in the house, but Margaret was very surprised to hear how many things she was involved with:- some I did not know about and some I may have forgotten. Margaret Donald Iris favourite flower was the snowdrop Iris was a fine Mothers' Union member and I remember attending many Mothers' Union Meetings, both locally and further afield - even to Ireland, with her. However, the thing that stands out in my mind was her wish to help in any way at Branch Meetings. If we turned up early to set out the chairs and prepare any refreshments, we would arrive to find Iris sitting quietly in St Aidan's with the chairs and tables already arranged for our meetings. Anna Lewis Three words describe Iris - willing, able and gentle. She was always prepared to help at church or in the community. In her prime she was very capable and she was kind and unassuming. Anne Arthur (continued overleaf)
6 And from the Parker family: Catherine and Heather s memories are of seeing her most mornings on the way to school and chatting before Iris continued on to one of her many commitments to church, community and family. Rachel has memories of, and gives thanks to Iris for working alongside her when Iris was verger for St. Stephen's for many years and Rachel was verger at St. Aidan's, covering each other for funeral, wedding and cleaning duties when on holiday. John says he first met Iris in 1982 when catering for a 'Church Mission to the Jews', event in York. They then renewed their friendship in 1988 when Rachel and John married and moved to Acomb, and began worshipping at Acomb Parish Church. John says: I always found her to be open and friendly, giving people the time of day, being a Christian witness to all she met. October Mothers Union The October meeting of the Mother's Union will be on the 10th October at 2.15pm. There will be a talk by Mo Vivash. All are welcome. PARISH AUTUMN FAIR Beech Tree on guard at St. Stephen s Steadfast, still the beech tree has stood for over two centuries ever growing on the church yard summit, Only moving at the whim of the wind. A northward lookout up the Vale of York so far that Hambledon s White Horse on the hills can be seen. A solid trunk of twenty five feet girth Severed, treasured and firmly rooted. Anchored on the skyline against winter weather, impervious to storm and gale. As if always there for us; a grandparent keeping an eye. Visited and touched in awe by children, squirrels and us. Wild birds, pigeons, owls, Crows and finches feed on the mast seeds every autumn. This tree is a constant re-assurance almost dwarfing the church alongside, and created by our God who loves all living creatures. Beechwood also makes good coffins,..so I m told. Ann Pugh Get ready for the Autumn Fair On Saturday 7th October In the Parish Hall We will need help plus baking plus books Plus bric-a-brac plus toys plus anything we can sell
7 Sharing the joy of our animals with others A member of our Parish, who wishes to remain anonymous, takes her animals out to a youth club for disabled young people and has recently visited Vyner House. She says Animals are both rewarding and demanding. I love looking after my pets and like to share them with others. We all know stroking animals can be therapeutic, so it was lovely to see this in action recently. What s On This Month This months Craft Evening will be on Tuesday 17th October from 7.30pm to 9pm in the Ellis Room. Come and enjoy tea, biscuits and conversation. If you do not have a craft, come along anyway. Contact is Emily on Parish Coffee Morning and Craft Fair Saturday 28th October 10.30am-12.30pm At the Parish Hall One Sunday afternoon we took five pets to meet the residents at Vyner House. We were happy to see our animals relax, as the residents stroked and cuddled them. One lady adored stroking our dog, as it brought back memories of wonderful times with her own Spaniel. Another gentleman stroked a baby guinea pig for about 15 minutes- both were contented. The rabbit took turns to sit on different knees. There was less confidence handling the chick, though people were surprised how soft her feathers are. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will be repeating the visit soon. Although animals can be a great joy for all, they take up a lot of time and it is important if considering buying one to buy from a reputable breeder or better still a rescue centre.. Acomb Local History Group On Wednesday, 11th October 2017 we will have a talk entitled A YEAR JUST OUTSIDE PROVENCE by Les Pierce We start our meeting at 10.00am (prompt) in ACOMB PARISH CHURCH HALL, FRONT STREET.
