3 THE BRIDGE Issue 4 3 JOHN WRITES.. Revd. John Hereward Rector of the Parish Dear Friends, I wonder what your experience of the season of Lent is? In popular culture people talk about giving up things like chocolate for Lent but is that all that there is to it? The introduction to our Ash Wednesday service has this to say: I invite you..to the observance of a holy lent by selfexamination and repentance; by prayer, fasting and self-denial and by reading and meditating on God s holy word. So, self-denial, giving something up, is there but so also are prayer, fasting, self-examination and reading and meditating on Scripture. Lent is a good time to slow down musicians think of lente and take stock of things. There are plenty of good spiritual books to read, the churches together Lent study groups and many online encouragements to do something different for Lent. Among other things this year I am taking up the challenge of a less plastic Lent. You can follow this campaign on Facebook where you will find useful hints for different actions to take each week. The problem of plastic pollution and in particular single-use plastic has been much in our press recently. It seems as if in particular the images show on the recent Blue Planet series have struck a chord. Although plastic has many wonderful, even life-saving uses, the sheer volume we are producing, and its near indestructability are causing huge problems globally. We need to reeducate ourselves and constantly be asking the question is this piece of plastic really necessary? Are there non-plastic alternatives? Can I recycle or re-use this plastic object? Can I encourage you to join me in observing a less plastic Lent? John Hereward

Connor, from Wadebridge is a student at University and when he came back for the holidays, he decided to raise some money for us. Huge thanks to Connor's friends and family who donated a fantastic 165. Such a thoughtful and refreshing idea from a student who wanted to help his community. ASDA Thanks to everyone who donated at our Collection in the ASDA Store, Bodmin. All donations help to provide for people in need in our community. Prepare for Universal Credit with our FREE Moneybox Course If you think Universal Credit will affect you or someone you know, we can offer help and support. We are currently working with Cornwall Housing and Eccabi as part of the European Social Fund running the FREE Moneybox Courses. This is for anyone who is a tenant, unemployed aged and it will help people to budget, build their confidence and manage their finances and find out how Universal Credit will affect them. If you would like more details of the One of our very talented Moneybox Course Members has designed our latest Newsletter, we think she has done a fantastic job! You can find our Newsletter on our website It s not just about food. Our Foodbanks are currently in need of household cleaning products (no bleach please), men s and ladies deodorant and razors. All donations make a big impact!! There are a number of reasons why someone might be referred to our Foodbanks and they are not always what people think! It could be anything from a mum who has lost her job and is struggling to find work that fits around her children, or a sudden health condition which results in a long stay in hospital and incurs an increased spend in fuel and parking costs, or a builder who has been laid off and is waiting for his first benefit payment to come through while he looks for a new job. Foodbank volunteers talk with people in similar situations every day. When people are referred to us for a food parcel, they ve most likely tried everything they can to get back on their feet, but it just hasn t worked. That s why we re here to give them a cup of tea, a listening ear and some food. We work hard to give people hope and extra support so that they recover from their crisis.
