Amen 2

3 First Reading - Isaiah 55:1-9.Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. 4 See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. 5 See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. 6 Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; 7 let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 3

4 Gospel reading - Luke 13:1-19 t At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did. Then he told this parable: A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil? He replied, Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down. Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, Woman, you are set free from your ailment. When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the Sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the Sabbath day. But the Lord answered him and said, You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the Sabbath day? When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing. He said therefore, What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches. 4

Date for your Diary - 30th Anniversary Celebration Rev'd Gary Birchall will be celebrating the 30th Anniversary of his ordination as a priest on Sunday 7th July 2019 at St Michael's Church. There will be one service for the whole church at 10.30am followed by a picnic in the church grounds. The whole church are warmly invited to be at the service to mark this occasion with him. Rev'd Gary Birchall was ordained priest in the Church of England at Ripon Cathedral in July He has served in parishes in Leeds, Leicester, Burnopfield (Co. Durham) and Boldmere. Please put this date in your diary now so that as many people as possible can be there. 6

7 St Michael's Parochial Church Council has been considering some development work for the inside of the Church building over the last eighteen months. The PCC have decided that the three top priorities are developing the area of the church where the choir stalls are currently located, improving accessibility at the main entrance into Church at the West Door and Porch, and to decorate the church for the first time since the re-dedication of the Church in These priorities were decided alongside a consideration of the current focus for the life and mission of St Michael's Church and have been given a lot of thought and consideration. There will be an open congregational meeting when proposed plans can be presented - we are awaiting for designs from the architect at the moment. The congregation will be informed of significant stages in the development. Funding for these developments will be made from our reserves. We currently have approximately 325,000 pounds in reserves and this work should still leave about 200,000 in reserves for future contingencies. It is important that as a responsible charity we use our available funds for the purposes and aims of the charity. So watch this space for further news and if you have any questions please have a word with Rev'd Gary Birchall or the Churchwardens Peter Swaine and Judith Leonard. Ps. One word of reassurance: there are no current plans to remove the pews in the main body of the church. It's the kind of thing that people get anxious about. Parish Sunday Lunch Sunday 24th March 2019 The lunch is open to everyone and all are welcome but would you please sign the sheet at the back of church to help with the catering. (there is a small charge to cover costs) 7
