3 People serving in church this month Date Welcomers Reader Prayers Assisting at * 5 June FCPG FCPG FCPG Julie Hart 12 June Uniformed Uniformed Uniformed Groups Groups Groups David Martin No Ordinary Time Thought for the Month The Church of England has a funny way of looking at things sometimes. It encourages us to be reflective in Lent, wonder at God s love on Good Friday, rejoice in resurrection life on Easter, be perplexed at the Ascension and full of the Spirit at Pentecost. Then it tries to bamboozle us on Trinity before dropping us unceremoniously into something it calls ordinary time where it expects us to click our liturgical heels while we wait for the next exciting liturgical season to arrive - far off Advent. 19 June Ele McGhee David Martin Viv Sumner Julie Hart Elim Church Viv Sumner I am glad that we use the church s year to celebrate important things in Jesus life and the life of the church, but, just because we are not in a liturgical season, it doesn t mean that we should be sitting back and watching the grass grow. 26 June 3 July Sue Wood Dreena Simpson Ann Hooker Sally Hrycyk (10am) Arthur Bostock (6.30pm) Val Norgain Baptism FCPG FCPG David Jones In the ordinary time following the first Pentecost, extraordinary thing followed extra-ordinary thing in the life of the church as it began its explosive growth. The lives of ordinary Christians were transformed in extraordinary ways as God moved in their hearts and, in turn and with God s help, they transformed the lives of others. And, incidentally, in the process they gave the Greek word for witness, Martyr, a whole new meaning. * With one other person, depending on clergy presence Do we expect our spiritual lives to be routine and ordinary, or do we expect to see change and growth? So let s dump ordinary time and make the period between Trinity 14 3
4 and Advent something quite extra-ordinary in the life of our church. We started to experiment with prayer in the week before Pentecost, what does God want us to do next? Perhaps the next thing is to follow the extra-ordinary examples of those first Christians and experiment with being witnesses for their Lord and ours in the weeks following. Wishing you God s extraordinary Grace and Peace. Peter Uniformed Groups normally meet during term-time: Wednesday - 6pm Beavers pm Cubs pm Scouts Thursday pm Rainbows & Brownies Friday - 7pm Guides Hospital Songs of Praise It is our turn to take the short Songs of Praise service at Ilkeston Community Hospital on 5th June. Pam Bailey - Events Coordinator 12 Barbara Clayton CHURCH FAMILY NEWS Baptisms - Freddie Latham was baptized at the end of April when he came with parents Sarah and Sean and family. Then on 22nd May Joel Hart (grandson to Steve and Julie Hart) attended with parents Leanne and David and family and friends for Joel s baptism. We welcome both Freddie and Joel. Congratulations to Jean Beardow on celebrating a special birthday in May - following the 10am service on May 15th a lovely cake helped the celebrations! 5 GirlGuiding UK Celebrating 100 years of the Senior Section At the May parade service our Senior Section (for girls between years) presented a fascinating short history of the changes which have occurred over the years - with props! The most recent change was the Look Wider programme, launched in 1994, inspired by Lord Baden-Powell s quote which ended the presentation: Look wide! And when you are looking wider, look wider still. Serving their delicious home made cakes after the service.
6 Parochial Church Council (PCC) The PCC did not meet in April, rather on 26th April there was the Annual Meeting of Parishioners, at which Church Wardens were elected for the year, and the Annual Parochial Church Meeting, to receive annual reports and hold elections to Deanery Synod and the PCC. Our Church Wardens Glenice Boulton and Julie Hart were re-elected for a further year with many thanks for their long service in this role. Sally Hrycyk and Lu Vitale were re-elected to the PCC. Annual reports from a number of groups and organisations were gratefully received. The draft Church and Church Hall annual accounts were presented and these will be finalised and sent to the Independent Examiner. Forthcoming PCC meetings are planned for 14th June, 19 July, 13 September, 11 October and 15 November. We travelled through the grounds of Chatsworth House estate, down through Baslow and into Rowsley, stopping at the Peak Village. We had a browse round the shops and (amongst other things) several hobby horses and large windmills were purchased! Most of us enjoyed lunch at the restaurant there, though some snuk off to the pub! Several sat in the sunshine eating ice-cream before we all got back on the coach to enjoy a sing-along and the scenic ride home passing through Matlock and Matlock Bath. Thanks to everyone who made it a lovely day and here s to our next outing! Julie Hart
8 Prayer at Christ Church The week of prayer prior to Pentecost has been a special time to pray. For ourselves, for our families, for our church here and throughout the world, and for our nation, seeking God s plan and purpose. The focus on the Lord s Prayer proved to bring us into a deeper understanding of what Jesus was teaching His disciples. Remember, they had asked Him to teach them to pray. Our request today is the same, together with: Lord help us to be more effective in our prayer. We need to see the Kingdom of God being established here on earth just like those early disciples saw. So, as we move on in this season perhaps we can continue to take the Lord s Prayer, line by line, think on it and ask God to help us deepen our relationship with Him and His Word. We can ask also that the Holy Spirit will touch our hearts afresh and that the fruits of the Spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control be clearly seen in us. We will continue to meet together and share Jesus teaching, currently looking at His healing ministry. We also lift to God those who have requested prayer from the church. If you would like to come along you would be very welcome. Please ask Julie, Glenice or Iris regarding times and dates. Together, let us boldly proclaim; Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father s glory. God our deliverer, Prayer for peace and justice defender of the poor and needy; when the foundations of the earth are shaking, give strength to your people to uphold justice and fight all wrong, in the name of your son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Christian Aid is the Christian organisation that insists the world can and must be swiftly changed to one where everyone can live a full life, free from poverty. They provide urgent, practical and effective assistance where need is great, tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root causes. Thank you to all those who contributed to last month s Christian Aid week.
