2 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 3 Dear Friends, I was having lunch with some priest friends a few years ago when the names of other priests surfaced. These are men who have become leaders, many holding important positions of responsibility in the Church. As each name came up, it was fascinating to see and hear the reaction. Good and talented as the priests we spoke of are, each fell victim to criticism, put-down and sarcasm. The world might think them gifted, but we knew better! I started wondering why we do things like that. Why, when we've known people for many years, we're inclined to minimize their abilities and achievements. We went to college with these men and they've been our peers for almost 30 years. We knew them first as teenagers and now as middle-aged men. So why the quick inclination to criticize? The world may see their glasses as more than half full, but not us. Why do we do that? The answer, I suspect, is our history together. We've known each other so long that we tend to lock our perceptions into that earlier time frame and are unable or unwilling to re-form perceptions created long ago. After all, when you've known someone as a teen, it's not easy to take them seriously as an adult. Young people can do some pretty immature things. It's not surprising that we hold on to those images. But, people do change, develop and mature. We all have the ability to become better people, to advance in wisdom. Jesus of Nazareth was aware of our inclination to minimize the people we think we know and therefore pigeonhole. He says in the Gospel: "Prophets are not without honor, except in their own country and in their own house." (Matthew 13:57) Too often Jesus faced the "we've known him for years, how great can he really be?" mentality. So discouraged was he by old friends and neighbors who doubted him that he decided to leave town. So this very human inclination to diminish others is certainly nothing new. And it extends not only to old friends and acquaintances, it happens in family as well. I know a man who recently said as much about his own wife of 20 years. She was a nice and pretty partner when they first married. She's become much more than that since then. funding for research and runs a support group for other survivors. She's often on the phone, encouraging those who have learned that they have this not uncommon cancer. She does all this while raising three great kids, holding a job outside the home, and being an active force in her Church community. This amazes her husband. He told me recently: "I cannot believe this dynamo is the same woman I married. Frankly, I'm shocked by Beth's talents and dedication. I never knew what she was capable of." He said this with equal parts of surprise and pride. But his surprise is what amazes me. How could he not have seen her potential and possibility? The answer: he had already taken her measure. Even with love, he had decided who Beth was and what she was capable of accomplishing. And he missed her by a mile. What my friends and I did, what Tom did with Beth is all too common. It's a perfectly human response to people we've known for so long. We minimize and categorize: We miss wonderful possibilities. The human spirit is limitless. And it doesn't ever have to stop growing. So look again at that friend you think you know. Gaze once more at the wife or husband, child or friend that you thought you knew so completely. Be open to a new reality. People become so much more than we imagined. Let's have the eyes and ears to see, to listen - and to celebrate the possibilities. They truly are limitless. In His Love, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor Diagnosed with breast cancer about 10 years ago, she not only fought her way back to good health, but became a crusader against cancer. She organizes annual walks to raise

4 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 5 Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Garden Phase II Spring 2014 As spring 2014 approaches, we have begun Phase II of the Memorial Garden Grotto Restoration. There is another opportunity to purchase memorial bricks, for anyone who hasn t had a chance to do so. (Please refer to the attached Reservation Form ) As a reminder, memorial text can contain a message of remembrance for our deceased loved ones, but can also pave our Living Walkway, marking moments such as; Births, Baptisms, Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations, Holy Orders, Anniversaries etc. In addition to the bricks, we are also replacing the top of the altar in the Memorial Garden with a stunning new, black granite piece deserving of its sacred purpose. The four sides of the altar top will be engraved in gold lettering to match the benches, one of which, (front) is already spoken for. There is an opportunity to purchase one of the remaining three sides of the grotto altar. Please call the rectory if you re interested in dedicating or memorializing these special sites. Please watch for the many upcoming changes, as we restore this beautiful garden dedicated to Our Blessed Mother and Bernadette. We will keep you informed in the bulletin of the different opportunities to care and share in memorializing and restoring items in the Grotto. If you have any questions, please contact the rectory Thank you for your continued support. God Bless!

6 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 7 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you" (Jeremiah 1:5) Spiritual Adoption Program The OLL Respect Life Committee begins the Spiritual Adoption Program this weekend. This program involves making a personal commitment to pray daily for one unborn child who is in danger of being aborted. We ask you to spiritually adopt one unknown baby for the next nine months. We will pray that this child be carried to term and experience the fullness of life as God intended. This program begins close to the Feast of the Annunciation, and will conclude with a baby shower for Birthright in December, close to the celebration of Christ s birth. We ask you to picture a young woman who just this month discovered that she is pregnant. She may not know where to turn. She may be considering aborting this baby. She may be under pressure from her spouse, boyfriend, family or friends to abort her child. She may think there is no other option. But many people, like us, do care enough to help her and her baby. All our prayers can make a difference between whether this baby will be born or aborted. Our prayers are a form of spiritual support for the mother and child. There is a table set up in the vestibule. Please take a prayer card as you leave Mass. Pray the ten-second prayer daily for your adopted child for the next nine months. We encourage you to name your baby and give him/her an identity. At the end of the nine-month period, we will celebrate the birth of our spiritually adopted children with a baby shower to benefit Birthright. In this way we can also help in a tangible way the mother as she brings to term her child a beautiful gift of life. Today marks the first day of our Spiritual Adoption Program. We will give monthly updates on the fetal growth and development of our adopted children. Conception At the moment the nuclei of the father s sperm and mother s egg unite a new and unrepeatable human being comes into the world, complete with his or her own unique set of DNA. The new little person s sex is also determined from the beginning. This tiny human begins her life as a single cell gliding down the fallopian tube. In just a few days she will snuggle into the soft lining of her mother s womb where she will be nurtured for about nine months. After birth she will play a unique role within her own family and community a role only she can fulfill. All she needs is time, nourishment and, most of all, love.

10 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 11 THEOLOGY CLASS 7:30-9:00pm in the Church basement Abstracts of each class are given out, so you can best follow the lectures Phone the rectory for more information. Next Class - Tuesday, April 8th The Paschal candle represents Christ, the Light of the World. The pure beeswax of which the candle is made represents the sinless Christ who was formed in the womb of His Mother. The wick signifies His humanity, the flame, His Divine Nature, both soul and body. Five grains of incense inserted into the candle in the form of a cross recall the aromatic spices with which His Sacred Body was prepared for the tomb, and of the five wounds in His hands, feet, and side. During the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night the priest or deacon carries the candle in procession into the dark church. A new fire, symbolizing our eternal life in Christ, is kindled which lights the candle. The candle, representing Christ himself, is blessed by the priest who then inscribes in it a cross, the first letters and last of the Greek alphabet, (Alpha and Omega `the beginning and the end') and the current year, as he chants the prayer below; then affixes the five grains of incense. Subjects: 1. Church History 2. Church Dogma 3. Apologetics 4. Scripture Everyone Welcome! 15 Page 16 Sunday March 23, 2014 Mass Book Opens for July 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014 on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 9am in the rectory. Announced Mass refers to a Mass for which there is a specific date and time. It is announced in the Bulletin and during the Prayer of the Faithful. Extra-Ordinary Ministers are needed to visit the homebound. The faithful who are ill or homebound are deprived of their rightful and accustomed place in the Eucharistic community. In bringing Holy Communion to them the Minister of Communion represents Christ and manifests faith and charity on behalf of the whole community toward those who cannot be present at the Eucharist. For the sick and the homebound, the reception of Communion is not only a privilege but also a sign of support and concern shown by the Christian community for its members who are ill. You are a representative of our parish community and must be a DRVC trained minister of Holy Communion and have taken both A & B classes. Please consider helping out with this important endeavor. Thank you. Contact: Vincent Gatto at the rectory The weekday Masses are 6:45am, 8:30am and 8pm Saturday is 6:45 and 8:30 am Saturday evening Vigil Masses are 5:00pm and 5:15 (in chapel) Sunday Masses are at 7:30am, 9am, 10:30am, 12noon and 1:30pm Announced Masses are $ There is an extra $5.00 for those desiring the leatherette folder. There will be a limit of 3 Masses, per person given out on the first day. Sunday Masses and Saturday Vigil will be limited to 2 per family, so that all parishioners will have an opportunity to get a Sunday Mass. The Third Week of Lent With this week, we conclude the first part of Lent. We continue our lessons in the faith, as our practices of Lent become deeper and more full of grace. We enter into this week reflecting upon the Scrutiny that makes up our intense prayer for those Elect, preparing for Baptism. And, as we beg, as Church, that they be freed from sin and from all anxiety, we ask those same desires for ourselves. The simple and powerful words of the Opening Prayer guides our daily prayer. We continue to wake each morning, pausing to ask for the graces we desire for the day. Throughout each day, the background of our thoughts and feelings is more and more taken up with what this journey means for our personal change of heart, the renewal of our Baptismal commitment to be placed with Jesus, and our growing desire to act in solidarity with the poor. We go to bed each evening, after pausing to give thanks for the gifts of the day.
