4 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 5 Parish Outreach Food Pantry Thank you to all the good folks in our parish community for all you do to embrace those less fortunate. Especially during these Summer days when the children are home from school, your support and generosity are a welcomed blessing. With many of us taking our well earned time off to enjoy the summer season, please continue to keep in mind our neighbors in need. We love to have plenty to share with all those who come to our door. Items most in need are Peanut Butter, Jelly, Pasta, Tomato Sauce and Cereals. Thank you again for making our parish food pantry the wonderful success that it is! BACK TO SCHOOL It s hard to believe that it s that time of year when we begin to see the sale ads for Back to School necessities. While our food pantry is always our first priority at Parish Outreach, we have been very successful the past years in helping families ease the burden of costly school supplies. If your means allow, please consider a donation of any of the following items to help children less fortunate prepare for the beginning of a bright, new school year. Parish Outreach will be collecting school supplies throughout the month of August. Thank you for helping us to help others! The most valuable gifts we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one. Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. Thank you so much to our coordinator, Deacon Frank Gariboldi and all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at if you would like to volunteer. 7 Page 8 Sunday, August 3, 2014 Spiritual Adoption Program Four Months Your adopted unborn child is now 6 7 inches long. Muscles and bones are formed. The mother may now feel the baby moving. The baby s brain has begun maturing, a process that will continue until she is about 14 years old. Her eyelids are now sealed shut and will re-open at 7 months. Her taste buds are now working. Nutrients consumed by her mother are passed on to her within an hour or two. Three hundred quarts of fluid a day are sent to the baby via the umbilical cord. Fine hair begins to grow on the head, eyebrows and eyelashes. Facial expressions similar to the baby s parents can be seen at this time. This month REMs (rapid eye movements) have been recorded a sign of dreaming. Please remember to pray daily for your Spiritually Adopted Baby and the baby s mother and father. During your earthly life this spiritually adopted child of yours will be known only to God but in the world to come it is hoped that you will meet the child whose life was spared by your prayers and spend eternal happiness with them. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion. (Prayer of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen) ****************** In a newly released video, ex-planned Parenthood director Abby Johnson states that her supervisor told her that their facility needed to double the number of abortions they were doing in order to meet the financial goals that had been set up by the regional organization. For every abortion performed, they made $ Johnson says, "This was bothersome to me as I truly believed that our goal was to reduce the number of abortions...after all, that's what we always said to the media. When I voiced my concerns to my supervisor, she laughed and said, 'But Abby, abortion is how we make our money.'" Recently, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains gave its Aurora clinic an award for doing more abortions in the past fiscal year than the one prior. (Steven Ertelt, 7/22/14) ******************** "The attorney general of Colorado is investigating Planned Parenthood based on Live Action's latest undercover video, which shows a worker in Denver telling a teenage girl to watch pornography, visit sex shops, engage in [dangerous and disgusting] behavior, as well as to use her phone to search the internet so her parents won't see her search history...in many parts of the country, intentionally facilitating a young teen's access to pornography violates laws against corruption of a minor... The allegations come as Planned Parenthood faces a civil lawsuit claiming that it sent a 12-year-old rape victim back home with her adult abuser, who continued to rape her. In Arizona, parents are asking authorities to investigate all abortion providers after learning that Planned Parenthood did not report a known rape victim to authorities in order to avoid the 'hassle'. Local police say the teenager went on to rape again." (Ben Johnson, 7/28/14) ***************** "The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) this past week...this treaty could have a dangerous impact on abortion laws in this country. Pro-life Americans should be especially concerned with the inclusion of the term 'sexual and reproductive health' under the list of required areas for which signatory nations must provide 'free or affordable health care.' The term 'sexual and reproductive health' is not defined. This provides an opportunity for activists within UN agencies...to distort its meaning to serve their agenda. Although abortion is not mentioned in the treaty, activists within the UN want this phrase to be interpreted to mean a right to abortion. The United States, North Korea, China and Canada are the only 4 nations in the world to allow abortion through all nine months of pregnancy for any reason. However, there is a desire on the part of [pro-abortion Senators] to further radicalize America's abortion policies...if the US were to ratify CRPD, a US court could cite the recommendations of its treaty monitoring body as evidence of customary international law in order to further liberalize the abortion policies in this country...in the last decade, courts in Columbia and Argentina have allowed their nations to be pressured by the recommendations of UN treaty monitoring bodies to liberalize their laws in favor of abortion. The United States is already one of the world leaders regarding legal protections for people who have disabilities. Ceding this nation's sovereignty to an international body will not increase rights for disabled Americans, but it will create a dangerous opening for policy making by abortion activists within UN bodies. Now that CRPD has passed out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee it will be eligible for a vote on the Senate floor. The treaty will need the votes of 2/3 of the Senate in order to be ratified. Pro-life Americans should be on guard against CRPD and any UN treaty that does not expressly prohibit the agreement from being interpreted to mean a right to abortion." (William Saunders and Mary Drury, 7/2

9 Page 10 Sunday, August 3, 2014 Auditions for the Diocesan Choir The Diocesan Choir of Rockville Centre, which sings for the principal Diocesan liturgies, is currently holding auditions on all voice parts (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). Singers with previous choral experience and basic music reading skills are encouraged to fill out an application form by visiting the choir website at This group of 100 singers leads the music for all the principal diocesan liturgies at the Cathedral, frequently appearing on Telecare as they sing for the Ordinations of Deacons, Priests, and Bishops, as well as Advent Lessons and Carols, the St. Agnes Awards, and other celebrations. The choir also performs concerts of sacred music, often with orchestra, including the Gounod St. Cecilia Mass, the Haydn Te Deum, and wroks by other classical and contemporary composers. The repertoire of the choir includes a wide variety of music from chant to contemporary compositions.. The choir rehearses on Monday evenings (every other week) at St. Kilian Church in Farmingdale. Since many in the choir also belong to their parish choirs, the Diocesan Choir schedule is careful to avoid conflicts on Sunday mornings, and avoids important liturgical weeks like Christmas and Holy Week. In addition to Diocesan Liturgies, the choir has brought their joyful music to additional locations in Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, as well as St. Patrick s Cathedral in New York City. In 2010 the choir made their first European tour to Salzburg, Munich and Vienna, and the group is planning a trip to England for 2016, during their 25 th anniversary season. Last season the choir sang for the Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basicila of the National Shrine win Washington, DC, and this season will prepare for a performance of Missa Gaia, which is based on the writings of St. Francis of Assisi. 10 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 11...Another Man s Treasure We all have them those gifts from past Christmases, birthdays, and anniversaries that weren t quite right. Instead of letting them collect dust or take up room in your house, why not donate these items for a good cause? The Country Western Dance Committee is looking for a few nice gift items to include in their gift basket raffles. We will take your unused items, give them a new home, and rid you of the guilt that comes with throwing out an unwanted gift! So please come by if you decide that you don t need any more bath & body lotions, lavender scented candles, or fuzzy polka dotted socks ( it s the thought that counts, right?). We ll be waiting to gratefully accept your donations! All donated items can be dropped off at the church rectory during office hours.
