Bethany College Job Fair & Check-in TUMC has traditionally provided water and breakfast bars for the college students checking-in, usually there is a few weeks to plan, but this year we were not notified in advance! Breakfast bars and popcorn (microwave packages) need to be at the church by this coming Wednesday, August 15th! On Thursday, August 16th come and help put together packages for the Job Fair. On Saturday, August 18th from 8 to noon, come and help hand out water and breakfast bars to students checking in! Contact the office for more information or to volunteer. 5 of Mark your calendars! Plan on helping during the Labor Day Weekend in our Labor of Love! Details will follow. We will be assisting around the church and in our community on Friday, Saturday, Sunday afternoon, and Monday! Choose a day or two or help all weekend! Children's Choir Rehearsal Begins on September 9th Registration for Children's Music is on Sunday, September 9th, in the 1st and 2nd grade room at 6:00pm. Please have at least one parent present. All kids ages 3 through 6th grade are welcome to take part! Children will sing active songs from VBS and Camp Horizon and also learn seasonal songs to perform in worship. Middle school kids (5th-8th grade) are also welcome to accompany the children's choir with musical instruments, especially guitar and drums, as they are able. TUMC's congregation has been greatly blessed in the past by children and their musical performances! It is such a joy to hear children's voices singing praises to the Lord! We are looking forward to seeing you all soon! Love in Christ, Nancy Salminen IMAGINE NO MALARIA WORKSHOP The Salina District invites all clergy and laity to attend this important workshop on September 30th from 3:00-4:30 pm in Beloit at the Beloit UMC! Care Group Kick-off Event! 13 Care Groups have been formed, and to celebrate this wonderful goal being achieved, on Sunday September 9th from 5-6pm there will be a POTLUCK! Bring something to share and meet your Care Group! Professional child care available in nursury in the basement (also child appropriate movies). Concessions available (freewill offering). LET S GET BACK TO IT! CHOIR AND BELLS!! The adult choir, Bells 101, and Hand Bell Choir will meet on Thursday, August 23rd at 7pm in Fellowship Hall for a Start of the Season get together (everyone bring a snack item to share). If you would like to join one of the choirs come on Thursday the 23rd for details and information! Mark your Calendars. Casting Crowns Concert Thursday, September 13, 2012 When I heard that Casting Crowns was performing at the state fair I thought, Wow! That would be a great outing for our church. We can carpool down, sit together and have a great time of fellowship while listening to one of the best Christian bands out there today. 6 Go for the Gold: Champions for Christ TUMC Sunday School for All Ages in August! The summer Olympics may be in London, but we can enjoy all the excitement and fun of Olympic sports right here in Lindsborg and learn about Jesus Christ's love during fellowship time. Here's a look at the "Champions for Christ" we'll be studying over the next few weeks: 8/12:--Ruth 1:1-2:22; God wants us to love our family and friends. The focus will be one having self-control to repel temptation, allowing us to make the best choices. 8/19--The Prodigal Son: Luke 15: Discussion will center on the importance of receiving God's gift of forgiveness and passing it on. We'll talk about how teamwork helps us treat others as champions and form good habits to become a champion for Christ. 8/26--Jesus and the Disciples; Matthew 8: We'll learn how God's comforting presence is with us through every situation. Jesus, our coach, tells us there is great glory in our faith and that faith makes us "Champions for Christ" when we carry the "torch of faith" with us every day. Hebrews 12:2 (The Message) Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed - that exhilarating finish in and with God - he could put up with anything along the way: cross, shame, whatever. And now he's there, in the place of honor, right Beginning on Sunday, September 9th at 10:00 am in the Eklund Room an adult offering for Sunday School, John Ortberg video series Life You ve Always Wanted. Join Pat Bellah and others for this exciting series. Coming in September...2 Opportunities/10 Commandments Mondays starting Sept. 10th at 10 am OR Sundays starting Sept. 16th at 6 pm Come and learn about the ten commandments and how they apply to life today! Sunday School Teacher Training is on Sunday, August 26th from 10-11am SS Teachers and Subs are encouraged to come for this fun training time and introduction to the new SS materials! Calling All Sunday School Teachers! God is Doing a New Thing! God is still saying today, Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43:18-19) Another great year of Sunday School is fast approaching and we need your help! Looking for teachers that have helped in the past and new teachers, too. Each class will be team taught, making it easy to schedule family vacations and to cover when illness occurs. Substitutes and training are provided. Sunday School will resume on September 9 and run through May with several Sundays off due to holidays and other special events. We appreciate your love and support of our Sunday School kids! Women and men age 16 and up are invited to volunteer. Duties include: Being a faithful child of God Able to commit to a journey with those who come to learn Seek to grow in your own understanding of God Offer compassion and caring Will listen, celebrate, laugh, and cry Will plan carefully and teach wisely Will pray Will sing and make joyful noises even when singing is not a gift Will sit on the rug and tell stories to children Will expect more of oneself that others expect Will provide space for others to glimpse God Able to give fully because God in Christ gives fully God is doing a new thing with the Sunday School program at TUMC! New paint, new equipment, and new materials! So many people are excited about learning about God! Being in the midst of revitalization and new birth is a truly wonderful place to be! SMART Actions for TUMC to achieve these goals: 1. Hire a Christian Education Director by May 1, 2012, without affecting paying current bills so that we can attract new as well as deepen existing persons as disciples of Jesus Christ. 2. Establish 12 care groups by September 1, 2012, so that we live out our lives as Christ s example to love one another as he loved us. 3. Revitalize classrooms in original building by refurbishing, organizing, replacing, updating, and adding technology for multi-purpose use by December 31, 2012, with priority given to the blue, green, yellow, and pre-k rooms so that learning is done in a safe, inspiring, and age-appropriate environment. MINISTRY STRATEGIES FOR A VITAL CONGREGATION Engaged in making disciples - Vital churches have more small groups for all ages. - Vital churches have more programs for children. - Vital churches have more programs for youth. Lay Leadership - Vital churches focus on increasing the effectiveness of lay leaders (understand their role and carrying these roles out effectively). - Vital churches have lay leaders who demonstrate a vital personal faith (regular worship, intentional spiritual growth, personal devotional life, and giving of financial resources). - Vital churches place an emphasis on rotating lay leadership in order to involve more people over time. - Vital churches call, equip, use and support more lay leaders than non-- vital churches. (20% or more of their worship attendees describe themselves as current or past leaders in their church). Pastor - Vital pastors give attention to developing, coaching, and mentoring lay leadership to enable laity to increase their ability to carry out ministry. - Vital pastors use their influence to increase the participation of others in order to accomplish changes in the church. - Vital pastors motivate the congregation to set and achieve significant goals through effective leadership. - Vital pastors inspire the congregation through preaching. - Vital pastors, when they are serving effectively, stay for a longer period of time. (Short--- term appointments of effective pastors decrease the vitality of a congregation). Worship - Vital churches offer a mix of contemporary (newer forms of worship style) and traditional services. - Vital churches have preachers who tend to use more topical sermon series in traditional services. - Vital churches use more contemporary music (less blended music that includes traditional tunes) in contemporary services. - Vital churches use more multi--- media in contemporary services Missions - Vital churches are engaged in giving and doing mission - Vital churches are engaged in mission locally and globally
