6 Gospel: Luke 23:35-43 Jesus is mocked by the crowd as he hung on the cross. Above him was an inscription that read This is the king of the Jews. One of the men being crucified with Jesus tells Him to save them and Himself, while the other asks that he be remembered when Jesus is in his kingdom. Jesus said in reply, Amen I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation! And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes but this man has done nothing criminal. Then he said, Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom. He replied to him, Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. Almost daily, the media offers us stories of crimes, criminals, trials and sentencing. Shame, humiliation, and despair wound families of both victims and the accused. How different it was on Calvary that afternoon, when the good thief acknowledged guilt, expressed remorse, and won his place in heaven. Bishop Sheen stated He committed another crime as he stole heaven. Pope Francis tells the story of a person to be executed who did not repent of his deeds, and if he had the chance, he would continue to do the same wrong. The confessor asked Are you sorry then that you are not sorry? May we allow the words of the repentant thief fall from our lips: Jesus remember me The year of mercy has repeated these stories over and over again. Magi Christmas Luncheon The air is getting colder the holidays are near, a time for celebration with friends we hold so dear! Once again, we will celebrate Jesus Birthday with Epiphany s MAGI. A luncheon is planned for Thursday, December 15 th in the All purpose Room. Look in those drawers, closets and attic for a gently used or new item to donate to our gift basket. Pick up a flyer on the table in the Commons Area. Cut off for sign-ups is 12/2. Thank you! 7 We bet you didn t know Fun facts about Thanksgiving! A tradition is born: TV dinners have Thanksgiving to thank. In 1953, someone at Swanson misjudged the number of frozen turkeys it would sell that Thanksgiving -- by 26 TONS! Some industrious soul came up with a brilliant plan: Why not slice up the meat and repackage with some trimmings on the side? Thus, the first TV dinner was born! Going shopping?: Not if you're a plumber. Black Friday is the busiest day of the year for them, according to Roto-Rooter, the nation's largest plumbing service. After all, someone has to clean up after household guests who "overwhelm the system." This land is my land: There are four places in the U.S. named Turkey. Louisiana's Turkey Creek is the most populous, with a whopping 440 residents. There's also Turkey, Texas; Turkey, North Carolina; and Turkey Creek, Arizona. Oh, let's not forget the two townships in Pennsylvania: the creatively named Upper Turkeyfoot and Lower Turkeyfoot! Leaving a legacy: When Abe Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday, it was thanks to the tireless efforts of a magazine editor named Sarah Josepha Hale. Her other claim to fame? She also wrote the nursery rhyme, "Mary had a Little Lamb." Gobble, gobble?: Not so fast. Only male turkeys, called toms, gobble. Females, called hens, cackle. Have it your way: If Ben Franklin did, the turkey would be our national bird. An eagle, he wrote in a letter to his daughter, had "bad moral character." A turkey, on the other hand, was a "much more respectable bird." Talking turkey: Why is it called a turkey? Oh boy, this will take some explainin'. Back in the day, the Europeans took a liking to the guinea fowls imported to the continent. Since the birds were imported by Turkish merchants, the English called them turkeys. Later, when the Spaniards came to America, they found a bird that tasted like those guinea fowls. When they were sent to Europe, the English called these birds "turkeys" as well. A Prayer For Thanksgiving O God of all creation, Giver of all good gifts, You bless our lives With your generous love, By giving us once more The fruit of the fields, Our family and friends Our faith, our work, And our lives together. We thank you for these gifts, And ask that you help us To imitate your goodness, To share our blessings With those who are in need. Amen. Thanksgiving Meal Are you home alone for Thanksgiving or would you like to enjoy your meal in a family atmosphere? Why not join us on Thanksgiving Day at 1 pm for dinner? If you like you can bring a covered dish (turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing or dessert). About 200 of my closest friends and I will be cooking for you. If interested please call the Parish office at to register. All are welcome!! - Sue Hermida Christmas Wish Tree The Wish Tree will be up November 25 th. Please Take a heart and purchase a NEW GIFT to make a child s wish come true. Please bring unwrapped gifts to the Parish Office no later than Friday, December 16 th. Fr. Mike was asked if we would be able to collect gifts for St. Anthony s Parish in Lakewood (like we did last year). The children are between the ages of 8 & 9 years old. The colored hearts are for St. Anthony s Parish and the white hearts are for our needy families. All gifts must have the Heart taped on the Gift. It s Christmas time, just think, when you buy a Christmas give for a child, that s one child you helped to have a Merry Christmas! Helping Hands Ministry Helping Hands Our Ministry would like to thank all the parishioners who are keeping our food bin full. We are able to give out more food each week because of you. We would also like to thank our parishioners who donate meat, cheese & butter on a monthly basis. If you are able to help with these dairy products, these is a sign up sheet on the table in the commons area. 7
