6 Parish Pastoral Council Meeting The Parish Pastoral Council will be meeting on March 14th in the All Purpose Room. The open session is held from 8:15PM to 9:15PM. All parishioners are welcome to attend. We encourage you to attend the open session and share your input. Gospel: Matthew 4:1-11 In preparation for His ministry, Jesus goes into the desert to fast and pray for 40 days. There He is tempted by the devil to give evidence of His miraculous powers, but Jesus resists the devil saying, Away with you Satan! You shall do homage to the Lord your God; Him alone shall you adore. Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterward was hungry For if by the offense of one man all died, much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ, abound for all. Will you do yourself a favor? Begin this holy time with special fervor and devotion, for your spiritual benefit, the good of the church and those around you. We have the tendency to commemorate events in traditional ways. The fourth of July, we became free, raise flags and shoot fireworks. At Thanksgiving, we express gratitude and have some sort of feast. The page is turned on a new year and we party. The traditions are special. Lent is not just a period to remember, but to realize that it is a time for us to grow, deepen our relationship with the Lord, and become holy, yes, to work at being a saint. The ashes we received this week, the stations we recall on the road to Calvary and our customs should become more meaningful. Our Holy Father insists that we can and are to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. If my game plan for lent is to achieve this goal, then I put aside the baggage which weighs me down through my prayer, sacrifice and good works. Thus the grace of God and His gracious gift will be ours. Are you a Business Owner? Have You Considered Advertising in the Parish Bulletin? The Daniel Plan is a groundbreaking healthy lifestyle program founded on biblical principles and focuses on The Essentials: Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and Friends. The program offers an innovative approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle where people get better together by optimizing their health in each of these life areas. Each essential supports and influences the others, offering a practical step-by-step approach for anyone to follow. The essentials of Faith and Friends are what we call the secret sauce that makes The Daniel Plan so effective. The program benefits are accelerated when done in a supportive community of friends because God designed us to thrive in relationships. We have learned that the process of getting healthy and staying healthy relies on the support and encouragement of friends. With the support of God and your group, you have far more than willpower helping you to make positive changes so you can be consistent and sustain your new healthy lifestyle. The overarching message of The Daniel Plan is about abundance, not deprivation, and this is why the plan is both transformational and sustainable. The Daniel Plan teaches a step-by-step approach and offers simple ways to incorporate healthy choices into your current lifestyle. 8 Why we Fast during Lent Lent has traditionally been the season where we give something up, often sweets or a favorite food, in order to focus on the sacrifice Christ made on the cross. But fasting is much more than a means of developing self control. Fasting is a spiritual and physical purification, the pangs of hunger remind us of our hunger for God. Fasting and abstinence help us to participate more fully in the cross of Christ. In the Western world, fasting from food is a reminder of our abundance and a way to walk in solidarity with people around the world who struggle with daily hunger as you fast. Limiting social-media exposure or fasting from the 24 hour news networks are ways to quiet our minds and open our hearts to transformation. We might also strive to fast from anger, road rage, workholism, judgment or jealousy. Lent is a time to fast from those things or habits that may have become a roadblock to our relationship with Christ. Church Guidelines for Fasting and Abstinence: The law of abstinence obliges those 14 years of age and older are not to eat meat on Fridays throughout the season of Lent as well as on Ash Wednesday. Lay Carmelites Please consider taking a spiritual journey---the Carmelite Way. For more information, contact Lydia Bargiuk at Calling All Prayer Warriors Join us as we gather to pray for the well being of our Parish.
