New Brochure Racks You may have noticed that there are new brochure racks located outside the Parish office door for your convenience. All brochures have been approved by Father Mike and we ask that nothing be placed within the racks without Father s approval. If you have any questions regarding the material selection please see Father Mike. Feel free to take a brochure if there is something that interests you. Jubilee Year of Mercy Prayer by Pope Francis Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan women: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. 3

6 Gray Prayer Petition Book The Gray Prayer Petition book is now located on the back right wall near the Stations of the Cross in the Worship area. In addition, the bulletin prayer board has been removed. Pease list all your prayer petitions in the Gray book. Gospel: Luke 13:22-30 Jesus warns that the door to God's kingdom will be locked for those who ignored his wishes. Many people will come from all nations and take their place in God's kingdom. Others will not be recognized by God, and he will reject them. My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord, or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges. Endure your trials as discipline. God treats you as sons. At the time all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it. On the day of baptism, the father is instructed similarly, being told you and your wife are the first teachers of your child in the way of faith. May you be the best teachers bearing witness to Christ by what you say and do. What a great responsibility, yet we can fail, if we do not know Christ, lack a relationship with Him, are not alive to the life of the church, and living fully the sacrament we are seeking for our child. Discipline is essential, but the way it is carried out makes the difference. We need to learn how to do this. Perhaps the meetings of couples, parent meetings for religious instruction, or the Joseph Ministry, can help our parents, our fathers and mothers, to enjoy their ministry in forming our children. Maybe we never took that course. The Word of God today is our invitation to revisit our unique role as parents. CHAIR AMNESTY If at some point you borrowed folding chairs from the church, now would be a wonderful time to return them. We are down a significant number of folding chairs in the APR and are in need of them. No questions asked, please return them as soon as possible. Thank you, Father Mike. Bethany Bereavement Our August Meeting will take place on the 25 th at 7:00pm in the PH#1. The discussion will be lead by Fr. Jim Redstone. Be with us as we journey through our losses and work towards acceptance, especially when it comes to significant dates without the physical presence of our loved ones. All are welcome. Military List We are updating our Parish Military List. If you have a loved one who is currently serving in one of the Armed Forces, please let the Parish office know their name, and what branch of the Military they are serving in. May God bless and keep safe all those who give of themselves to protect our freedom. Please pray for our troops. Food Pantry Our Ministry would like to thank our parishioners who donate meat, cheese & butter on a monthly basis. If you are able to help with these dairy products, there is a sign up sheet on the table in the commons area. How does your Garden Grow? Are you blessed with too many veggies in your garden? This is the time of year that lucky gardeners get gifted with an overabundance of vegetables from their gardens, but they can t eat fast enough. Our Helping Hands food pantry can always use fresh (not rotting or on the verge of being rotten) veggies! In honor of the Feast of the Assumption, which is traditionally a harvest festival as well as a holy day, please consider making a donation of some produce to Helping Hands! Garden Club Ministry Epiphany is starting a Garden club ministry. We are looking for people who like to plant flowers, trim, prune, weed, spread mulch and care for the plants on the church grounds. This new Ministry will be responsible for cultivating God s green earth outside the church. If you have a few hours a week to help with landscaping our parish grounds, we would appreciate hearing from you. This is another way you can share your time, talent, and treasures with your Epiphany family. If this is something you d like to do, please contact the parish office at or carol@epiphanychurchofbrick.org 6

Have you ever wondered or been asked why we do what we do? This weekly series will help you better understand our faith so that you can explain or even defend it to those who don't understand. We will meet on Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM in Parish Hall #3 beginning October 6, There are no fees or book requirements, in fact we even have free baby sitting upon request with three days notice. Our first three scheduled topics will be 10/6 Overview of Mass presented by Father Mike, 10/13 Liturgy of the Word presented by Ray Benedict, and 10/20 Liturgy of the Eucharist presented by Deacon Ron. Each series will begin with an easy to understand presentation on the topic, shared experiences, followed by open discussion and questions. Please sign up on the registration sheet in the Commons Area. If you have any questions, please Kim Lorentzen at kim@epiphanychurchofbrick.org. The Bible Is A Catholic Book Did you ever wonder how the Bible came into being? A little known, but easily documented fact is that the books of the Bible were compiled by the Catholic Church. For many years after Christ ascended into Heaven, there was debate about which scriptural writings were inspired by God. The canon of Scripture (the books of the Bible) was first formally decided at the Synod of Rome in 382. This decision was upheld at the Councils of Hippo (393) and Carthage (397). At these Catholic Church councils, the same 46 Old Testament and 27 New Testament books that appear in today s Catholic Bibles were declared to be inspired by God. As a side note, approximately 1200 years after this decision was made, Martin Luther and the Protestant reformers removed 7 books from the Old Testament. As a result, most Protestant Bibles are still missing these 7 books.
