6 To My Dear Brothers & Sisters of Epiphany, I would like to thank each and every one for your love, support and sympathy received during a difficult time of the loss of my son. I will be acknowledging each loving card in time, but needed to express my deep appreciation sooner than later. With deep affection Deacon Lou & Mary Gospel: Mark 1:40-45 Jesus takes pity on a leper and cures him of his disease with a warning not to say but to show himself to the priest and make an offering. Instead of remaining silent, the leper greatly publicized the healing, making it impossible for Jesus to enter the town openly. A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, If you wish you can make me clean. Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him and said to him, I do will it. Be made clean. This week, we begin the season of Lent, a time of renewal and repentance. We have a tendency to approach this time from a traditional posture. Ashes, meatless Fridays and Stations of the Cross. All are part of our practice and tradition. Wait a minute. Picture the lonely leper, ill and isolated, but with firm faith and determination, violating the rules imposed through Moses, approaching Jesus, seeking much needed help. I am he! Consider for a moment what it took for him to act. He was desperate, knowing the reality of His condition. He spoke If you wish, He heard the will of Jesus, felt His compassion, was touched by the healer. I am he! May I seriously consider how to begin Lent this year and live renewal and repentance with the leper to be healed, cleansed and enlivened. Lent is God s gift to me this year. Calling All Apostles What did the apostles think when, at the Last Supper, Jesus said tonight, one of you will betray me? On Tuesday of Holy Week our presentation of the Living Last Supper will seek to answer that question and we are seeking men who would be interested in playing the roles of those apostles. A small commitment of time but a big opportunity to impact your life and the lives of others. What to find out more? Call John Macerino at or the church office and we will contact you. 40"- 46" Flat Screen TVs & DVD Players Needed The Religious Education Department is in need of Two (2) 40" - 46" Flat Screen TVs and Two (2) DVD Players for our Religious Education Classrooms. 7 Lenten Regulations Ash Wednesday is on February 14 th. Here are the Lenten regulations from the Catholic Church in the United States for baptized Catholics: 1. The days of FAST (only one full meal) and ABSTINENCE (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. No dispensations are granted on these solemn days except for reason of sickness or those provided in canon law (below). Valentine s Day falls on Ash Wednesday, February 14 th this year. Since Ash Wednesday is one of only two solemn penitential days, no dispensations will be granted. 2. All other Fridays of Lent are days of ABSTINENCE (no meat). Those between the ages of are obliged to FAST (only one full meal) as above. From the age of 14, people are also obliged to ABSTAIN (no meat: this obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kinds, even though made from animal fat). The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious one for Catholics. Failure to observe one penitential day in itself is not considered a serious sin. It is the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of penitential days, that must be considered serious. The obligation, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year often called Easter duty for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February to Trinity Sunday, May th. However the Church s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause. Children s Liturgy of the Word Our youngest parishioners are invited to join us every Sunday, at the 10:00 Mass in the APR for the Children s Liturgy of the Word. Children s Liturgy is open to ages 4 through Second Grade. No need to pre-register or sign up. If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer to assist please contact Sharon MsSharonsCCD@gmail.com or leave a message with the Church office. Serving Our Lord Our Gracious God has and continues to give us numerous gifts and blessings - more than we realize...and most might say 'more than we deserve'. In the gospel message of February 3rd and 4th, Mark writes in Chapter 1, Verse 31 "Then the fever left her and she waited on them" which raises the question - What do we do and how do we show how grateful we are? The answer is to serve. The mission of the Liturgy Team is to serve the people of Epiphany by preparing the necessary elements of the Mass for meaningful and reverent Eucharistic celebrations on Sundays and major Feasts of the Liturgical Year. The Team extends an invitation to all parishioners to assist us in making our Sunday Liturgies more meaningful and spirited. We are currently in need of an Art & Environment Coordinator and a Recording Secretary to join our team. We meet on the third Tuesday of every month to discuss how we can work in unity to make our liturgies welcome and meaningful to parishioners and guests. In addition, the Team invites parishioners to serve as Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at our weekend liturgies. Please pray on this request and consider serving Our Lord either by joining the Team, or assisting at Mass as an outward sign that we are in fact grateful to HIM. If you would like to be part of any of the ministries please contact Bernie at or Helen at What is AmazonSmile?
