Hear the prayers of Your flock. Through the intercession of Your beloved priest, Saint John Vianney, we beg you to call to the sacramental priesthood generous men who will desire nothing more than to serve You in imitation of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, Our High Priest. And After You call them, we pray that you sustain the doubtful, Console the discourage, And strengthen the weak as they start the long and demanding preparation for the priesthood. Mary, Mother of priests, An example of faithful, humble, and joyful acceptance of God s will, Help all those who are called to the priesthood to open their ears and hearts To the gentle call of the Holy Spirit. There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it be accomplished! Your gift to the Society to assist those suffering in poverty will help set the earth on fire with the love of God. New Brochure Racks You May have noticed that there are new brochure racks located outside the Parish Office door for your convenience. All brochures have been approved by Father Mike and we ask that nothing be placed within the racks without Father's approval. If you have any questions regarding the material selection please see Father Mike. Feel free to take a brochure if there is something that interests you. Jubilee Year of Mercy Prayer by Pope Francis Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan women: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. 3

Canonization is the formal and definitive recognition by the Church of the heroic sanctity of one of its deceased members. By canonization, a person s name is entered in the canon of saints, meaning that it is forever part of the Church s official list of those venerated by the faithful as saints. The Real Mother Teresa While St. Teresa of Calcutta has entered into history as a great humanitarian, her strength and resolve did not stem from her own convictions. It came entirely from, as her friend Pope St. John Paul II said, prayer and in the silent contemplation of Jesus Christ, his Holy Face, his Sacred Heart. For Mother Teresa, Jesus and his sacrifice were the sum and total of her life. Because of that she had the courage to show the world the real face of Jesus, not the holy card image, but the Jesus who walked among the lepers, the prostitutes, the tax collectors, and the outcasts. She showed us the Jesus who healed the sick and gave the disheartened hope, the Jesus who stood up to injustice and hatred and who countered hate with love at every turn. Her legacy, as recognized in her canonization, was to make Jesus real to everyone who met her. Her faith was the core of all she did. In addition to attending Mass, she spent at least an hour every evening in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. She also spent time in mediation and reading. She said, We can work as many as ten or even twelve hours a day in service to the poor, following this schedule. Our Sunday Visitor, Inc. 5

6 Gospel: Luke 12:49-53 Jesus tells his disciples that his message will not bring peace to the earth. Instead, even families will become sharply divided because some members will embrace him, while others condemn him. Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us, while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus the leader and perfecter of faith... Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. Every four years, athletes from the entire world gather to compete for medals and recognition. While the Olympics last only a few weeks, the time of preparation for them seems eternal. Children grow as gymnasts, hurdlers jump over barriers, divers practice from dangerous heights, all for the glory of winning. How special it is for those who win the opportunity to participate. How much money is spent on tickets, and even on the construction of the venues. We are now in Rio for the competition. Another competition is for political office. Rallies, caucuses, town hall meetings and conventions have been in front of us for many, many months. The homestretch is near. We are observers. Hebrews tell of another race, the race in which we are competing today. We meet obstacles, barriers. We need to strengthen our conditioning through prayer and good works. Most of all, we are to fix our eyes on the goal, Jesus and eternal glory. Through my life of prayer, my spiritual conditioning, I grow. My trainer is Jesus who accompanies me, or one of the saints who teaches me, in the words of Pope Francis, on the road of perfection. When I am distracted, take a detour, or want to give up, I ask for the grace I need, I recalculate as the GPS tells me, and return to the embrace of Jesus.
