During that season we just feel a little different, a little better, a little more alive than at other times of the year. We feel it and know it even if it can t quite be described. December and the preparations for celebrating Christmas is that season for some. Fall and the colors bursting on mountains and along tree lined streets excite others. The warmth of the summer sun at the beach is the annual highlight for many. Spring is my favorite season. Spring fills me with hope and anticipation. Even though the arrival of spring blossoms brings a dose of pollens to which my allergies react vigorously, spring gives me a lift. The primary reason that Spring fills me with hope and anticipation is Easter and the celebration of Jesus Resurrection. That s the truth. It s more than simply what I m expected to say. God s power reaching into the tomb of darkness and death and bringing light and New Life out of it is Spring for me. Spring this year and the 50-day season of Easter include the image of an iceberg for me. Yes, it s unusual. An iceberg is a cold, winter image, not a warm spring image. It is staying with me because one of the books I have used for personal growth during Lent had this description of life: Our lives are like icebergs; what we know on the surface is a small fraction of what lies below the water level of waking conscious. That seems both obvious and profound. It is obvious that we keep some part of ourselves private, regardless of how much we trust even our closest friend. It is profound because there is no need to keep anything from the Risen Jesus. We can t, even if we wish we could. You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart is the way verse 6 of Psalm 51 describes it. There is hope and anticipation in that description of God s relationship with each of us. We can breathe deeply, inhaling the fresh air of spring as we realize that the dark, claustrophobic secrets that lie below the water level are brought into the light and fresh air of resurrection in the same way that Jesus was brought out of the dark, airless tomb of death into the light of New Life. Restore to me the joy of your salvation; and sustain me in a willing spirit. is the request of Psalm 51, verse 12. It is the prayer of Easter. It is our yearning each day. It is what is given to us right now, today, and every day. It is my hope this spring. Pastor Gary

A few words from the Council President... Officially, finally, it's SPRING! While fall is my favorite of the four seasons, I do love what spring represents. New life. Planting and blooming. Open windows for warmer weather. Later sunsets leading to more time outside and in the gardens. All of these make me feel more centered, connected to my environment. Now, if anyone would have told me ten years ago that I would enjoy gardening, I would have spun on my four-inch heels and sprayed my $8 coffee as I laughed aloud. Spending a whole day cutting, pruning, digging, planting and weeding would not have sounded like fun to my 20-something self. I remember not understanding why my dad and uncles took so much pride in their weed-free green lawns with the perfectly cut lines. I remember rolling my eyes and being slightly amused when the women in my family beamed as their flowers bloomed or they harvested their gardens. Yet, something changed when Matt and I moved into Bowie. We had a house and yard that was all ours. It was also a great candidate for an HGTV Fixer-Upper or DYI or Desperate Landscapes episode. Since there were no camera crews on hand during our many trips to Lowe s and Home Depot, we had to do the work ourselves. Our yard was so overgrown we feared that our dog would get eaten by whatever lurked in the neglected bushes that covered our patio. We were unsure of what could be hiding in the tangled mess of vines that eventually was cut down to reveal an additional 20 square feet of yard we had no idea was back there. It took us countless hours over several months to clean up the grounds. It took the help of family members and friends brave enough to battle the love of nature the previous owners left us. I can't even remember how many hot showers, tubs of Icy Hot and pain relievers we took as we reclaimed our yard - our home and place of refuge. Nearly nine years later, while I'm out there weeding, planting and cutting grass, I can relate to my elders' feeling of connection to their land and of satisfaction in maintaining it. I dare say I look forward to carving out time to be outside wearing my stained visor with my gloved hands in dirt, listening to our girls squeal at worms we find and marvel at what is growing before their eyes. It's still not perfect, but we work to keep it up and take pride in our progress. As we think of the new life and growth spring brings, I'm reminded that if we want to feel that kind of connection in our relationship with God, we have to treat it like a garden. We must plant it. Nurture it. Weed it. Water it. Maintain it. Even when making the time to do so feels like an overwhelmingly inconvenient chore do it. I hope we all can find the hidden pleasure in working our spiritual gardens this season and see what grows. In Peace, Melissa Bitter 2

4 Serve Team Christmas in April/ Warm Nights Thank You! Thank you! Thank You! Christmas in April was April 29 and thirteen from All Saints and four from CCPC participated in working on a home in the Pointer Ridge section of Bowie. Lots of work outside was done including plenty of pruning, weeding, spreading mulch, fixing a gate, and power washing. Inside work included lots of painting, fixing kitchen cabinets, and cleaning. Chris Greenawalt did a fantastic job with lunch. Thanks to Chuck Arnold for leading this service project. Our gratitude is also extended to the more than 40 ASLC members and friends who are helping to assure that our homeless guests are served delicious meals and are the recipients of warm hospitality and personal attention to their needs. We are also blessed to have Bowie Girl Scout Troop 542, Village Baptist Church, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Reformed Presbyterian Church, Union United Methodist Church, and United Parish assisting us with an evening meal and/or a day's lunches. Warm Nights Assistance The ASLC Women s Book Group provided breakfast for Warm Nights guests at All Saints on Monday, May 1. Thanks to all who have offered support by providing food and/or assisting with serving the breakfast. Karen Lee would be grateful to have any donations of food or assistance for breakfasts for the rest of the week as well. Contact Karen Lee at karenleebanks57@gmail.com. All Saints Lutheran Church Scholarships One of the striking practices of the ELCA occurs when we have a baptism during a Sunday service. Not only are the parents and sponsors asked about wanting to pursue a Christian life, but the congregation is asked to support the parents in their role of raising their children in the life of our church. All Saints takes this promise a step further with a wonderful program that awards scholarships to those who have been active in the life of the congregation and are off to postsecondary education. MAY is SCHOLARSIP MONTH marks the 15 th year that All Saints offers this opportunity for our youth. Please consider making a donation to the ASLC Scholarship Fund during the month of May. Scholarship awards are based solely on the amount of money collected. Donations may be deposited in the offering plate with a notation that the gift is for ASLC scholarships or sent to the church with a similar annotation. Applications Applications for the All Saints Lutheran Church are due by Sunday May 7, The applications are available online at Tap the "What's Going On" tab and navigate to "Scholarships 2017." You will find two applications, one for new scholarship requests and one for continuing scholarship awards. For more information, please contact Roz Kleffman, Kurt Muller or Millie Osborne. 5

6 Adult Learning at ASLC May 2017 All are welcome to participate! Classes meet in the Southwest Classroom unless otherwise noted. Nursery care is available. Whether long-time member or new arrival, come and check it out! You are welcome to participate in any session. Sunday 9:45 AM: Track 1 REFORMATION 500 When Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenberg in 1517, no one expected the breadth of evangelical reforms in Christian teaching and practice that followed. In every dimension of Christian faith, a renewed trust in God s forgiving mercy replaced a reliance on teachings and practices that, like the sale of indulgences, were vulnerable to abuse and corruption. In 2017, Track 1 of the Adult Learning program is studying Martin Luther s life and writings in celebration of the Reformation anniversary. 01/08/2017 to 06/25/2017 Luther: Gospel, Law, & Reformation This is a 24-week DVD course on Luther's theology as well as major issues and events in the Reformation as it unfolded in Luther's life after he posted the 95 Theses. The course is taught by Dr. Phillip Cary, Professor of Philosophy at Eastern University in Pennsylvania. Dr. Cary has a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Yale University. For more information about this course, please speak to the course facilitator, Sven Allenbach- Schmidt. Wednesday 7:00 PM: May 10, 17, 24, 31 Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Lutheran Pastor, Christian Martyr A four-session study of Dietrich Bonhoeffer was presented on Sunday mornings in March and April. Pastor Gary will facilitate that same four-session study on WEDNESDAY evenings at 7:00 pm in May. The sessions will be: May 10 - What is the Church? - Bonhoeffer s views on how his faith in Lutheran traditions formed his future ministry. May 17 - Living in a Christian Community His experiences and insights leading an underground ministry in Germany during the Nazi government. May 24 - Religion-less Christianity - His expanding ecumenical work and his questioning of the changes to the Christian church in Nazi Germany. May 31 - Come and Die- His knowledge of and willingness to participate in an attempt on Hitler s life while understanding the risk to his own. These sessions are intended to introduce Dietrich Bonhoeffer to those who were unable to participate in the Sunday morning sessions and to extend the conversations for those who participated on Sunday mornings and desire to continue learning about him. So, ALL are welcome. Tuesday Bible Study Luther: Gospel, Law, and Reformation A group of adults meets every Tuesday morning 10 am - 12:00 noon for BIBLE STUDY. We will continue the study of Luther: Gospel, Law, and Reformation. 6

9 Fellowship Ministry Team The Fellowship Ministry planning team has been discussing what fellowship is and what it should be for All Saints. One item the team has been considering is the term Fellowship itself. We have it on our website and intend it to be a way to welcome new folks. But is it church jargon, really only known to folks who are familiar with church? Does it perhaps exclude people who do not know church? A real-time query was made on Facebook during our April 1 meeting asking When you hear the word fellowship what does it mean to you? Some replies were the following: To me, it means spending time with people with whom I have a particular thing in common--- usually a spiritual belief, but it could also be working toward a common goal. Fellowship for me means community - a closer bond, sometimes of commonality but definitely of familiarity. When I was a kid I thought it was a bunch of men on a ship like the Mayflower. And finally: of the Ring One online dictionary defines fellowship as friendly association, especially with people who share one's interests. They valued fun and good fellowship as the cement of the community. Synonyms: companionship, companionability, sociability, comradeship, camaraderie, friendship, mutual support. In the way in which All Saints does so well, the Fellowship Ministry team is exploring how we should be intentional in our Fellowship activities, whatever they may be. Please share your thoughts with members of the team so we can all discern what God is calling us to do in the community of All Saints and the community in which All Saints has been placed by God.
