Parents are encouraged to attend worship services with their children. This begins the good habit from an early age of worshiping with others. However, if you feel your child's behavior may be distracting to you or others who are worshiping, please feel free to speak with an usher for guidance to the staffed nursery. Welcome to the Rev. Richard H. Graham, Bishop, Metropolitan Washington D.C. Synod, ELCA. Bishop Graham served as Pastor, Hope Lutheran Church, College Park prior to his call as Bishop. Welcome to the Rev. Dr. Richard Dowhower. He is the Preacher today. Pastor Dowhower served as Pastor, All Saints Lutheran Church, Bowie from 1989 to He and his wife, Kay, now reside in Mechanicsburg, PA. Welcome to the Rev. Ray E. Blanset who is the Presiding Minister today. Pastor Blanset served as Interim Pastor, All Saints Lutheran Church during He and his wife, Betty reside in Annapolis. The hymns and anthems being sung today were used at the Festival of Dedication worship service on September 27, Following the 11:00 service, a catered Celebration Luncheon will be served in Fellowship Hall. This will give everyone the opportunity for reuniting with friends and sharing of memories. THANK YOU TO Nancy-Pat Weaver for leading music during worship today. ADULT CLASS: Track 1 will continue today a 16 week study of the Gospel narratives - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in an exciting journey through the life and ministry of Jesus. The Greatest Story: Jesus is from Augsburg Fortress Book of Faith initiative. This course is for anyone who wants to get a big-picture overview of the Bible, its story, and how that story connects with our personal stories. It has been developed especially for adults, particularly those who are new to Bible study. The course will engage the participants in the biblical story through actual storytelling, visual sand art presentations, and reflections on the text. Questions accompanying each section of the session are intended to help participants reflect on the meaning of the story, how they live in the story, and how the story lives in them. The course is not about memorizing obscure details or testing prior Bible knowledge. It simply aims to introduce the story and let it speak for itself. The class meets in the North Classroom. ADULT CLASS: Track 2 will continue today. It is a class about moral deliberation on faith and criminal justice as reflected in a draft ELCA social statement: Hearing the Cries: Faith and Criminal Justice. But the version anticipated to be considered by the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly isn t final yet! The document reads in part: The ELCA speaks in this statement from and to its members, to those impacted by crime, and to those who work for the public good in various civil offices. Drawing on human reason, this church joins many others seeking to identify areas in the criminal justice system in urgent need of attention and reform. At the same time, drawing from Holy Scripture, we hold up a vision of justice that is wondrously richer than the justice we can expect from human institutions (pg. 3). Main Topics of Discussion will be: Many Voices, Law Enforcement, Judicial System, Corrections, Life After Crime. The class meets in the North Classroom. 16

2 SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES for students in every grade, including Middle School and High School begin each Sunday at 9:45 am in the sanctuary with singing, a theme presentation, and the financial offering. The theme for the offerings this fall is Feeding Hungry People. The CROP WALK will be the first recipient of the Sunday School offering. See you in class. BIBLE STUDY on Tuesday mornings has begun. We meet every Tuesday morning 10:00 am 12:00 noon. The letter to the GALATIANS will be the focus of study this fall. Study materials will be provided. Just show up with your Bible and an open heart and mind. Both will be stimulated by God s Holy Word and the discussion of the group. FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY CLASSES: Beginning Thursday, September 27, at 7:00 pm through November 29, All Saints will offer classes from Dave Ramsey s Financial Peace University. The 9-week program is a biblically-based, video-driven small group study that teaches families to beat debt, build wealth, and give like never before. Weekly classes are approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours in length and will be facilitated by Sharron Sample. Feel free to call her on , or her at Sharron.sample@gmail.com with any questions you may have. BOWIE INTERFAITH FOOD PANTRY continues to appreciate the support of All Saints Lutheran Church. The pantry food supply is low and is in need of: pasta products, rice products, canned fruit, canned tuna, soups, and dry cereal. WOMEN S BOOK GROUP: October is Mystery Month for the ASLC Women's Book Group. We will meet on Saturday, October 13 to discuss Missing Persons by Claire O'Donohue. RoAnne Hartfield will host the group at Collington Episcopal Life Care Community. Norma Allenbach-Schmidt and Karen Lee Banks will lead the discussion. We will gather for breakfast in the Collington Dining Room at 8:30 am, and begin our discussion around 9:00 am. SAVE THE DATE! Come celebrate Oktoberfest at All Saints on November 3. AN IMPORTANT DAY IN OUR COUNTRY S HISTORY 150 years ago: Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, 1862 "... on the first day of January... all persons held as slaves within any State, or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free." President Abraham Lincoln, preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, September 22, In July 1862, President Lincoln read his "preliminary proclamation" to his Cabinet, then decided to wait for a Union military victory to issue it. On September 22, 1862, following the victory at Antietam, he signed the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, formally alerting the Confederacy of his intention to free all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states. One hundred days later, with the Confederacy still in full rebellion, President Abraham Lincoln issued the final Emancipation Proclamation. 1 The most lasting legacy of the Emancipation Proclamation is its symbolic importance. Although the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in the nation, it did fundamentally transform the character of the war, says the National Archives Our Documents project. After January 1, 1863, every advance of Federal troops expanded the domain of freedom. From the first days of the Civil War, slaves had acted to secure their own liberty. The Emancipation Proclamation confirmed their insistence that the war for the Union must become a war for freedom. It added moral force to the Union cause and strengthened the Union both militarily and politically

3 NOMINATING COMMITTEE: The 2012 Nominating Committee has convened and is seeking nominees to serve on the Church Council, Mission Endowment Fund Committee, and the 2013 Nominating Committee. In addition, nominees to attend the 2013 Synod Assembly and nominees to fill the role of Financial Secretary need to be identified. Details regarding length of term will be included in the October issue of the Grapevine. If you feel called to serve in one of these positions, please contact: Dan Bendt, ; Dot Christon, ; Dave Dasenbrock, ; or Emily Summerlot, OPERATION KID COMFORT QUILTS for Children of Deployed Parents October 26-27, 2012 All Saints Lutheran Church Please join us in making personalized picture quilts for children whose mothers or fathers are deployed in the service of our country. Pictures on cloth will be provided by Operation Kid Comfort, and we will use this very easy and fun pattern to make quilts. We need help setting up tables and equipment on Friday and we ll do some advance pressing and cutting fabric to sew on Saturday. All levels of sewing talent are needed! Bring your sewing machine if you have one, and enjoy making these lovely quilts. Bowie CROP Walk October 7 Mark your calendars. The annual Bowie CROP Walk to end world hunger is scheduled for Sunday, October 7th.. The walk will begin at 1:00 at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, Annapolis Road, with registration from 12:15-1:00. This year the Bowie walk hopes to raise $15,000 and to recruit greater involvement by more churches and civic organizations. Last year 108 walkers representing eight churches raised $12, 025. You can support the walk in two ways: 1) Be one of ASLC's walkers and help us reach our ASLC goal of $4,000 through gathering walker pledges. Last year the Saints had twelve walkers and raised $2,465. We can do even better this year. Many have left their homes for more secure places within Syria while others are crossing the borders into the neighboring countries of Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq in search of safety and shelter. Stretched resources and political dynamics are increasing tension for those who are most vulnerable in the area. We are currently at work through our partners in Syria and the surrounding area. Our work with The Lutheran World Federation and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land includes meeting the needs of Syrian refugees who have traveled to Jordan. Camp management and the provision of access to proper shelter have been the primary focus of our work. We have committed $200,000 to help support the people who have been displaced within Syria. We are also granting another $250,000 to provide camp management and housing for refugees in Jordan. But we need you. It is because of generous gifts from people like you that we are able to respond to people in need. Our unique relationships with Lutheran churches around the world enable us to be on the ground making a difference. Your gift designated for Syrian conflict will be used in full 100 percent to respond. Your checks can be made out to ASLC with "ELCA Syria conflict" noted on the memo line. 19
