1 The MISSION of All Saints Lutheran Church is to GATHER all people in a community immersed in WORSHIP and LEARNING that equips us to SERVE the world in the name of JESUS. May 24, 2013 A Prayer Petition for the People of Central Oklahoma, from Bishop Girlinghouse (Arkansas Oklahoma Synod): God of steadfast love, though destructive winds swirl around us, shattering our lives, we believe and trust that you are with us, just as you have always walked with your people through storm and strife. Today, we pray for the people of Carney, Little Axe, Shawnee, Newcastle and Moore, Oklahoma and all those affected by tornadoes this past week. Use us to surround them with your love, compassion and mercy. Provide them with caregivers and friends to accompany them on the long road to recovery. Be with all those who weep and mourn during these days, and comfort them with your hope and the promise of resurrection. We pray all these things in the name of Jesus Christ, who gave his life so that we might know that you have the power to bring life from death. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. GATHER Liaison: Jim Sichelman. SABBATH OPPORTUNITY- OVERNIGHT CAMPING: Everyone is invited to pitch a tent in the clearing on the North Property for an overnight camping event on THIS Friday, May 24th. The night will start at 6:00 pm. We will play outside; possibly work in the garden, and share snacks and S'mores. A light breakfast will be provided, and we'll be wrapped up by 9:00 am. Everyone is welcome, even at the last minute, but for planning purposes, we would appreciate an RSVP by May 22. To RSVP or to ask questions, please contact Emily Summerlot at Emily_summerlot@yahoo.com or SCHUBERT SINGERS SPRING CONCERT will be Friday, May 31, 2013 at 7:00 pm. Schubert Singers is an offering of Friendship Landing Center for the Arts, a nonprofit art initiative for children, founded by Alicia Cordelle THE JUNE MEETING OF THE ALL SAINTS WOMEN S BOOK GROUP will be held on June 8, 2013, when we will discuss Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland. We will meet at the home of Kim Watson on Kinder Place in Bowie. Liz Muller will lead the discussion. The book will be of special interest to all who enjoy the beauty of color, like to experience or create art, appreciate Tiffany glass, and would like to know more about the earliest examples of the "Women's Movement" as the 20th century began. We will take some time at the conclusion of our discussion to offer suggestions for books for our September 2013 June 2014 Reading Year. All are welcome!
2 WORSHIP-Liaison: Tim Bensch HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY is THIS Sunday, May 26. We will be reciting the Athanasian Creed. In addition, we will have a Memorial Day observance. At the 11:00 AM service, there will be a Baccalaureate prayer service for recent graduates. SABBATICAL DEVOTIONS: Please pick up a print copy of the Sabbatical Committee's weekly devotions from the narthex table if you are not receiving them via each week. COMMUNION BREAD: One Sunday per month, families will be invited to bake the bread for Holy Communion and bring the gifts to the altar as the offering is brought forward. You will be asked to make enough bread for both services but will only need to be present at the service you normally attend. Please use your favorite bread recipe, leavened or unleavened. Contact Ann Greenawalt at themuffinann@yahoo.com or to participate in this new ministry. LEARN-Liaison: Kasey Schumacher CONGRATULATIONS to Uzoma Ariguzo and Andrew Braun on their upcoming high school graduations. Uzoma will be graduating from Charles Herbert Flowers High School on May 28 and attending the University of Maryland in the fall. Andrew Braun will be graduating from DeMatha Catholic High School on June 7 and will be attending St. Mary s College of Maryland in the fall. ADULT FAITH FORMATION TRACK 1 continues to study the Gospel of Luke using materials from Augsburg Fortress Book of Faith series. The theme for this Sunday s lesson is How Did Jesus Resurrection Change the World? On Sunday June 2, the class will begin the Augsburg Adult Summer Bible Study God s People Worship. We will be looking at the strengths and weaknesses of the worship practices of our ancient Jewish sisters and brothers. This class is led by Sven Allenbach-Schmidt. ADULT FAITH FORMATION TRACK 2:June 16, 23, 30 The ASLC sabbatical focus for Sunday morning Track 2 will be PRAYER. Ruth-Ann Killion will lead reflections on this spiritual discipline in the Southwest Classroom. Come join us for a series on prayer in June! Have you prayed together lately? We will conduct quiet and joyful, joint prayer and praise. What does it mean when our prayers are not answered? Come and discuss what theologians have discovered through study of this question. There are many surprising answers to unanswered prayer! Pick your prayer topic. We will identify a topic on the first Sunday together and then discuss on the 30th. SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES are on summer recess. TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY is on summer recess. It will resume in September. SUPPORT ASLC SCHOLARSHIP FUND- May has been designated ASLC Scholarship Month. Please consider making a donation this month to support the youth of our church. During the past ten years, a total of 47 ASLC youth have received scholarship money to assist them with pursuing their education. Money is given directly to the youth to help defray the rising cost of books, tuition, travel or anything they might need was a record year with ten ASLC youth attending colleges. Additional application requests are expected this year. Scholarship awards are based totally on our
3 giving. Please give generously. Designated envelopes for ASLC Scholarship donations will be provided. You may also designate "ASLC Scholarship" on your weekly giving envelope. Thank you for your continued support of this ongoing program. For more information, please see Roz Kleffman, Kurt Muller or Millie Osbourne. RAIN GARDEN WORKSHOP - Save the Date: Thursday, August 8, 7 pm at ASLC. The Bowie Gardens for Wildlife Habitat Team, with support from the University of Maryland Environmental Finance Center, will host a rain garden workshop in conjunction with storm water management planning in Bowie. The workshop will be part presentation and part site-walk (weather permitting). The workshop will be open to the public, with outreach to places of worship, home owner associations, and businesses. SERVE-Liaison: Susan Beers LUTHREAN DISASTER RELIEF for OKLAHOMA TORNADO VICTIMS Please consider giving a gift to Lutheran Disaster Response to support their assistance to those recovering from the devastating tornado that went through Moore, Oklahoma, on May 20th as well as those affected by other damaging storms that have touched down in Kansas, Illinois, Iowa and Texas recently. You may make your check out to ASLC but please designate "LDR (Lutheran Disaster Response): US Tornados" on the memo line. Cash donations may be placed in an envelope labeled with the same LDR: Tornadoes designation. 100% ofyour donation will be used to help the survivors of tornadoes rebuild their lives and livelihoods. BOWIE INTERFAITH FOOD PANTRY continues to appreciate the support of All Saints Lutheran Church. The greatest needs are canned soup, canned fruit, boxed potato products, canned tuna and canned meat. Thank you! PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: The next get-together of the Prayer Shawl Ministry group will be Thursday, June 13, at the home of Jan Withers, 2457 Symphony Lane, Gambrills. Time: 1:00 p.m. Bring your yarn, crochet hooks and knitting needles and we ll have fun working on our projects together. Bring a friend. All are welcome. SPRING YARD SALE: Instead of throwing out all of your unwanted objects and clothes as you spring clean, please donate them to the Youth Group church yard sale which will be taking place on Saturday, June 22, 2013, from 9:00 am-2:00 pm. You may drop off any donated items at church starting Sunday, June 16, 2013 to Friday, June 21, All proceeds earned at the yard sale will go towards funding the mission trip to Maine this summer. All items such as books, toys, clothes, and household appliances that are in fair/working condition will be accepted. At the end of the day any items that have not been sold will be further donated to Good Will. Please feel free to come out and look around at our yard sale as other events will be going on too, and tell your friends and family. Thank you for all your support and donations; they are much appreciated by the Teen Youth Group. TEEN YOUTH MISSION TRIP: This summer, the youth will be participating in a mission trip to Portland, Maine the week of 7/21-7/26. This mission trip is through the organization Experience Mission. Portland is home to many refugees who have moved here from war-torn countries in Africa and Asia. While there, the youth will be serving
4 the community. The group will leave Bowie on Saturday, July 20th, and arrive home Saturday, July 27th. Keep an eye out for upcoming youth group fundraisers, including: Mother's Day (May 12) hanging flower basket sale and a June 22nd Car Wash, Yard Sale, and Burger Burn. DUST OFF YOUR TOOLS! We have an opportunity to help rebuild the New Jersey Shore ravaged by Storm Sandy. Some of the same organizers we worked with in Biloxi/Gulfport are supporting the Atlantic City Long Term Recovery Group (ACLTRG), and we will by joining that effort. Mark your calendars for August 11-17, 2013, and join us in Atlantic City! For more information, watch the Grapevine and the website, or contact Gary Beecher (gary.beecher@gmail.com; ) or Liz Muller (eamuller@verizon.net; ). SUPPORT-Liaison: Fred Wentland WHAT S BLOOMING NOW? There are two native perennials in the rain garden that are blooming now. The plant with the yellow flower is Golden Ragwort, a member of the aster family. The flower blooms March-April, and blooms last about 3 weeks. When happy, it spreads rapidly. Mowing will keep it in the rain garden; we'll watch to see if it flourishes and behaves within the rain garden. The plant with the fragrant purple flowers is Virginia spiderwort. Individual blooms only last 1 or 2 days, but plant continues to blossom throughout spring. Assisting with WORSHIP this Sun.
