1 August Volume 35 Issue 6 Pastor Jenny's Ponderings: From Ghost Stories to Superheroes! Mark Your Calendar August 5 & 6 Communion August 14 Awana Training August 16 Celebration Concert & Farewell to Julie Schwartz August 20 Backpack Blessing Teacher Training August 27 Amazing Chemistry Show September 3 Fall Sunday Worship Schedule Begins I don't know about you, but our sermon and worship series this summer has been empowering, comforting, and challenging! The ghost story testimonies that have been given by our McCabe folks have been so beautifully personal and so spiritually powerful; I have deeply appreciated each testimony and am eager to hear the rest of them! (By the way, many people have asked to see the testimonies again. We are working on getting them onto our website and/or preparing a DVD with each testimony on it.) After a summer of powerful Holy Spirit stories, we knew we had to follow-up with something equally powerful...though perhaps in a slightly different way. So, we're going from ghost stories to superheroes! Beginning on our fall kick-off weekend (September 9 & 10), we'll dive into a sermon and worship series that connects biblical heroes to contemporary comic superheroes. More detailed information will come in next month's newsletter! In The United States, we have a fascination with superheroes and rightly so. Though fictional, they bring mercy and justice into our imaginations. They spark a sense of hope that good triumphs over evil. They summon the hero in all of us. And, of course, they make for incredible summer blockbusters at the movies! But, seriously, so many themes within the superhero genre connect with biblical themes...and we are excited to spend a few weeks in September focused on those themes. Now, though it may not be obvious in the featured photo, it's me in one of my very first Halloween costumes: Pastor Jenny as a toddler, donning Wonder Woman attire. Over the next few weeks, get your own superhero costumes ready, because we'd love to have you arrive for worship during this September series dressed appropriately! And by appropriately I mean dressed as your favorite superhero (though in a church-appropriate way). Peace in Christ, Jenny Hallenbeck Orr, Senior Pastor

2 Words from Our Discipleship Pastor As we ve been prayer walking McCabe s neighborhoods on Wednesday evenings this summer, I am repeatedly reminded, and thankful, that God has placed us right here, right now. The Spirit is active and alive and moving and we get to be part of it! The Spirit is showing up in people investing in McCabe s Awana Ministry launch scheduled for this fall. So far we have: Over 25 people signed up to volunteer with the ministry. We have received very generous financial donations to cover individual scholarships for children. (These donations range from covering 16 to 60 individual scholarships at $35/child). Through generous financial donations we have carpeted two additional classrooms in the upper Education wing. August 5: McCabe will be present outside for everyone coming to and from the Capital A fare. August 14: Awana Specific Training with our Awana Missionaries from 5:00-7:00 p.m. August 27: The Amazing Chemistry Show, 4:00-7:00 p.m. We are currently recruiting help for the show! September 6: McCabe s Awana Open House for families. September 13: McCabe s first night of Awana ministry! We would love to: Have 10 more people interested in serving in a part of this ministry. Continue to receive monetary investments for scholarships and ministry support. We are now planning on providing scholarships to all participating children for this initial ministry year. We are also planning to invite families to consider paying it forward. For example, if someone paid their scholarship, and if they have the means, we are inviting participants to consider supporting one or more scholarships for the future. Have people stop upstairs in the Education wing to see the newly carpeted rooms (E-3 & E-5). We still have two additional rooms we d like to carpet when funding comes available. The new carpet helps to create an atmosphere of welcome and hospitality that will further learning of Scripture and prayer. Have additional support at the table on August 5th. Please feel free to visit with Tina, Jerry, or myself if you are interested in helping. Have full tables at the Awana training on August 14th. Have 40+ volunteers to help with this event. 2 A large part of the help will include being present and available to help welcome and guide people to make sure the stations have adequate support and supplies. (We actually need 40 volunteers for this event). Have an active, vibrant, friendly, Christ-centered atmosphere during our Awana Open House on September 6th. Have volunteers, children, and families excited and engaged in Scripture, prayer, games, and excited to tell their friends about it. As we embark on this ministry adventure together, may we be repeatedly amazed at how God has been and is currently showing up in very real ways. In service with you, Mark E. We all need a plan for our money. Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan! It teaches God s ways of handling money. Through video teaching, class discussions, and interactive small group activities, FPU present Biblical, practical steps to get from where you are to where you ve dreamed you could be. This plan will show you have to get rid of debt, manage you money, spend and save wisely, and much more! Class starts Wednesday, September 13 in McCabe s Great Hall, 6:00-7:30 p.m. for nine weeks. There is a $50.00 discount if you signup to take the class at McCabe. If you have taken the course in the past, you are welcome to attend all or any individual classes for free. Signup at the church office, at: jjoersz@mccabeumc.com or at the Welcome Center.

4 Wednesday Prayer Walks This Summer Can you believe that this summer is almost over? I just can t believe it. Unfortunately I did not get to Mission U this July because we hayed later than usual because of the dry summer. Although, there wasn t much hay, the same ground had to be covered. As a unit McCabe was so lucky to have Sharon Miller and Rachel Bahrenburg attend Mission U so we can look forward to some great reports on information from there. Thanks to much ladies! Any of you ladies who read books for the reading program, please get your reports in to Selma Kerzman or myself. If you want, you can leave them at the church office for pickup. I am so very happy to say we have finally gotten some storage area of our own. McCabe Circles were given the storage room in the back of room E-19. Yea! Now we need to get all our supplies together in one place. This project taught me patience. September will be the Annual Sakakawea District meeting held in McCabe. The 15th will be for the District officers and will include McCabe serving the supper. The 16th will be for all members and will include a lite breakfast and lunch. Legacy UM Church will serve breakfast and we will take care of lunch on the 16th. All will be catered but we need lots of help. As always Al Ehrmantraut and Irene Wentz will be in charge of the kitchen. You two ladies have no idea how very much we appreciate you and thank the Lord for you. Our next Executive meeting will be on Thursday, August 10, at 10:30 a.m. in room E-19. The end of the summer picnic is still planned but date and time will be announced later. As part of our ongoing breakthrough prayer efforts, this summer, we are going to prayer walk our McCabe neighborhood every Wednesday from 5:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. It has been part of our official (and unofficial!) prayers this past year that the Holy Spirit would breakthrough, enabling us to share God's love in bold, new ways in our neighborhood and beyond: so we're going to intentionally pray for our neighborhood this summer! Join in by meeting in the West McCabe parking lot (off 5 th Street); briefly pray together and then deploy ourselves to prayer walk; and gather back in the West parking lot for closing prayer at 6:00 p.m. If you'd like to pray with us, but walking the neighborhood is difficult, join us anyway! We'll open the building and you can pray inside. (That in mind, we'll prayer walk inside the building if weather is inclement and outdoor walking is unadvisable.) Through these prayer walks, we'll ask that God bless the people of our immediate neighborhood, and that God would lead the children and families of our neighborhood into relationship with Jesus Christ (particularly through the Awana ministry we're starting this September). Please connect with Pastor Jenny or Pastor Mark with any questions. Are You A Carpenter? McCabe s Board of Trustees is seeking bidders for a portable welcome center. Please contact Jim Jenness at or the church office at I found a quote from my favorite singer that I have found to be so true To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone. -Reba McEntire Take care all and God bless, Gerry Ann Small, UMW Leader Thanks to Jerry & Linda Suko and Jay & Alfhild Ehrmantraut for each purchasing carpet for rooms E-3 & E-5 in the Education wing. Stop and take a look! If you re interested in investing to help carpet additional rooms, we will be happy to answer any questions you might have or get cost estimates. -Pastor Jenny & Pastor Mark 4 Thanks to you all for your donations over the last six months (January - June), totaling $ We appreciate your support. -Bismarck Emergency Food Pantry.

7 Fall Worship Times: Keep Alert for Info! Over the last several months, members of our McCabe staff, along with our Leadership Team, have been having conversations about our overall weekend worship schedule. Considering attendance patterns and time-related logistics (like flipping the parking lot between services), we're exploring some potential changes for Fall. Please stay tuned for more information about this! And please know we would welcome any questions you may have regarding this note. - Pastors Jenny & Mark Celebration Concert for Julie Schwartz: August 16 th It is with much gratitude that we send our long-time McCabe Organist, Julie Schwartz, into her retirement. Julie's final weekend as our Organist is August 12 & 13 and we will honor her and her musical gifts with a Celebration Concert on Wednesday, August 16 th, at 7:00 p.m., in our sanctuary (reception to follow in the Great Hall). This concert will feature McCabe vocalists and instrumentalists, McCabe Bells, our Chancel Choir, and, of course, Julie herself! Welcome to Our Next Organist & Choir Accompanist As we say good-bye to Julie Schwartz, we also say hello to John Clodfelter, our next Organist & Choir Accompanist! An Indiana native, John is finishing a Master of Music degree in collaborative keyboard from the University of North Dakota. John's first weekend as our Organist will be August 19 & 20, but he will offer the postlude at our Celebration Concert for Julie on August 16 th. Welcome, John! SAVE THE DATES: Sept. 29-Oct. 1 (MCCI Weekend) For about a year, McCabe has been involved in a church vitality process called the Missional Church Consultation Initiative ( the MCCI ). Up until now, the MCCI has been helping us be open to new ways of doing church. (Think about our Breakthrough Prayer efforts!) And, in a couple of months (September 29 October 1), a team of MCCI leaders will come to McCabe for a weekend event that will include: conversations with individuals and groups, large-group training events, as well as the creation and sharing of a set of prescriptions" to help launch us into a new life cycle of growth and fruitfulness. We want as many McCabe folks as possible to participate in this important weekend, so mark your calendars! Mark your calendars and pray, pray, pray that God's Spirit will continue to do powerful things through McCabe! Move That Bus! As of mid-july, just over $8,250 has come in toward a new-to-us bus! This bus will help us transport persons to and from worship who might not otherwise be able to drive themselves here. If you've been in our sanctuary recently, you've perhaps noticed the little paper buses on the tops of the ends of the pews in the sanctuary...well, every time we top another $1,000 mark, the buses move up a pew; in the Great Hall we have another way of marking the bus's journey, so check that out, too! At this point, our total fundraising goal is $30,000. Thank you to those of you who've already given toward this bus and its future ministry at McCabe! Thanks, also, to those of you who have been keeping your eye out for used 15-passenger buses with wheelchair lifts. God just might lead us to the right bus at a lower price than we'd originally anticipated! Would You Like to Be Part of McCabe s Prayer Chain? 8 Wholly Healthy Greetings McCabe friends, It s so hot that the birds are using potholders to pull the worms out of the ground. It is so hot that hot water comes out of both taps. It is so hot that when the temp drops below 90 degrees we feel a little chilly. Lastly (thank goodness!), it is so hot that the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance! Now that one has some potential for health benefits! Actually, in the heat of the past few weeks I just keep telling myself...40 below, 40 below. We all know how soon that will return! Anyone in the mood for a little good news? Well, let me share some with you. COFFEE HELPS US LIVE LONGER!! Last week a team of researchers released the results of a 16 year study on the effects of coffee on one s longevity. One study researched 520,000 people in 10 European countries and a second study focused on non-white populations study of 185,000 African- Americans, Native-Americans, Hawaiians, Japanese-Americans, and Latinos. In both studies, Veronica W. Setiawan, co-author of the study and an associate professor of preventative medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California, found that coffee increased our longevity across all races. It was found that drinking even one cup a day lowered the risk of death by 12%. Drinking 3-5 cups a day (now we re talking!) lowered the risk of death by 18% compared to people who did not drink coffee. Interestingly enough, it did not matter if the coffee was caffeinated or decaffeinated. The researchers say the benefit comes from the actual coffee bean itself which is rich with antioxidants, phenolic compounds, vitamin B3, magnesium and several other beneficial minerals. In the European study, people who were drinking coffee tended to have lower levels of inflammation, healthier lipid profiles and better glucose control compared with those who weren t. Coffee consumption seems to reduce heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease, stroke, Parkinson s disease, diabetes and kidney disease. It is still unclear which particular compounds provide health benefits, but those researching this study said they would be interested in exploring this further. Marc Gunter, the lead author of the European studies stated, Due to the limitations of observational research, we are not at the stage of recommending people to drink more or less coffee. That said, our results suggest that moderate coffee drinking-up to around three cups per day-is not detrimental to your health, and that incorporating coffee into your diet could have health benefits. We will have to stay tuned to learn more about the findings of this study. In the meantime, I m going to enjoy a pot, I mean, a cup of coffee! 8 Please mark your calendars for another health benefit that will be happening again very soon. Faithfully Fit exercise classes will begin on Monday, September 11th. We meet every Monday and Thursday mornings in the McCabe Great Hall from 10:00-11:00 for fun, fellowship and fitness. Out motto is, Come as you are, do as you can. More information will follow in the September Newsletter. Put on the sunscreen, make a pitcher of lemonade, and enjoy the rest of our warm sunny days! God bless, Nurse Jane P.S. Without coffee I d have no personality at all!! A Small Part? There are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, I don t need you! And the head cannot say to the feet, I don t need you! On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable. - 1 Corinthians 12:20-22 (NIV) Upper Room Devotional: I work on an assembly line making car mirrors. When building my designated part at my station, I sometimes get frustrated at how insignificant my role seems. But then I remind myself that if I don t do my job right and time my work well with the people on either side of me, then the whole process can fail. I also have to acknowledge that mirrors serve an important purpose for drivers. In our Christian service, we may also devalue our role. But, for example, helping people feel welcome in church can influence them for God in ways we may never fully understand. God can express love and care in myriad of ways, but we are God s hands and feet in the world. One of the privileges of being members of the body of Christ is ministering to one another and to those outside the church. Though we may not see the end results of our small tasks, God sees how our small part in the body of Christ helps further the gospel in the lives of those around us and in the world. -by Keith Osmun (Ohio, USA) Thought for the Day: God can help me use every skill I have to serve others. Prayer: Dear God, thank you for allowing us to be part of such a diverse body and empowering us to serve. Amen. How/where are you serving? Don t know what your gifts are? Don t know where to use your gifts? Contact McCabe s Serving Ministries Coordinator, Jan Joersz, or jjoersz@mccabeumc.com
