God is stirring and moving at McCabe! Things are happening! Some of it is visible. Some of it is below the surface at the moment. Children s Ministry: In the next few weeks, McCabe s weekly children s ministries will wind down. Even as this takes place, things will be ramping up for Vacation Bible School in June. Families with Youth Age Kids (and anyone interested): McCabe is in the process of transitioning Youth Ministry from a half time Director led ministry to a Youth Ministry led by a team of faithful volunteers. McCabe has been invited to be one of ten United Methodist Churches in North and South Dakota to participate in a Youth Cohort led by a person from Youth Ministry Architects out of Texas. We are in the process of developing a team to help lead this vital ministry. We re also looking forward to meeting with families with children and youth in, and around, the age of youth group students. We re meeting on May 9 at 6 p.m. to begin dreaming and planning for Fall, Anyone interested is welcome. Board of Directors: Beginning in April we started using the term Board of Directors to describe the lead discipleship and administrative body of McCabe. This group has the overall privilege and responsibility to lead McCabe into the future. On May 6, at the 9:30 a.m. worship service, these individuals will be commissioned to service in their leadership roles. 1 st Quarter Statements: In the next few weeks, McCabe will be sending out 1 st quarter giving statements. Included with these statements are a few ways your investments have worked through McCabe, to make a difference for the Kingdom of God. Thank you for your financial faithfulness. Open Door: You may have heard that Open Door Preschool and McCabe have been faithfully exploring the possibility of Open Door moving to McCabe. Open Door provides a positive, Christian ministry for the community. Basing this ministry out of McCabe would reduce Open Door s costs to operate, while opening new doors for relationship building for McCabe. If this move does happen, Open Door will need to be a financially self-sustaining ministry. (Continued on page 2)
2 Continued from front page. Be a part of our Worship Team this summer! Positions include: Instrumentalists, vocalists, sound/tech and planning Contact: Alex Cleary at or clearya@csp.edu Budget Updates: I continue to be privileged to discuss the 2018 budget with a variety of people. I am being straightforward in these discussions. We are currently operating on a balanced budget for Part of getting to a balanced budget meant no staff raises in 2018 while also eliminating two 20 hour staff positions (Youth Director and Servant Coordinator). Missions: There are many powerful things happening through McCabe. In the upcoming months, I m certain we will be able to take some further steps to reengage, refocus and unleash our service and mission through McCabe. It is important for local congregations to have a signature mission ministry in the community. If we think about who we are to someone outside McCabe, we are likely best known for strong music with our choir, special music, organ, etc. Missionwise, we do a fair amount with Solar Ovens (International). Locally, we do great things missionally. Even so, I m not sure what our signature missional ministry in the community might be. (It should be something that 75-90% of people coming through McCabe would be able to articulate.) Reengaging a mission group will allow us to focus and refocus on how we live out this part of our ministry together. Contemporary Worship: Derrick Mitchell has been faithfully leading McCabe s Contemporary Worship for the past couple years. In May, Derrick will be stepping away from the Contemporary Worship Leader role so he can focus on supporting other ministries through McCabe. For the summer, Alex Cleary will be leading this worship. Alex is a Contemporary Worship Leader at Concordia St. Paul University. During the summer, contemporary worship service will be held in the sanctuary at 11:00 a.m. Communications: We re chipping away at building some additional communication infrastructure. We re VERY early in the process of developing a web/social media design/redesign. We have servants willing to be liaisons with the Bismarck Tribune and the radio stations (PSA s) so we can share things with the broader community. We are continually thinking about how we present McCabe and what s going on through McCabe events to the broader community. Rebranding: We ve had a small team working on doing a redesign of our First Time Visitor Information. I m excited and hopeful about their work. They re playing with the theme of Come as you are. As we ve been playing with the idea of Come as you are, we ve also been playing with Come. Seek. Go. Come as you are Come broken, hurting, celebrating, in need of forgiveness, in need of hope or healing or with something to offer, etc. Seek Seek Jesus, hope, healing, forgiveness, belonging, community, service, etc. Go Go into the world changed and ready to make a difference. While we re not formally going through a rebranding process, we are thinking about who we are and, as followers of Jesus, what our message is. This has implications as we update our website and get intentional about our social media and app development, etc. Celebrate Recovery: God is stirring in our midst through McCabe s Celebrate Recovery ministry. CR worship numbers have been gradually edging upward. We have 3-5 small groups that meet after worship each Saturday and after the opening of worship 10 children leave and go into a CR based small group for kids. Greeters: You may have noticed the intentional efforts to build and expand McCabe s Greeting Ministry on Sunday mornings. Christ welcomes each of us. Let s pray for one another as we seek to be faithfully welcoming to every person who walks through the door. We are ambassadors of Jesus whether we have a name tag on or not. McCabe: I ve gradually been generating a sample of something happening through McCabe on a weekly basis. The information in this newsletter message might be considered a sample of what this McCabe update will look like. If you d like to receive an ed copy each week, please let Joy know and we ll add your address to the list. My door is open so stop by, call, text, or . I d love to visit at the church, at a coffee shop whenever and wherever works best for you. In service with you, Mark Ehrmantraut 2
3 Pastor Jenny's Ponderings: The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss! As we look ahead to worship for the end of the school year and the beginning of summer, Pastor Mark and I are excited to be offering a sermon and worship series that will be challenging and FUN! For the months of May and June, our sermon series will be The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss: Life Is Messy. (Isn't it, though?!) Now, of course, when we worship in a Christian church, we seek to explore our faith through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but, for 8 weeks, Dr. Seuss will be providing us with a particular lens through which we'll consider our Christian faith and life life that is so often messy and complex! Here are the Dr. Seuss (or Seussaffiliated) stories we'll be exploring during this series...and, at this point, we'll leave it to you to wonder what the faith themes for each book will be! May 5 & 6 - The Cat in the Hat May 12 & 13 - Are You My Mother? May 19 & 20 - Oh, the Places You'll Go! May 26 & 27 - The Grinch June 2 & 3 - Green Eggs & Ham June 9 & 10 - The Sneetches June 16 & 17 - Hop on Pop June 23 & 24 - The Zax & What Was I Scared Of? As I close this introduction to our May- June sermon series, I would be remiss if I didn't offer my gratitude to our McCabe Family Ministries Director, Tina Mitchell, for finding some children's curriculum that offered guidance and inspiration for this series...curriculum that, incidentally, was written by a United Methodist clergywoman from Illinois. Thank you, Tina! And, to all of you reading, I hope to see you in worship this May and June as Dr. Seuss helps us explore the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a fun and challenging way Peace in Christ, Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck Orr *P.S. - The included image was found on Pinterest. Maternity Leave Note From Pastor Jenny Hello, McCabe! By this point, it seems most of you are aware that my family is eagerly anticipating the arrival of our newest member. At the point of my writing this note (April 17), I'm 30 weeks pregnant with a June 24 due date. After discussing maternity leave options with Pastor Mark and our Board of Directors (formerly Leadership Team ), I requested a 12-week leave; 10 of those weeks will be paid maternity leave and 2 of those weeks will be paid vacation. (The duration and scope of this leave is in accordance with our United Methodist Book of Discipline.) Though we certainly hope and plan to worship with you on occasion during my maternity leave, I will not be available for pastoral tasks in the midst of it. My family and I are beyond grateful to know I can take this time of leave as we welcome little Miles Oliver Orr into the world and into our lives! It is my hope to start my leave the moment I go into labor, but we'll see what happens as the due date gets closer... Your love and prayers are welcome and appreciated. - Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck Orr Celebrate Recovery A reminder to all of you... Celebrate Recovery is a twelve-step program open to all with hurts, habits and hang-ups. The program requires anonymity to have a safe space to share. Everyone is welcomed regardless of gender, social status, sexual orientation, race, religion (or not). No one is judged or criticized or advised to do this or that. We are open to McCabe United Methodist Church members and non-members. Our attendance generally runs between 35 and 40 people. One of our leaders, Tony, has been leading a CR group at the State Penitentiary since we started a meeting at McCabe. The members have named themselves Celebrate Recovery on the Inside. Generally, their attendance is around 12 people. Tony is assisted with the meetings by one of the members who helps with scripture readings and the sermons. Within the past several weeks, Karlee Chase has started the youth program. We are very pleased that we can offer this program to the 13 kids who attend the program. We are hoping that we will be able offer two groups soon so there will be separate groups for younger and older kids. Currently, we are looking for some volunteers to help with the youth program. No training is required, but we would need to do a background check. We need the volunteers to be present in 3 the room to help guide the kids. If you are interested and willing, please contact Chris Chase at Thank you to the 70 people who have signed up to pray for Celebrate Recovery. Our goal is to have 100 people praying for Celebrate Recovery. We feel grateful that we already have 70 people praying for us and hope that more people will sign up on the lists that are located at both Welcome Centers.
4 Is it spring yet??? Nope! But I have to believe it s coming. We are off to a great start with the Focus meeting we had at Washburn UMC on April 14. The meeting was very informative and seeing friends again that we hadn t seen for awhile was so much fun. We reviewed the following: Selling more love ribbons The Legacy Fund Mission U to be held in Jamestown in July Assembly to be held in Columbus, OH on May Our theme this year is Sacred Spaces. This is to remind us to find a special place where you can bond, worship and or talk to Jesus in your daily life. Upcoming events: Executive meeting, May 10 at 10:30 a.m. Spring Banquet, May 21 at 6:00 p.m. in McCabe s Great Hall. Please plan to attend and bring a friend! Circles, May 17; Esther: 9:30 a.m., Mary-Ruth: 1:30 p.m.; Eve: 6:30 p.m. Salad Luncheon, June 6 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. It was so special to see Al Ehrmantraut back with us at Circle and Executive meeting in April. Thank you, Lord! It was decided to keep the 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. circles meeting separately at this time. I would like to remind you all to keep reading as reports are due in August. We have excellent books in the church library. I recently found a verse that describes exactly what circles are about and what they stand for. Don t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant. -Robert Louis Stevenson Ladies, we plant seeds...in our missions. These seeds are planted in missions abroad, in the states, in Bismarck and in our own church. We all plant seeds! 5 Children & Family Ministries Children s Sunday Morning Discipleship Program What s Happening? Wow! It s hard to believe it s the end of another school year! It has been an honor and privilege to spend time with McCabe s littlest disciples. We ve spent the last several months working our way through key stories in the Old Testament. This month, we jump into the New Testament with lessons on John the Baptist, Nicodemus, the disciples, and Pentecost. Our key verse for May is John 3:16, For this is how God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. Plan on joining us on Mother s Day - Preschool-2nd grade kids will be singing during worship and we ll have a fun VBS skit as well. Last day of J.A.M. is May 20 - dress for games! Thank you J.A.M. May ONE Thing: 2018 Miracle Offering The theme of the 2018 Annual Conference session taking place June 7-9 in Sioux Fallx, SD is Discover Joy: Live Deeply. You are invited to discover the joy of generosity and faithfulness by participating in our Called: One Word, Many Ways Miracle Offering in two ways. First: You and the members of McCabe are invited to live deeply by making a commitment to pray, bless and partner with the conference in helping others hear and respond to God s call to their next step of faith and spiritual leadership. This commitment includes bringing their names to annual conference to lay on the altar that we might ALL surround them in prayer and for God s Spirit to move and break through. The goal is to have 1,000 names to be lifted up from our churches and communities. Second: You are invited to experience joyful giving through a financial gift to the Culture of Call Grant fund. These grants will serve as seed money for churches, groups and organizations to create opportunities for faithful discernment and courageous response. The goal is to have $100,000 to support these 7 1 groups and organizations in creating opportunities to inspire and equip individuals to hear and respond to God s calling. Imagine over 1,000 persons being lifted in prayer Imagine how the Holy Spirit will flood their lives Imagine how God will be honored. -Bishop Bruce Ough ONE THING

9 Prayer Corner May 20 is Pentecost Sunday. It is the day we celebrate the birth of the Church 2,000 years ago. On that day the believers were gathered together in prayer. The Apostle Paul often prayed for the Church in the letters he wrote. I pray that from His glorious riches He would grant you to be strengthened in your inner being with power through the Holy Spirit, so that Christ Jesus may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have the strength to grasp with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to The Banquet What is it and how much are the tickets...and where do we go? This is a different banquet than most of us are used to. You need the heart of a disciple, and the willingness to share part of your afternoon and evening ministering to the needs of others. The Banquet is an evening meal that is provided at Trinity Lutheran Church each Thursday for those in the Bismarck Mandan area who need a meal and may be lonely and in need of some companionship. McCabe will be providing the meal on May 10. This marks the 17 th time that we have done this! This involves planning of the meal, purchasing know the love of Jesus which surpasses knowledge, so you may be filled with the fullness of God To God be all the glory. In the name of Jesus Amen. Let us join in a fellowship of prayer for McCabe. Write a prayer. Do not sign your name. Drop the prayer in the prayer basket in the alcove behind the Welcome Center in the clerestory. Take a prayer from the basket and read it alone or share in prayer at the coffee table. Add your own prayer thoughts. Return the prayer to the prayer basket before the next service. Next week pick up another prayer. and preparing the meal and clean up. The cooks are already in place but in addition we need 8 to come at 4:15 p.m. to set tables, etc. and 18 more to come at 5:00 p.m. to serve and do other jobs that need to be done. WE MUST HAVE 30 VOLUNTEERS BUT NO MORE THAN THAT, SO SIGN UP QUICKLY and be sure to include your phone number so that you can receive a reminder call. All volunteers are asked to stay until the end, approximately 7:30 p.m. Please consider helping and if you are unable to physically help a monetary donation would be greatly appreciated so that we can continue to do this twice a year.
