2 Knight of the Month for July 2017! While there were a few standouts during the month of July, Jeff, as is usually the case, was always on-hand to help his parish, his community, and his brothers. During the month, Jeff worked the entire six days at the St. Mary s Great Fair in various game booths. Jeff assisted at the 7/16 Pancake Breakfast in shopping, doing prep work, serving, cleaning, and transporting items to and from the Council House and St. Mary s Grammar School. He was an advocate of the new 20/20 Mass Project to support the Babies in the Womb Feel Pain initiative. A dedicated Knight, he helped set-up and clean-up after the 7/5 New Officer Installation Ceremony. The list could go on (he attended our Business and Scoial Meeting as well as the Council s Meeting with Life Teen to start working together on various activities) as Jeff has given much of himself. Jeff is truly supported by his adoring wife and 2 wonderful daughters. Thank you to the Kandravy family for sharing your husband/dad with us! We are appreciative of his passion and loyal support to everything the Knights for Columbus stands for! GRAND KNIGHT'S MESSAGE As we head into the new Columbian year, it is my hope that all our Brothers are healthy and doing well. We had a very busy July as we did our part in the 2017 very successful St. Mary s Great Fair. A great turnout of Brothers loaned a helping hand all six evenings whether manning game booths, cooking or working the beer tent. We also joined the 20/20 Mass Project - an effort to ban abortion past 20 weeks (postfertilization) in New Jersey by passing the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act by the year 2020 (A3452/S2026). The Lombardi Council is having a Mass offered every first Tuesday at 8:15 AM at St. Mary s Chapel for a period of one year starting in December 2017 and running through November These Masses will be offered for the protection of Babies in the Womb and their Families. 3 We had our New Officer Installation Ceremony on July 5th where our Worthy Chaplain, Fr. Rick, celebrated Holy Mass and our Worthy District Deputy, William Horton, presided over the ceremony. Everyone enjoyed a spread from Taliercio s afterwards and shared some laughs. We held a meeting with Life Teen representatives and discussed doing some joint ventures (especially cohosting a Christmas Dinner/Gift Auction on December 9th at St. Mary s). Bob Castner and John Gillis did a great job manning the grill for Life Teen s Farewell to Drew BBQ (their ministry leader, Drew Pillar retired) on July 30th. We did two ARC Drive Collections (one at Stop and Shop on Jul 15th and one at Best Market on July 22nd) that were successful thanks to all the Brothers that came out under the leadership of our Community Director, Bob Castner, our Council Director, John Brandon and Robert Lauricella. We also sponsored a very successful Pancake Breakfast on July 16th to support one of our Seminarians here at St. Mary s, Christopher Ziegler, who is entering his first year at Mount St. Mary s Seminary down in Maryland. Looking ahead, August and September will be just as busy. We still meet every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Council House at 872 Leonardville Road in Leonardo. I hope to see many of you decide to come out to one of our meetings and perhaps join us for one of our events. I am proud to serve as your Grand Knight Vivat Jesus! Colin Casey OUR CHAPLAIN S MESSAGE Dear Brother Knights, This is my first time writing to you as your chaplain. It is a joy to be with you in this capacity and I ask that you all pray for me that I may fulfil this role in the best way. This month of August, Page 3 of 16
4 we are reminded of the maternal love for us of the Blessed Virgin Mary. August 15h is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin and we are reminded that our hope is in being with God for all eternity. Our Lady s Assumption was the fruit of her holy and immaculate life. May we, as Disciples of Christ and Knights of Columbus, learn to say yes with our whole life like Our Lady did before us. 5 CATHOLIC CITIZENSHIP ESSAY CONTEST The Order encourages all councils and assemblies to sponsor the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest at schools in their communities. The essay contest is a creative way to encourage young people to become citizens who are firmly grounded in the Faith. The Order has expanded the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest to all Catholic students in public, private or parochial schools in grades 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 during the current school year. The contest has also been expanded to go through the different levels of competition to the international level. The theme of the essay contest is Going to the Peripheries. The contest opens the doors of young minds, enabling the entrants to be creative, thoughtful and introspective in their work. "Through the Incarnation the Lord has united himself forever with suffering humanitynot as an abstraction but throughout history with each suffering person. Jesus is already at the peripheries. The question for us is whether He will be there alone or whether His disciples will be there with Him."ã -Supreme Knight Carl Anderson Page 5 of 16
6 Discuss the role of the Catholic Church going to the peripheries, then select one of the following ideas to complete your essay: a) Describe the work of one widely known current Catholic who went to the periphery. b) Describe the work of one widely known historical Catholic who went to the periphery. c) Describe the work of one person in your life, who helps alleviate human suffering. CALLING ALL BROTHERS TO THE ADORATION CHAPEL Brothers, we are looking for members to volunteer one hour on Mondays between the hour of 2:00 AM - 3:00 AM at the Adoration Chapel at St. Mary, Mother of God Church. The Lombardi Council is responsible for that one-hour time slot on Mondays and, unfortunately, we just had a member receive a shift change at his job and we need at least one more member to help. CHRISTMAS POSTER CONTEST For many in society Christmas has become for many - especially children - a secular holiday. To combat this, the Knights of Columbus has introduced the Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest. This program - similar to the Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest - will allow young people to engage their creative talents and imaginations while understanding the true, spiritual meaning of Christmas. Entries in the Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas Poster contest must include a slogan reflecting the topic and an original visual image. ELIGIBILITY The Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest is open to all Page 13 of 16
14 young people between the ages of 5 and 14. Contest entrants compete in one of three levels: Kindergarten through 2nd Grade 3rd through 5th Grade 6th through 8th Grads Contest Levels The winning Council level poster will be sent on to the District Level.
