The Adult Bible Study meets at A Word from the Pastor Growing up Baptist, I never understood why my Catholic friends found religious significance in wearing dirt on their faces for Lent. For that matter, I never understood the idea of Lent. (Was it another Hallmark occasion, a gimmick for Long John Silvers, or some religious tradition we Baptists just didn t put much stock in?) My Catholic friends struggled to articulate the meaning behind their ritual of giving up chocolate when I asked them to explain it s significance. It was an important religious occasion to them! I marveled at their commitment to this sacred practice, but I felt...well left out of something important, something holy and sacred. I ve since learned that the Lenten season is a time for deep personal introspection - and reflection on our journey as disciples of Jesus Christ. Regardless of faith tradition, these days from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday morning offer an opportunity to be intentionally introspective and reflective of our relationship with Jesus Christ. For many, it evokes a deeper consciousness of our call to real discipleship. Rather than choosing what to give up for Lent, I ve chosen to add in something that will cause me to reflect with gratitude on my heroes of faith, and write 40 letters (one for each day of the Lenten season) to people who have made a profound impact on my life. It is my way of choosing thanksgiving and expressing my gratitude for the affirmation, encouragement, and inspiration I ve received from those

This means being intentional about setting aside time each day to reflect on the times God made God s self known to me through my Christian brothers and sisters. Additionally, I will seek to honor their spiritual care and nurture of me in my care and ministry of presence to others. After all, it is in ministering to each other that we encounter the Spirit of the Divine in each other. As we approach Ash Wednesday and begin our Lenten pilgrimage together as a family of faith, I invite you to spend some time considering what you may add in. What spiritual discipline or habit will you choose to make a part of your life? What adjustments do you need to make in your thinking, your attitude about others, your priorities? Ash Wednesday is just two weeks away. Our doors will open at 6:00 p.m. on March 6 for our Ash Wednesday service, and I hope you ll be here as we begin our journey toward the cross.
