2 TODAY Welcome to all who are worshipping with us especially if you are visiting Napier or at the Cathedral for the first time you are invited to join us for morning tea (or coffee!) served at the back of the cathedral following the 10am service. Te Pouhere Sunday Today is Te Pouhere Sunday, Constitution Sunday, the day on which we celebrate and reflect on the life of our Three Tikanga Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand & Polynesia. The day is appropriately set following both Pentecost Day which we sometimes talk of as being the birth of the Church, and Trinity Sunday which speaks to us of the nature of God who exists as a complex community of persons. The opening comments from Bishop Ross Bay s sermon preached at St James, Kerikeri on Te Pouhere Sunday 6th June Environment-Justice-Peace Network Because of the coming Queen s Birthday holiday weekend EJP Network will meet on Sunday 12 June at 3.00 pm. Members have been involved in some useful activities recently: Hosting over 40 people to meet with West Papuan Human Rights leader Socrates Yoman - from Catholic Anglican & Methodist parishes, Amnesty International and the Waka. Putting together a motion for Regional Conference and Synod re Parish Environmental Audits. Individuals have made submissions on City and Regional Council plans. We were well represented at a Refugee Planning meeting in May. Planning has begun for the 31 st July combined Ahuriri Anglicans service, for our interfaith Week of Prayer for World Peace in October and also for Peace Month (November) celebrating alternatives to violence in Napier city. You are welcome to come and join us! 3 Today s Readings from the New Revised Standard Version Bible Sentence: There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3: 28 Collect: God of the southern sea and of these islands, God of Norfolk pine and lofty Totara, God of spindle and sail, You brought us to this land of plenty and bound us here in sacred trust. Make us worthy of our covenant with You: Create in us a deeper belonging by Your grace, that we may partner Your ways together and serve Your purpose in each other. In the name of Christ our dolphin guide. Amen. Isaiah 42: Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the end of the earth! Let the sea roar and all that fills it, the coastlands and their inhabitants. 11 Let the desert and its towns lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar inhabits; let the inhabitants of Sela sing for joy, let them shout from the tops of the mountains. 12 Let them give glory to the Lord, and declare his praise in the coastlands. 13 The Lord goes forth like a soldier, like a warrior he stirs up his fury; he cries out, he shouts aloud, he shows himself mighty against his foes. 14 For a long time I have held my peace, I have kept still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labour, I will gasp and pant. 15 I will lay waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbage; I will turn the rivers into islands, and dry up the pools. 16 I will lead the blind by a road they do not know, by paths they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do, and I will not forsake them. 17 They shall be turned back and utterly put to shame those who trust in carved images, who say to cast images, You are our gods. 18 Listen, you that are deaf; and you that are blind, look up and see! 19 Who is blind but my servant, or deaf like my messenger whom I send? Who is blind like my dedicated one, or blind like the servant of the Lord? 20 He sees many things, but does not observe them; his ears are open, but he does not hear. 2 Corinthians 5: For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. 15 And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. 17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 18 All this is 3
4 from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. John 15: As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. 11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. ROSTERS for June / July / August have been ed to those whose address we have on file; printed copies available from the Office. If you are not available for your rostered duty, please arrange a swap and advise Margaret in the Office. Thanks. Operation Refugee Challenge Anglican Missions would like to encourage you to support a new Christian World Service initiative. Operation Refugee gives you a chance to give some help to refugees. The challenge is to live on the same rations as a Syrian refugee during Refugee Week, June, and raise as much money as you can. You are supplied with the rations and you sign up family and friends as sponsors. The rations are based on what a Syrian refugee receives living in a Lebanese refugee camp - just a small amount of rice, split peas, salt, fish, flour and oil. CWS is wanting 90 people to register and do the Challenge with them. Their goal is to raise $55,000 to support refugees living in Lebanon and Jordan. Operation Refugee is a practical way to keep hope alive for families who want a better future. The website that has all the details including registration is 4
5 From the Anglican Taonga Web-site Contemporary hymn publisher, the New Zealand Hymnbook Trust (NZHBT) has appointed Waiapu Cathedral Director of Music, James Mist as its new manager. Before joining Waiapu Cathedral in Napier, James Mist was Music Coordinator for St Matthew's Church in Hastings, and had worked as director of music at St Michael and All Angels Church in Kelburn, Wellington. Alongside his experience in church music, Mr Mist has held a number of advisory and managerial positions in the public service, and holds postgraduate qualifications in management and commerce from Victoria U n i v e r s i t y and Hawke s Bay s Eastern Institute of Technology. "James is passionate about hymn writing and engaging Christians and worship leaders with hymnody." said New Zealand Hymn Book Trust Chair, David Bush at the time of the appointment. "His skills in both music and management will serve the Trust well into the future. "Hymnody has been there in every generation and every age, evolving with time as new hymns are added to the repertoire," said James, "The exciting challenge today is how to involve Christians in developing hymnody for the digital age." The New Zealand Hymnbook Trust was founded in 1978 by Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian Churches and the Associated Churches of Christ. Since then it has pioneered the publication of New Zealand hymns and songs, including well-known hymnals Allelulia A o t e a - roa, and Carol our Christmas whose songs are sung across many d e n o m i n a - tions in Aotearoa and beyond. Well-known h y m n w r i t - ers Colin Gibs o n a n d Shirley Murray are published by the NZHBT, which also features Anglican hymn writers such as Ian Render (Waiapu) and Marnie Barrell (Christchurch). As they handed on the role, the New Zealand Hymnbook Trust acknowledged the contribution of retiring NZHBT managers, John and Gillian Thornley and thanked them for their many years of dedicated service to the Trust. 5

7 FROM THE WAIAPU MINISTRY EDUCATOR New Contact Group Poster A key element in our Diocesan processes for dealing with concerns about inappropriate behaviour by ministers (both lay and ordained) and for supporting all those involved is the group of Diocesan contact people. It is they who are the first point of approach by anyone who might have experienced unprofessional behaviour. These contact people female and male, lay and clergy are located in each of the three regions of Waiapu. Their names and contact details are noted on a poster which is updated regularly - the latest poster is displayed on the Cathedral notice-board.
