1 St Joseph s School Newsletter October 18, 2017 Upcoming Dates Kia Ora Whanau and welcome back to what will be another exciting term! Im sure as the warmer weather kicks in students will enjoy getting outside more and competing in different house events, sports tournaments and of course EOTC adventures. (I m sure they also look forward to reading their end of year reports and completing school testing). Class Placements 2018 Thank you to families who have already advised us of their intentions for next year. It is so important we get the most accurate numbers when creating classes. This is never an easy job in a school our size as each year group differs in size and ability. At this stage, the structure of the school is likely to be similar to this year, with Years 0-2 making up the Junior area, Years 3-4 making up the Middles, Years 5-6 in the Seniors and Years 7-8 Intermediates. These names may change to be more modern and relevant to our school community so watch this space! We are still in the process of confirming the year levels of the teachers and employing new staff. As soon as we have confirmed these we begin placing students in classes. Staff make every effort to ensure classes are well balanced with gender and ability mixes, as well as ensuring students are placed with others who they work well with. It is worth noting they do not always work to their full potential alongside their best friends! We take into account student s academic and social needs. Our ultimate aim is to place students in classes where they can be catered for most effectively and in which they will be happy and well matched to the strengths of the teacher. I acknowledge that parents sometimes have information about their child we may not be aware of that can make their class placement more effective or appropriate. For that reason, a class placement sheet was sent home this week. (The cut off for returning these is Friday 27 October). Please note that there are a range of factors to consider in this process and therefore I cannot guarantee to accommodate all requests, rather we consider them alongside other factors. 2 Religious Education Corner: Welcome back to Term 4: As it is the month of the Holy Rosary - we start the term by reflecting on Mary and her life-long devotion to her son. The Holy Rosary is a cycle of the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Luminous Mysteries which makes the Rosary not only "a breviary or summary of the Gospel and of Christian life,"(ingravescentibus malis) but also a compendium of the Liturgical Year. For those Students participating in the Sacramental Programme: Please find the dates for First Holy Communion. Please note there has been a change of date for the second meeting which will now be the 1st November at 7.30pm. If this affects you, please update your diaries. In you is presaged all the sacraments and through you they came into being. Holy Mary, may we stand with you at the cross. Always. Reflection for the week: Every ending is also a beginning. We reflect on the beginning and endings and new beginnings in our own lives everyday. Let them speak to us of Mary who journeyed next to her son. 3 New Zealand Junior Rugby Tournament D 2017 Term Dates Ben, Seth, Maddox and Ben recently travelled to Taupo as part of the Under 13 Rams Representative Team to take part in the New Zealand Junior Rugby Tournament. Well done boys. Term 1 Term 2 Term 3 Term 4 1 Feb 13 April 1 May 7 July 24 July 29 Sept 16 Oct 15 Dec Scholastic Books First Holy Communion First Holy Communion preparation starts this Friday night at 5.30pm with a Pot Luck Dinner in the Church foyer. Please bring with you food that you would normally have on a Friday to share with everyone else. This is a very important get together and your attendance is required should you wish your child to celebrate First Holy Communion. We look forward to seeing you all there. Scholastic book pamphlets will be given out this week. These are due back at school by Wednesday 1st November. Please make sure that your child s name and room number are on the order form and envelope and given to the office. Orders can be completed and paid for online through the LOOP app or mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz. They can also be paid for by cheque made out to Scholastic NZ or eftpos at the school office.
