AA69 - Shirley Murray tune: Westminster Abbey [CP207] Welcome: NZPB page: 404 NZPB page: 405 NZPB page: Rev d Margaret Thompson The Gathering of the Community Gloria Confession / Forgiveness / Absolution 3

4 Sentence: Collect: Where two or three are gathered in my name, says the Lord, I am there among them. Matthew 18: 20 Gracious God, when two or three are gathered in your name you are there. Be present with your family, the church. Give us grace and maturity when we are in conflict. Help us to listen, to forgive and to live together in mutual love. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen Reading: Ezekiel 33: 8-11 Keith James Choir: Psalm 119: Choir: All: 1 - Choir: They are happy whose life is blameless, who follow God s law! They are happy who do God s will, seeking God with all their hearts. They are happy who follow God s law. They are happy who follow God s law. 3 - Choir: Bless your servant and I shall live and obey your word. Open my eyes that I may see the wonders of your law. 2 - Choir: You have laid down your precepts to be obeyed with care. May my footsteps be firm to obey your statutes. 4 - Choir: Teach me the demands of your statutes and I will keep them to the end. Train me to observe your law, to keep it with my heart. Reading: Romans 13: 8-14 Robin Gwynn Gradual Hymn: O God beyond all praising tune: Thaxted [CP355] 1 O God beyond all praising, we worship you today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay; for we can only wonder at every gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end: we lift our hearts before you and wait upon your word, we honour and adore you, our great and mighty Lord. 4

5 2 Then hear, O gracious Saviour, accept the love we bring, that we who know your favour may serve you as our king; and whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill, we ll triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still: to marvel at your beauty and glory in your ways, and make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise. SG 53 Words: Michael Perry Gospel Reading: Matthew 18: Rev d Margaret Thompson The Sermon: Rev d Margaret Thompson Affirmation Hymn: 1 We believe in God the Father, God Almighty, by whose plan earth and heaven sprang to being, all created things began. We believe in Christ the Saviour, Son of God in human frame, virgin-born, the child of Mary upon whom the Spirit came. We believe in God the Father 2 Christ, who on the cross forsaken, like a lamb to slaughter led, suffered under Pontius Pilate, he descended to the dead. We believe in Jesus risen, heaven s king to rule and reign, to the Father s side ascended till as judge he comes again. 3 We believe in God the Spirit; in one church, below, above; saints of God in one communion, one in holiness and love. So by faith, our sins forgiven, Christ our Saviour, Lord and Friend, we shall rise with him in glory to the life that knows no end. CP363 - [tune: WOV92] Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith from the Apostles Creed Tune: Hymn to Joy - Beethoven NZPB page: The Prayers of the People Rev d Jon Williams NZPB page: 419 The Peace Rev d Margaret Thompson 5

During the next hymn the bread and wine, symbols of Christ s life, are brought to the altar; our offerings of money that support the mission and ministry of the Cathedral are collected and brought forward also. Offertory Hymn: Maker of mystery 1 Maker of mystery, dreamer of what will be, well-spring and fertile ground of all our growing: tending the buried seed, Fore seeing every need, you draw us into life beyond our knowing. 2 Christ, strong and living vine, spreading through space and time, deep rooted in the love of God our mother: dying, you live and share your strength with us, to bear ripe fruit in season for the life of others. 3 Wild Spirit, springing green, coiled in the depths unseen, promise of fruit within the seed maturing: new life, you grow and swell, burst from the outgrown shell, hundredfold yield in every age ensuring. 4 Living and loving God, sing in the pulse of our blood, help us to know you in your own creation, love you, the life of all, serve you and hear your call from our first forming to our full salvation. Into the valley sweep, bringing dry bones to life, wakening each from sleep: speak to the church your firm command, and bid a scattered army stand. 4 Spirit of Christ our Lord, send us to do your will; nothing need hold us back for you are with us still: forgetful of ourselves, may we receive your gift of unity! 9 Cathedral Guides / Hosts The new summer tourist season will begin on the 9 th October with arrival of the season s first cruise ship. Would previous guides please confirm your availability; and anyone who would like to join the ministry, or find out more about what is involved, please contact Ian Granger phone (06) or skipg@xtra.co.nz Easter Sunday Trading Parishioners are invited to sign a petition at the back of the Cathedral. It asks the Napier City Council to reconsider the matter and, this time, hold a fairer hearing. The petition is needed because Council s earlier decision was made after a process so flawed that it failed even to advise the city s churches that it intended to debate the issue. Cook up for the Poor & Homeless next Monday 18 th September The Swannell s feed up to 80 on a Monday, and 20 or so midweek. Would you like to help? Other City churches are taking part. Here are some ways... we have some veges ready in our Cathedral community Garden; provide more produce for the cook-up; help us plan a simple meal; help prepare food next Monday afternoon (18 th Sept) - we have the use of Asher Hall kitchen at St Paul s Church. If you are a Starter, please sign-up on the list at the back of the church today; or talk to Jon Williams, phone Te Pihopatanga to elect new leader The stage has been set for the election of a new leader for Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa, the Maori Anglican Church. The 2017 session of Te Runanganui the biennial synod of the Maori Church will convene at Whakatu Marae in Nelson on the late afternoon of Thursday, 7 th September, and run through until next Sunday afternoon, 10 th September. By far the weightiest task before its 130 members is the nomination of a successor to the late Archbishop Brown Turei as Pihopa o Aotearoa, or Bishop of Aotearoa. Te Runanganui will spend the first half of its time as an electoral college, and Archbishops Philip Richardson and Winston Halapua have appointed Archbishop-emeritus John Paterson who has a long connection with Te Pihopatanga and is a fluent te reo speaker as commissary, or overseer, for that college. Archbishop John will deliver his charge to the college, during the kauhau, or sermon, at Thursday evening s karakia, and he s expected to reflect on the responsibilities of Te Pihopa o Aotearoa, and on the hopes and dreams invested in that office. The college s legal adviser will then outline the process to be followed during the electoral college and Archbishop John will then invite the five Maori bishops to present their vision statements for each of their Hui Amorangi. Archbishop John has asked that Anglicans uphold the election in their prayers. Thursday s powhiri and evening karakia will be held at Whakatu Marae. The remaining sessions of the college, and the later business sessions of Te Runanganui, will be held in Nelson s Trafalgar Events Centre. 9
