4 Pastor s Letter October 18/19 In the Image of God Dear Parish Family, One of the great values upheld by Christianity is privacy, or more accurately, private property. The idea that things can belong to us is fundamental to our responsibility and care for them. I am able to own things and therefore care for them and protect them. We own our homes and cars and all sorts of things and in that ownership we have responsibility for them. I am also the owner of my own body and less tangible things like my time, my energy, and my attention. This kind of stewardship, when used well, can lead to a community in which our blessings serve ourselves and others. There is also, of course, a dark side to ownership. We can own things in an irresponsible or selfish way. I can fail to take care of myself. I can own a beautiful home but never welcome others there. There is an important distinction between owning things for the sake of ownership and owning them to use them for a higher purpose. It is this kind of ownership that Jesus is getting at when in today s Gospel. The Pharisees ask him about the payment of taxes. They are trying to set a trap for Jesus and catch him in a bind between civil and religious responsibility. Jesus asks them about the coins they own. Whose image is on it? he asks. The sharper listeners probably already realized what Jesus was up to. In the world of Jesus, image was a special word. No one would hear it without thinking of the Book of Genesis. Whose image is on the coin? Jesus asks. Then that s who owns the coin. The next question is only implied in the Gospel passage. Whose image is on you? Then that is who owns you. The point of this Gospel is clearly not about having some responsibility to government and some to church like paying taxes and giving to the collection. The point is that everything and everyone belongs to God including Caesar! There is no doubt that it is good for people own things. In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that we own them only because of God s goodness. We are accountable to God for how we use the blessings of this world, including ourselves. I think it is hard for people today to think about this. We live with such a strong sense of privacy, independence, and autonomy that thinking of responsibilities to God can seem somehow less than real. Our most personal commitments give a clue to this. Children surely have a claim on the personhood of their parents. Friends and partners in love and commitment belong to each other and are responsible to each other in a very deep way. Jesus invites his disciples and the Pharisees who tried to trick him to recognize their belonging to God, in whose image they are created. Belonging to God means that we also belong to each other. We are called to live out of a deeper sense of responsibility and care for each other. After all we all are children of the one God, in whose image we all are made. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

7 Do Your Want to Become a Catholic? RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Weekly meetings to discuss the Catholic faith beginning with an inquiry phase to answer questions and explore some of the teachings of the Church. Becoming a Catholic is not a class, but rather a process. We are all on a faith journey throughout our lives we recognize that every path is different!! Those needing to complete the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist are invited to attend. If you are interested, please call the Parish Office at Ext. 0 Grief: Coping with reminders after a loss :: A 6-week Bereavement Group Grief doesn t magically end at a certain point after a loved one s death. Reminders often bring back the pain of loss. Here s help coping and healing. When a loved one dies, you might be faced with grief over your loss again and again sometimes even years later. Feelings of grief might return on the anniversary of your loved one s death, birthday or other special days throughout the year. These feelings, sometimes called an anniversary reaction, aren t necessarily a setback in the grieving process. They re a reflection that your loved one s life was important to you. To continue on the path toward healing, know what to expect and how to cope with reminders of loss, a 6 week Bereavement Group will be starting at the Basilica of Sacred Hearts with Deacon Carl Sanfilippo. Anyone interested please call the parish office at Ext 0. RELIGIOUS AWARDS FOR CATHOLIC GIRL and BOY SCOUTS A Scout is reverent. A scout is reverent toward God. 8 Dear Parish Family, I am so grateful to all of you who have supported our In Nomine Domini Renewal. The summer months have brought us to a little more than half our goal and we now stand at $817,000. Our participation has gone up as well. We now have over 250 parish families participating! Please join those who have contributed to our campaign. It would be wonderful to complete our campaign by Thanksgiving time and be able to begin work on all of our renewal projects. This will be possible if we all take a role in this renewal. Fr.
