3 From the desk of Father James Well, the rains have returned. It started when I was at Newport and they have continued, but it has been nice. I have been able to have a couple of nice fires in the wood stove. That is the primary way I heat the rectory, I do it mainly for the dogs, but if it is going to be warm, I enjoy the warmth from a wood stove, especially on these chilly wet nights. On October 7, the Church celebrated the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. Saint Pius V established this feast in The purpose was to thank God for the victory of Christians over the Turks at Lepanto a victory attributed to the praying of the rosary. Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in The development of the rosary has a long history. First, a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying 150 Hail Marys. Soon a mystery of Jesus life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary s giving the rosary to Saint Dominic is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of Saint Dominic. Many of you know that I am a convert to the faith. I admit that when I first became Catholic I struggled because I thought to be a good Catholic one HAD to pray the rosary, maybe not every day, but often. I struggled with praying the rosary. It took me a long time to learn how to do it and feel confident in my prayers. In the 21 years that I have been a Catholic, I have seen my appreciation and love of Our Blessed Mother grow, as well as personal devotion of praying the rosary. While I do typically pray the rosary every day, during the months of October and May I make sure that I do pray a rosary everyday. All of you, my parish family here at St. Francis Parish and School, are included in these intentions everyday, if there is a particular intention you would like me to remember during the month of October, please slip me a note and I will be sure to include that specific intention during the remaining October days. I would also challenge each of you to pray the rosary every day during this month honoring Our Lady of the Rosary, especially if you do not already have this practice. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us! Fr. James THE RESULTS ARE IN! In the Spirit of St. Francis To Rob and Lisa Watson who put out the doughnuts and made coffee and Georgine and Dennis Freiburg who helped serve and clean up afterwards and anyone else who helped at the unplanned coffee social last Sunday. In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU! WOMEN OF THE PARISH HAVE SPOKEN AND HERE S WHAT THEY ARE SAYING. THE MAJORITY OF RESPONSES INDICATE THAT WOMEN WOULD LIKE TO GATHER WITH WOMEN IN THEIR SIMILAR AGE GROUPS. SCRIPTURE STUDY TOPPED THE LIST. SO, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? JOIN US IN A GENERAL GATHeRING ON Sunday, November 13, 2016 AT 2:00 pm IN THE PARISH CENTER. TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD IN THE NEXT STAGE OF PLANNING FOR WOMEN S MINISTRY. linda@stfrancissherwood.org

5 Care Ministry From the Depths of Grief and Loss: A Workshop of Understanding As humans we all experience loss but we don t always recognize grief when it comes to us. Sometimes we don t understand how losses have been mounting up for us until we start asking questions like these. I am so sad every day, is this normal? How will I know if it has turned into depression? No one in my life has recently died, so why do I feel like I am grieving? How will I ever find my way through this sadness and confusion? If you have asked yourself such questions, join us at the Northwest Catholic Counseling Center (NCC) for insights, answers, and hope at From the Depths of Grief and Loss. Presented by former NCC staff member, Nancie Potter, JD, LMFT. From the Depths of Grief and Loss Saturday, October 29 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Pre-registration required to reserve your seat. 6 Respect Life Catholic Corner What does the fifth commandment forbid? God s fifth commandment forbids murder, abortion, genocide, infanticide, child abuse, euthanasia, sterilization and suicide, and all that can lead to spiritual or physical harm, whether of oneself or of others, such as anger, fighting, revenge, drunkenness, drug abuse, torments inflicted on body or mind, hatred and bad example. St. Paul Family Catechism, 670 Next Week: What is abortion? Heavenly Father, eternal, changeless, and faithful Lord, we recognize that we are in need of forgiveness as a nation, for turning our hearts away from you. Hear our prayer of repentance Lord and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We praise you for your tender mercies and your compassion that never fails. Lord, it is only by Your grace that we can live lives that are just, and merciful. May Your Holy Spirit enable us to walk humbly in Your presence and may You be pleased to restore America so that a generation not yet born may praise you. In the name of Christ Jesus, who has done great things for us, Amen. ~Prayer from Carmen Pate, Alliance Ministries, 40daysforlife.com Sunday, October 16 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 581 In a world where there is so much wealth, so many resources to feed everyone, it is unfathomable that there are so many hungry children Pope Francis 6

We look forward to seeing you at the Auction on Saturday, October 22 for an evening of "Autumn in New York!" During the month of November, we as a parish are going to remember relatives and friends that have died by displaying pictures of them in the inner Narthex. If you wish to participate in the event, bring a COPY of their picture to Mass and place it the basket in the narthex. We need to have the pictures by Sunday, October 23 so that we can arrange them appropriately. The pictures will NOT be returned to you. The Archdiocese has created an updated summary trifold pamphlet of the USCCB's "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship" teaching document on the political responsibility of Catholics. They are available in the narthex and tables around the entrances to the church. In honor of October being designated as "Respect Life Month" by the USCCB we are asking for concrete suggestions on how our parish can mercifully cherish the gift of all human life. Please see our table in the narthex to write down your suggestions and place in the provided box. We are grateful for your ideas, interest and participation in advancing mercy and a culture of life in our parish!
