3 From the desk of Father James Thus says the LORD: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it. The above quote is the full text from our first reading this weekend from the prophet Isaiah. This text talks about how the rain comes down to water our earth and nourishes the ground to support and produce life. The fruits of the earth spring up, giving us nourishment and life. This is also so true for the Word of God. This word comes to us from the Lord, it is often placed in the hearts of prophets or on their lips. This word goes out to the ends of the earth, nourishing our souls, and with God s grace, inspiring us to act in ways that will bear much fruit. This nourishment that we receive from God s Word and from the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of His Son is so important to our everyday lives. This nourishment helps us to be able to go out into the world, taking this word that we have received, and sharing it with others. Before I entered the seminary, when I lived in downtown Portland, I would often go and visit different churches around the Portland area. There was one parish where the priest would end Mass by saying, having been nourished in Word and Sacrament, let us go forth in peace to love and serve our Lord. These words continue to be with me to this day. Yes, we are nourished in the WORD and the SACRAMENT. Both of these sources of nourishment are so vital and important in our lives. Let s take a moment to reflect upon the goodness that our God pours out into our lives and hearts. Let us feed on this nourishment and hope that it will produce much fruit, so that the blessings that God pours out for each one of us may not return to him void. For the last several years, Monica Conrow has been the volunteer director of our Confirmation program. She has led our youth faithfully year after year guiding them on the journey to the Sacrament of Confirmation. I am grateful to her for her dedication to this important ministry and I am also grateful for her family in supporting her in the time that she has sacrificed so that she has been able to offer her time and talent in this way to our parish. At this time Monica has shared with me that she will be stepping away from this ministry. I am sad to see her give up this ministry. It is also an opportunity for us as a parish to look at our Confirmation program and to welcome a new person to help with this important ministry. I would ask that as a parish that we thank Monica for her time as our Confirmation Coordinator and to pray that we will find a new person to take over this role. So, I will be looking for a new Confirmation Coordinator. If you feel that you may be called to help with this ministry or feel like you may want to step up to be the Confirmation Director, please send me an and let me know. In Christ s Love, Fr. James In the Spirit of St. Francis To Carlotta Delos Reyes and Merlie Hoffarber for the beautiful new altar cloth. To Rich and Carol Heinichen for the flowers for the church. In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU! St. Francis Parish would like to welcome all newcomers and visitors. We turn your attention to the Ministry Table in the narthex of the church where you will find information on the various ministries in our parish and how to contact the coordinator. New parishioners are encouraged to register by calling the office at We welcome you as we welcome Christ! 3

4 (and Let Your Child Bless You) Pbgrace.com / Pray with Your Kids (Adapted from 77 Ways to Pray with Your Kids.) Did you know that, as a baptized lay person, you are not only qualified to bless people and objects and places in certain situations (such as in your home), you are called to do so? Regularly blessing your child is a powerful symbol of your love, and more importantly, your desire to entrust your child into the care of God s love. Here s how to start: Come up with a short ritual for blessing your children during transitional times of the day (leaving /returning home, going to bed, etc.). Here s how: Make the Sign of the Cross on your child s forehead saying: May God bless you and keep you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Seal the blessing with a kiss on the forehead. Use holy water if you have it available. Even more powerfully, encourage your kids to bless you as well. Kids as young as two will enjoy reciprocating your blessing once they ve received it often enough. Another Vocation from St Francis Parish COME AND SEE Do you attend Mass with a Catholic spouse? Or perhaps you have a Catholic friend who has piqued your interest in the Church. Maybe your grandma was Catholic, and now you feel called to find out more about the Catholic faith. The RCIA might be for you. Come ask questions. Contact Linda Blackwood at or rcia@stfrancissherwood.org. Sister Emily Brabham is the daughter of Linda and Dale Brabham of Sherwood, Oregon. She will profess vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience for the first time on July 29. Sister Brabham has been in initial discernment for four years. She has participated in the life and mission of the Sisters and the intercommunity programs for pre-novitiate and canonical year while serving as Director of Youth Ministry for the parish of St. Francis Xavier in LaGrange, Illinois. She lives in community at the Franciscan Dwelling place in Chicago. I am grateful for the Sisters continuing to journey with me through this discernment process, Sister Brabham said. The gift of the Clinton Franciscan Family is an indescribable joy that I thank God for every day. I am excited to see where this journey takes me as I seek to serve God s people and live out the mission through peacemaking and active nonviolence while embracing the charism of conversion of heart. 4

5 Oregon Catholic Conference Statement House Bill 3391 Forces Coverage of Abortion and Expands Taxpayer-Funded Abortion The day after our country celebrated Independence Day the Oregon State Legislature passed a bill that has more to do with force than it does with freedom. House Bill 3391 forces insurance companies to cover abortion on demand and it forces all Oregon taxpayers to help finance an extremist abortion agenda that does not enjoy majority support. By insisting on complete insurance coverage of abortion, including late-term and sex-selective abortions, the legislature shows itself intolerant of widely-held opposing views and will compel thousands of Oregonians to support what their conscience rejects. The Oregon Catholic Conference hopes Governor Brown will not join in sending this intolerant message by signing it into law. Oregonians opposed to House Bill 3391 should lend their support to the stop taxpayer funding for abortion act. This measure needs 117,000 signatures to qualify as an initiative for the 2018 election. Visit to sign the petition and find out how you can help reverse the harmful effects of past and current legislation that implements and expands taxpayer funding for abortion. ~Homepage of Archdpdx.org Be sure to like St Francis Catholic Church on Facebook! Anna Wilson Social Action Coordinator anna@stfrancissherwood.org Food Pantry Hours: Wednesday 9-11am & 5-7pm Thursday 9-11am Pantry Needs: canned tuna, canned meats (chicken, ham, etc.), cereal Hope Diner host: St Francis Team 2 And the LORD will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail. Isaiah 58:11 Throughout the summer we face all types of dry places. We see it physically with dry fields of grass, dusty roads, and scorched earth. But, we also see it spiritually. Summer is the time for vacations and summer camps. For it being a time of getaways, it often feels much busier than any other time of the year. In times of business, our faith is often the first thing to fall by the wayside. In the verse from Isaiah, we see God s promise to us that even as we pass through times of drought, He will always be a source of water. You will be like a watered garden, He says to us. If we stay strong in Him we will be tapped into an abundant stream that will keep us green and growing. This picture resonated with me as I looked at our own garden here at St. Francis. The Hope Garden, sitting in a field of dry grass, looks like a sanctuary within the dust. It is a place of growth and new life. If you would like to continue to help our oasis flourish, let Anna in the church office know! It can be a time of spiritual and physical growth. 5

Stolen goods or their value must be returned to the rightful owner if it is possible, or to his heir. If neither the owner nor his heir can be found, the goods or their value are to be given to the poor or to charitable causes. But restitution need not be made publicly. St. Paul Family Catechism. Next Week: If we know or find out that we have purchased stolen goods, may we keep them? Respect Life Until the voiceless in the womb are granted the same right to life as those of us privileged to see the light of day, we will walk in the darkness of these terrible violations of human dignity. If we will not recognize the dignity of the most vulnerable among us, violence in society will continue and recognition of the dignity of every human person will never be realized. A society that allows the destruction of its own children in the womb can in no way call itself civilized. Human dignity. God alone bestows it. We are called to simply respect it. ~Archbishop Sample in the Catholic Sentinel Sunday, July 16 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 854 Between , childcare costs increased 13%, while incomes decreased 9%. 6
