3 From the desk of Father James Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. This weekend we encounter in our gospel reading from Matthew the familiar passage of the Beatitudes. Blessed are the poor, the meek, the lowly... As Jesus was teaching, undoubtedly, there were many that had gathered to listen to Him that were experiencing depths of poverty, poverty that ranges from monetary poverty to poverty of spirit and soul. There were those that were experiencing great loss and were mourning, mourning the freedoms that they did not have and that were not available to them, mourning the loss of loved ones There were also those that were striving to bring mercy, peace and justice into the world. There were those that were striving to live just lives and trying to treat others with justice to bring peace to those that have no peace. But, as we know they were not able to make the impact that they were seeking and may have thought, what is the point? As we hear the Beatitudes this weekend many of us find ourselves facing many of the same struggles. We too are often poor in many different ways. Maybe not always financially poor, but certainly emotionally or spiritually poor. Maybe we have lost someone that we have loved and are mourning, or maybe we are mourning the loss of an ideal or a certain chapter in our lives. Maybe we are seeking after peace, in our communities, our parish, our families, maybe in our own lives. Wherever we find ourselves today, the message that Jesus presents to us is clear. These struggles that we have and that we are enduring, will only last a short time. This is not the end, we are not bound to struggle with the issues forever. They will pass and in the end, we will be blessed, because our Lord Jesus promises something greater that is indeed on the way. But, I also want to add, we are blessed now! We are indeed following and living the life that our God has set before us. It will not be easy and our lives come with many struggles. But in the end, we are doing what is right and sometimes doing what is right, will not necessary bring us joy or comfort now. It will draw us to something that is eternal and nothing else on this earth can give us that. True peace and blessing only comes from our one true God, the true God that loves each one of us and calls us His own. Speaking of blessings... last weekend we were blessed as a parish to celebrate the First Reconciliation for our children that are preparing to receive the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time this coming May. Their sins were washed away and they are now one step closer to joining us at the Table of the Lord. Please be sure to keep them in prayer. I am also grateful for Fr. Ralph, OSB of Mt. Angel Abbey and Fr. Don Buxman and Fr. Arjie Garcia for helping out that afternoon and thanks to Ms. Violet Franco and Mrs. Laura Larsen for coordinating this event. Also keep our confirmation students, RCIA Candidates and Catechumens in prayer as they continue to prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation. Finally, I would like to take a moment to invite you all over to our St. Francis School open house this Sunday (today) January 29 after the 10:30 am Mass to check out our Parish School. I know that there are many of you that have not had the opportunity to see our awesome school facility and I would like to invite you to take a moment and come over this Sunday. Also, I want to especially invite those that may have school children or know of school children that might be interested in our school to come and check it out. I am proud to say that we have an awesome teaching staff that provides an excellent Catholic Education to our Children. We also have an awesome group of parents that grounds our school with a strong sense of community and they are waiting to welcome you to our parish school family! Have a blessed week!! Fr. James In the Spirit of St. Francis To Madeleine Clancy for laundering the altar linens for the month of December. Hosts: St Francis Team 6 Hope Shelter guests for 1/22/17: 32 How to live Mercifully "Be just and fair in all you do.... No one ever loses by being generous, noble-hearted, and courteous" (St. Francis de Sales). Pope Benedict explained that there are three inseparable elements to being Catholic: 1. Proclaiming the word of God 2. Celebrating the sacraments 3. Exercising the ministry of charity (Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Est Caritas, 2005) (In other words, being Catholic means to believe; celebrate what you believe; act on what you believe and celebrate.) What is Charity? Saint Paul reminds us: So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love (1 Cor 13:13). To be faithful to the meaning of the Gospel, love is best understood as selfless love felt by Christians for their fellow human being. Therefore, a more accurate translation of love would be charity. Love is Charity and Charity is a respect for others and a selfless love for others for no other reason than they are human. Pope Benedict later explained that the primary way of charity is justice, or, in Paul VI's words, the minimum measure of it. To desire the common good and strive towards it is a requirement of justice and charity. The more we strive to secure a common good corresponding to the real needs of our neighbors, the more effectively we love them (Caritas In Veritate, 2009, #6-7). Therefore, true mercy, the mercy God gives to us and teaches us, demands justice (Pope Francis) the institutional path, the political path, what is commonly known as social justice but is what the Catholic Church simply calls justice, the mature version of charity. Living mercifully with justice may not be easy. In our society that is marked by individualism, you may not be accepted. Jesus understands this. In the verses immediately preceding today s reading, after reading from Isaiah, Jesus sensed the crowd s incredulity, Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place (LK 4:24). How to live mercifully? Live a life marked by fairness and charity; generosity and courtesy (cf. St. Francis de Sales). Courtesy of the Office of Life, Justice and Peace. 5

6 St. Francis School Happy Catholic School s Week! The 3 rd grade has been busy getting ready to celebrate this special week in our school year! We met with our 2 nd Grade Prayer Buddies and wrote acrostic poems using the word Catholic. We also wrote letters to our parents thanking them for sending us to St. Francis! Each class decorated the window of the door into the classroom. 3 rd grade had the theme of Service. We each traced our hand print, cut it out and then wrote ways we serve others on the hand print. Mrs. Erwert put them up in the shape of a heart. Finally, we got our room ready for Open House! Catholic School s Week is always an exciting time. Each day we honor the people that make our school special. We are looking forward to getting spoiled by our teacher s on Monday. Then we have the chance to spoil them on Tuesday. Wednesday we will celebrate Mass with our Grandparents and special friends. We end the week by having lunch with our parents. We also thank all of you for all you do to support St. Francis School! In honor of World Marriage Day on February 12, a display will be set up in the Narthex celebrating this beautiful Sacrament. If you would like to be a part of the display, please bring in a COPY of your wedding photo into the Parish office with your name and wedding date written on the back. Deadline to submit photos is Monday, February 6. Stephen Ministry It s YOUR Ministry! Stephen Ministry is YOUR ministry. It is an important way we at St. Francis Church care for one another. If you are going through a difficult time, consider having a Stephen Minister. If you know someone else who is facing difficulties, suggest that they request a Stephen Minister. Make use of it. Stephen Ministry belongs to you! Catholic Corner May a person ever risk his own life or health? A person may risk his own life or health if there is a proportionately serious reason for example, to save the life of another person. St. Paul Family Catechism, 684 Next Week: Is transplantation of vital organs ever permitted? Sacramental News May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen Joan Keefe died on January 9. Her funeral was on January 14. Parishioner, Gary Lynk died on December 10. His funeral was on January 20. Respect Life "We are all sinners, of course, and the pro-life movement is a movement of converts from women who have had abortions... to men who have paid for abortions... to the doctors that have done abortions. The change of heart experienced by so many who are now defending life points to the love and forgiveness that are needed today... and which will eventually win the culture war." ~Shawn Carney, President, 40 Days for Life Sunday, January 22 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 686 If our society were truly to appreciate the significance of children s emotional ties throughout the first years of life, it would no longer tolerate children growing up or parents having to struggle in situations which could not possibly nourish healthy growth. 6

7 Happening this Week: Announcements Liturgical Ministers are asked to contact the parish office by this Wednesday, February 1 with your nonavailability dates for the next period, March through May. This includes Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. In honor of World Marriage Day on February 12, a display will be set up in the Narthex celebrating this beautiful Sacrament. If you would like to be a part of the display, please bring in a COPY of your wedding photo into the Parish office with your name and wedding date written on the back. The deadline to submit photos is Monday, February 6. The vendor has removed the paper recycling container near the old hall. To date, we have not located another vendor for this service. In previous years, paper recycling was a great fundraiser, however, this is no longer the case and we receive no funds for holding the container on our property. Please use other containers in the community or place the paper in your curbside recycling bin. Congratulations to St. Francis 7th & 8th Grade Girls for winning the CYO Volleyball City Championship for the 3rd year in a row! Way to go girls! Go Wolves! The Knights of Columbus and Respect Life Committee will be having Stations of the Cross for the Victims of Abortion: Fridays in the Month of January; Stations immediately follow the 8:30 am Mass at the memorial cross area on our parish property. Hope you will consider joining us in reparation for the lives lost to abortion. Please be sure to check the website and Facebook for Mass cancellations due to poor weather conditions.
