3 From the desk of Father James Christ BE our Light! Longing for food, many are hungry. Longing for water, many still thirst. Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed. We continue our Advent theme of Christ BE our Light this second week of Advent with the third verse of Bernadette Farrell s song by the same name, which is the inspiration of this theme. Last week we began our Advent journey as we lit the first candle of the Advent wreath. We are reminded that Christ s light leads us through the darkness that we often find in our lives. As the light continues to grow stronger this week with the second candle lit, we can see just a little bit more of the path that leads us to our God. This in turn helps us to follow the path more closely that will eventually lead us to our Father in Heaven. This week, the third verse of Christ Be Our Light challenges us to look at how there are many in our world that long for this day of food and water. With the richness that surrounds us, it is easy to forget that there are many people that fight each day to provide just enough food and drink to just get by. We often fail to see this because of the abundance that we have all around us. We often can go to the cupboard and it is full of food or we can walk to the faucet and clear clean water flows out. This is not the case for everyone in our world. I would venture to say that this may not be the case even for some of the people that we sit next to week after week in our own parish. Here at St. Francis, we do have a wonderful Social Action ministry that helps to provide some of these basic needs to our community through our Food Pantry, Hope Diner and the Hope Garden (I will talk about the Hope Shelter next week). I would like to challenge us this next week as we stop by the store, to pick up some extra cans of food or other food items that can be dropped off at food barrels in the outer Narthex of the Church. For Specific ideas, please see the Feeding the Holy Family advertisements in the bulletin and around the parish. Three other notes to point out this week; first on Thursday December 8, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Masses will be at 8:30 am and 7:00 pm, both in the main Church. THIS IS A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGA- TION. Second, as I pointed out last week, there is daily Mass being offered every day during Advent, including Monday (12:05 pm) and Saturday morning. Please plan to join us for daily Mass during Advent. Finally, I want to thank everyone that took prayer cards last weekend to pray for ALL our candidates for Sacraments of Initiation in 2017, those receiving 1 st Reconciliation and Eucharist, Confirmation and those going through the RCIA process. Please keep these individuals in prayer as they prepare to be one with us at the Eucharistic Table. In the Spirit of St. Francis To everyone who helped with set-up, serving and clean-up and those who shared their delicious salads and desserts for the Maria Breen funeral luncheon. To Deacon Bill and the Thanksgiving Mass goers for clearing out all the old Missals from the pews. To Chris Friesen, Johanna Jansen, Evlyn Turner and Willie & Melanie Battilega for putting the new Missals in the pews and getting the church ready for advent. To the 4th graders for helping Deacon Bill search the pews for the special Missals. To Michael Corella, Brian Cordell and Willie & Melanie Battilega for setting up and decorating the Christmas trees in the inner narthex. To Garden Corner for the beautiful advent wreath. To LeRoy Nollette who repaired the Mary, Joseph and donkey Advent display and put it out in the field on its journey to the church for Christmas. To Jill LaFave for laundering the altar linens for the month of November. To KC, Lisa & Anna Wilson and Dennis Freiburg for helping with the advent wreath making. In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU! 3

4 ST. FRANCIS CHURCH AND SCHOOL WOMEN S MINISTRY JOIN THE WOMEN OF THE PARISH IN A GENERAL GATHERING December High School 11 Festival of Lights at the Grotto 4:00 pm 7:00 pm RCIA NEWS The first Sunday of Advent marked the celebration of the Rite of Acceptance and the Rite of Welcome or Call to Continuing Conversion. You might ask, What is the difference between the two? Each of these Rites brings the Inquirers to the next stage of the RCIA process. With the Rite of Acceptance, Inquirers enter into the Catechumenate and are called Catechumens, seeking all sacraments of initiation. Catechumens are Jennifer Garrison, Shelly Sun, and Kristen Miers. With the Rite of Welcome or Call to Continuing Conversion, Inquirers also enter the next stage of the process, but are called Candidates because they have been baptized in the Protestant tradition, and seek Confirmation and the Eucharist. Candidates for full communion are Mary Ann Seidel and Vicki Lind. We joyfully welcome them to St Francis. ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11 AT 2:00 PM IN THE PARISH CENTER. THIS GATHERING IS A FOLLOW-UP ASSEMBLY. GROUPS HAVE BEEN FORMED ACCORDING TO INTEREST AND NEED. EACH GROUP WILL DETERMINE THE DIRECTION AND TOPICS OR ACIVITIES FOR THAT GROUP WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE COORDINATOR OF WOMEN S MINISTRY. INTERESTED? TELL YOUR FRIENDS. COME JOIN US FOR AN AFTERNOON OF CONVERSATION AND DECISION MAKING. CONTACT LINDA AT THE PARISH OFFICE linda@stfrancissherwood.org WHEREVEER TWO OR THREE ARE GATHER IN MY NAME MT:18-20 Advent Family Prayer During Advent, we not only prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but we also check in to see if we are doing all the things that will keep us ready to receive Jesus when he comes again. Talk to your family and commit yourselves to praying daily, reading Scripture, and staying faithful to God s commandments. Pray together that through this Advent season your family will be more prepared to receive Jesus when He comes again. God of Love, Your son, Jesus, is Your greatest gift to us. He is a sign of Your love. Help us walk in that love during the weeks of Advent, As we wait and prepare for His coming. We pray in the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen. 4

5 Care Ministry St. Francis visiting Eucharistic Ministers and Friendly Visitors serve not only parishioners in their homes, but also serve Catholics in assisted living centers and memory care facilities. As our ministers could tell you, residents express over and over how much joy they receive from the Eucharist, from reciting familiar prayers, and from receiving fellowship and support during the visits. Currently, our visiting Eucharistic Ministers and Friendly Visitors serve at the following assisted living centers/ memory care facilities: -- Prestige Senior Living Riverwood in Tualatin -- Farmington Square Tualatin -- Avamere in Sherwood (Deacon Bill, Communion Service) -- Marquis Tualatin Assisted Living (Fr. James celebrates Mass once per month) If you have a loved one in any of these facilities, please contact Jennifer Mirek in the parish office, so we can make sure he or she is being served. If your loved one resides at a private home, please call Jennifer as well so we can serve him or her at home. John the Baptist preaches about God from the womb (St. John Chrysostom) O what a novel and wonderful mystery! John has not yet been born but already he gives voice with his bounds; he has not yet appeared but already he manifests signs of his presence; he cannot yet cry and already he is heard through what he does; as yet he has not begun his life and already he is preaching about God; he does not yet see the light and is already pointing to the sun; he has not yet been brought forth and already he hastens to act as forerunner. The Lord is there! John cannot restrain himself; he is not going to be restricted by the limitations set by nature but strives to break out of the prison of his mother s womb and make known beforehand the Savior s coming. He who breaks our bonds has come, he says. and am I to remain shackled? Am I still bound to remain here? The Word comes to re-establish all things and am I still to remain captive? I will come out and run ahead of him and announce to all: Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (Jn 1,29). Anna Wilson Old Hall anna@stfrancissherwood.org Food Pantry Hours: Wed & Thur 9:00 am 11:00 am and Wed 5:00 pm 7:00 pm FOOD PANTRY NEEDS: Canned tuna, canned soup, toilet paper, paper towels, peanut butter, cereal, rice, beans. VOLUNTEER NEEDS: We are in need of volunteers for the Hope Shelter. For more information contact Anna Wilson in the parish office. HOPE DINER: A place for people hungry for food and friendship, Sundays - 5:00 pm at the Old Hall. All are welcome. Hosts: St Francis Team 4 But tell us, John, held fast as you are in the darkness of your mother s womb, how is it that you see and hear? How can you behold divine things? How can you be leaping and rejoicing? The mystery that is taking place is great indeed, he says. It is something beyond human understanding. It is with good reason that I am doing something new in the natural order on behalf of him who is to do something new in the supernatural order. I see even before my birth because I see the Sun of Justice gestating (Mal 3,20). I perceive by ear because, in coming into the world, I myself am the voice that goes before the great Word. I cry out because I behold the only Son of the Father clothed in his flesh. I rejoice because I see the world s Creator receive human form. I leap for joy when I think that the Redeemer of the world has taken a human body. I am the forerunner of his coming and precede your testimony with my own. St. John Chrysostom, commentary of the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 1:

6 St. Francis School We hope your family had a Happy Thanksgiving. The Kindergartners have been learning about the importance of saying thank you in Religion class. We discussed that when you say it you are saying you like what the other person has done for you. It gives you a warm, happy feeling inside when it s said to you. After learning about Thanksgiving we realized we are saying thank you to our families and friends, but most importantly to God for giving us all that we have. We tried to come up with different ways of saying thank you to others. Ideas included hugs, smiles, cards, gifts, and doing something nice. Our class service project gave us the perfect way to say thank you to others. We are collecting toys for the soldiers of the 41 st Infantry Division of the Oregon National Guard. The Kindergartners are responsible for announcing the toy drive to the student body, collecting the toys each morning, recording each classroom s contribution and at the end sorting, counting and packing the toys for the soldiers. We presented over 300 toys to the soldiers on Monday. Other Thanksgiving activities included decorating hand turkeys, coloring pilgrim pictures, sorting letters and writing numbers on turkey pictures, writing journal sentences, reading stories both silly and factual about life on the Mayflower, in Plymouth and about Thanksgiving. And of course we watched Charlie Brown s classic cartoon. The Kindergartners are thankful for all of their blessings. May you have a blessed Advent season full of family and friends. Stephen Ministry An Empty Aching Hole -- and Memories Someone you love has died, and the world is darker. At a time like this, you need a caring, concerned friend to listen to you and be with you. Someone you can talk to and know they will understand. A Stephen Minister would like to be that friend. To learn more about Stephen Ministry, contact the parish office at and say you would like to speak with a Stephen Minister. Information is also online at: Catholic Corner Why is direct or culpable suicide sinful? Direct or culpable suicide is sinful because God alone has the right over life and death, and the one who commits suicide, instead, takes his own life, thus assuming God s right, unless it can be presumed that he was not fully responsible for his act, which is very often the case. St. Paul Family Catechism, 677 Next Week: Is sterilization ever permitted? Respect Life "With regard to the embryo in the womb, science itself highlights its autonomy capable of interaction with the mother, the coordination of biological processes, the continuity of development, and the growing complexity of the organism. This is not an accumulation of biological material, but a new living being, dynamic and wonderfully ordered, a new unique human being. So was Jesus in Mary s womb, so it was for all of us in our mother s womb. With the ancient Christian writer Tertullian we can say: 'he who will be a man is already one' (Apologeticum IX, 8), there is no reason not to consider him a person from conception." ~Pope Benedict XVI Sunday, December 4 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 630 Because of poor nutrition, one-third of the world s children do not grow to reach their full potential. Good nutrition, especially in early childhood, is an essential requirement for each world citizen to earn, learn, stay healthy, and achieve his or her lifetime potential. 6
