3 This Sunday s Gospel is from St. Mark 9:38-43, 45, There are two very practical lessons we must learn from today's Gospel: the grave obligation we have of not causing scandal to our fellow-christians or indeed to any man or woman and secondly, the willingness we should have to sacrifice any earthly possession which is a cause of sin to us. Scandal, the sin of being a cause or an occasion of another's sin, is doubly sinful involving one's own sin and the sin of the person scandalized. Scandal can be caused by word that is, by teaching or propagating wrong doctrine or by giving sinful advice, and it can be caused by one's own sinful deeds which may be imitated by others. Those in positions of authority such as parents whose duty it is to bring up their children in the Christian faith, are especially liable to give scandal if they fail to live truly Christian lives. Christian parents who fail to live according to their faith will be held accountable not only for their own sins, but for the sins of their children and perhaps their children's children for generations to come. Much, if not all of today's moral laxity and permissiveness can be blamed on parents who have failed to give the example of true Christian living in the home and in dealings with their neighbors. To children of such parents, Christianity is only a label; it does not inform or inspire their lives, hence they are only nominal Christians. It is true that there may be "black sheep" in the best of Christian homes. When, however, all the children of a home are "black sheep" the whiteness, the sincerity, of the parents of such a home must certainly be called into question. There may be many bad influences at work outside the home but the good example of truly Christian parents can counteract these influences. Let parents see to it that they will not be a cause of scandal and a cause of eternal loss to the children God put into their charge. The second lesson for all of us in today's Gospel is that we should ever realize that eternal life is worth any sacrifice which we may be called on to make. The road we have to travel in life is not an easy one. As our Lord says in another place: "Enter by the narrow gate for the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. But the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few" (Mt. 7: 13). We wish to reach heaven, therefore we must be prepared to follow Christ; we must not allow others to lead us astray but be prepared and determined to conquer and resist our own evil inclinations also. Excerpted from The Sunday Readings by Fr. Kevin O'Sullivan, O.F.M. Friends and Family of an Aging Loved One: an educational support group Most of us, at some point in our lives, will care for an aging family member or friend. A vast majority of caregivers (85%) care for a relative or other loved one. Navigating the many rewards and challenges of care giving can be difficult. Finding support from others and educational resources can make the journey a little easier. On the 3rd Thursday of every month, please join us in the South Classroom of the parish center as we learn about topics related to care giving and find support from fellow group members who are caring for a loved one. Educational topics will incorporate the needs of the group, and may include guest speakers, relevant articles and videos. Any person who cares for an aging loved one is welcome, no matter what kind of care situation you and your loved one experience. Our first session is Thursday, October 18 from 6:00 pm 8:00 pm in the South Classroom. Please feel free to call parish office for more information. In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU! To Matthew and Tricia Killinger, Stephanie Killinger, Clare Killinger, Katrina and Geoff Gagner, Sharil Van Cleave, Alicia Van Cleave, Ken and Barbara Lance, Pamela Fisher, and Robert Blackwood who made the Women s Morning of Reflection a success!

5 Solidarity is about living as equals with each other. One cannot be in solidarity with another while being better than him or her. Anna Wilson Social Action Coordinator Food Pantry Hours: Wednesday 9 11am & 5-7pm Thursday 9 11am Hope Diner host: St Francis Team 2 Food Pantry Needs: toilet paper, sugar, soup, corn, coffee SOLIDARITY ALONE? Courtesy of the office of Life, Justice, and Peace In each of today s readings and Responsorial Psalm, we find examples of people acting as if they were better than another. In Wisdom it is the wicked, The wicked say: Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. In the Responsorial Psalm it is the haughty and the ruthless, For the haughty men have risen up against me, the ruthless seek my life; they set not God before their eyes. In the second reading it is those who are selfishly ambitious, looking out for themselves rather than each other, Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. In the Gospel reading it s the apostles themselves, They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. The first step toward solidarity is an internal, personal conversion that strives for humility. Jesus warned the apostles of the consequences of pride, If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. The mission of the is to reveal the love of God, made manifest in Jesus Christ, to all persons (cf. 1John 4:9). This is the rationale for believing in the unbreakable bond between love of God and love of neighbor. This is also the rationale for the Catholic principle of solidarity. We are one human family, whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers and sisters keepers, wherever they may be. (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Faithful Citizenship, 53) Solidarity is about living in unity with each other. One cannot be in solidarity alone. The second step toward solidarity is to cultivate peace. St. James asks rhetorically, Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your members? For James explains, the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. We cultivate peace by removing the obstacles of envy and passion and, once freed, making the journey towards humility, towards each other, and towards the love of God. Our commitment to solidarity with our neighbors at home and abroad also demands that we [cultivate] peace and pursue justice in a world marred by terrible violence and conflict. (Faithful Citizenship, 53) Solidarity: the unbreakable bond between love of God and love of neighbor, which leads to peace.
