3 From the desk of Father James Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. Be Joyful, all who were in mourning: exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast. This week we come to Laetare Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Lent. This day in the Catholic Church has traditionally been known as a day of celebration and joy. We are halfway through the austere season of Lent; a time of penance, prayer, and fasting that we have been doing in preparation for Easter. We are turning back from our sinful ways and are returning to the straight path that our loving God has set out for us. We see in our liturgy this morning that the priest will be wearing (hopefully) rose vestments or pink. We use the term rose, because rose is a shade of the penitential purple that we see during this season. We can relax our time of penance a bit on this day, because we can see that the joys of Easter are in sight. As we come to this mid-point of our Lenten journey, we can ask ourselves how these past 20 or so days of Lent have gone. Have we finally made our Lenten Resolution list? Have we made time to pray more, or to attend daily Mass? What about fasting? Have we been fasting? What about doing some extra works of charity? We think of these acts of charity and service during the Christmas season so easily, but we forget that the poor are around us all year, not just at Christmas. What about going to confession? We are having our St. Francis Parish Lenten Reconciliation Service this coming Thursday at 7:00 pm. What do you still have to do this Lent? There is still certainly time. I know that each year, I make it the practice of offering Mass each day of the week, even on Monday s which is my day off here at the parish. I also try and make it a habit to pray the sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary each day. These are just a couple of my Lenten Practices. But, if you have not had time to make up a list, there still is time. Also, if you have slipped in any of your Lenten Works, now is the time to restart. We are getting closer to Easter with each passing day. Let us rejoice that we are halfway there and let us also rejoice in the fact that there is still time to repent and get back in right relationship with God. 5 CRS Rice Bowl - Fourth Week of Lent Education is the foundation of everything, says Andrise. She s been teaching at the same elementary school she graduated from for eleven years. But a lot has changed since she was a student. New teaching techniques and resources are revolutionizing how students learn and how teachers teach. We use poems, dances, songs all sorts of activities to help the students improve their literacy, she says. Catholic Relief Services in partnership with the diocesan office of the Catholic Education Commission, are implementing the program Haiti Reads. Every student receives a new workbook to practice their reading and writing. This is a big change from before, when students had to copy notes from the board. Now, all the students are able to learn at the same time, Andrise says. She is getting benefits, too, as she receives frequent teacher trainings. Last year, the parish priest named her Teacher of the Year. The new techniques are working and Andrise s classroom is a high-energy place that the students love. Care Ministry Loneliness and isolation are so detrimental to the health and well-being of us all, but especially our seniors, who may not be able to safely leave their homes and participate in our faith community. Thankfully, isolation is a problem we can address as a parish. Bringing Christ and community to those who cannot physically be present at church is a vital responsibility of our faith family. We need both men and women volunteers to help fill this loneliness gap. The commitment is usually one hour per week, at a time that works for both the volunteer and recipient. Please consider being that special person who lights up the day of a senior at home. 7 Happening this Week: Parish Announcements: Out of Parish: Announcements This weekend, March 10 & 11, we will have the Catholic Relief Services Collection. Your donation will help provide humanitarian aid, resettling displaced individuals and families, and advocating on behalf of the vulnerable. Envelopes can be found in the narthex and the church entrances. The St Francis Parish Lenten Reconciliation Service is this Thursday, March 15 at 7:00 pm in the church. This Friday, March 16, we will be gathering in the parish center for Soup Supper at 6:00 pm and Stations of the Cross at 7:00 pm in the church. The Knights of Columbus will be hosting the soup supper and the Pastoral Council will be leading the Stations of the Cross. The Youth Group is hosting their annual Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, April 14 at 6:30 pm. Please join us for a fun evening of dinner and dancing. Tickets will be sold beginning next weekend. All proceeds will go to help pay for the youth attending the Steubenville Youth Conference in July. The Care Ministry needs your help bringing Christ and community to our parishioners who can no longer attend Mass. Please check out the Care Ministry section in the bulletin for more information. The tile wall will be repaired this spring once we have some warmer weather. Many tiles will need to be reset and a few more tiles that have been ordered and paid for will be placed. We are currently in the bidding process for a new tile contactor. Please contact the parish office if you have questions.
