3 From the desk of Father James Is your heart blazing? Is your heart on fire? That is a good question that we can ask ourselves this weekend in regards to what we hear Jesus saying. He says this not only to His disciples, but to us as well in the Gospel. Jesus begins the gospel this weekend by telling us that He came to set the earth on fire and how He wished it were already blazing! What is Jesus talking about when He says that He came to set the earth on fire? Jesus is talking about how His Father, our Father, sent Him into the world to set our hearts ablaze with His love. This fire is lit when we are baptized. What did each of us receive when we were baptized? We received a lighted candle, lit from the Easter Candle, the great pillar of fire that stands in our church near the baptismal font. As we are handed this lit candle we hear the words, receive the light of Christ. This light, this fire, ignites the flame in our hearts that is a very real sign to us that Christ is now burning within our hearts. We have died with Him and now we live through, with, and in Him. (Where do we hear these words, or something very similar?) We are responsible for keeping that fire, that light, burning strong in our hearts. We are to keep it burning brightly and Jesus tells us today, that He wants it to be blazing. How do we keep this fire blazing strong? Well, we do this by primarily being involved deeply in our faith. We come to Mass each Sunday, and even during the week. Many Catholic Church s around us have Mass every day. We go to reconciliation, confessing those sins that can put the fire out. We get involved in our Church, become an altar server, a lector, a Eucharistic Minister, a greeter or an usher. What about being a coffee and donut host, something you can even do as a family? There are also many other little projects that need to be taken care of around the parish that cannot be done without your help. Some examples are: taking care of the gardens, helping decorate and bringing flowers to the church. All of these ways of being involved, help us to make sure we keep that flame alive and burning strong. How are you going to keep your flame bright and blazing? In the Spirit of St. Francis To C&E Rentals for the use of a palate jack. To Mike & Dodie Rossetti for sharing their beautiful and fragrant roses for the narthex area. To Jim Carter for the beautiful table and mirror for the parish office. To the Hood family for the flowers they left after the funeral. In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU! To everyone who helped with set-up, serving and clean-up and those who shared their delicious salads and desserts for the Lorraine Hood funeral luncheon. 3

4 A Time to Persevere CatholicCulture.org August Registration for Faith Formation Preschool through High School begins this Saturday, August 13. This includes preparation for the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation. First Communion requires two years of preparation with the children receiving the sacrament in the second year. Typically children start preparation in the first grade. Confirmation candidates must be in the 9th grade or older. Middle School 31 st - Movie Night (7:30 pm - 10:00 pm) High School The days of summer have provided a welcome change of pace. However, while vacations afford us the time to relax and refresh, the change of habits and routines can also have a negative impact on our spiritual lives. The Church offers, as if to re-ignite us, in the plethora of August feasts, vivid examples of the virtue of perseverance: six martyrs two who are named in Canon I of the Mass and two who were martyred during World War II; seven founders of religious congregations, as well as three popes and two kings; the apostle, St. Bartholomew; the great Doctor of the Church, St. Augustine and St. Monica, his mother; the humble patron saint of parish priests, St. John Vianney, and the patron of deacons, St. Lawrence, who joked with his executioners while being roasted alive. It is never too late to begin as the life of the reformed sinner, St. Augustine teaches us nor too difficult to begin again, as demonstrated by the conversion of the martyr, St. Teresa Benedicta (Edith Stein). We presentday members of the Mystical Body are certain of the reward to which we are called, for Christ's Transfigured body (August 6) is a preview of that glory. Moreover, in the Assumption of His Mother (August 15), Our Lord has demonstrated his fidelity to His promise. Her privilege is "the highest fruit of the Redemption" and "our consoling assurance of the coming of our final hope the glorification which is Christ's" (Enchiridion on Indulgences). August 15 th - Garden and grub (9:00 am - 11:00 am) 23 rd - All high school men are invited to a hike on the Opal Creek Trail lead by seminarian Peter Laughlin. All hikers will first meet at St Francis at 7:00 am to carpool to the hike site. The hike will conclude with everyone returning to St Francis at 6:30 pm. The purpose of the hike is to learn what it means to be men of God through prayer, fraternity, and fun. Please contact the office for a permission slip. RCIA SPREADING THE GOOD NEWS Do you know someone who is not baptized or is baptized in another faith tradition and is interested in the Catholic faith? Do you know someone seeking answers to life s questions? If so, invite him or her to consider the Catholic Church. Contact Linda Blackwood at or linda@stfrancissherwood.org. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! The Blessed Virgin Mary is the most perfect example of Christian perseverance, but she is also our advocate in heaven where she is crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth (August 22). Mary is the "Mother of Perpetual Help", the patroness of the Congregation founded by St. Alphonsus Ligouri (August 1). "No one who has fled to her protection is left unaided" is the claim of the Memorare of St. Bernard (August 20). Heretics have returned to the faith by the prayers of her Rosary, first preached by St. Dominic (August 8) in the twelfth Century, and hearts have been converted by the graces received while wearing her Miraculous Medal, promoted by St. Maximillian Kolbe (August 14) and adopted as the "badge" for the Pious Union he founded. 4

5 GREETERS MINISTRY AT ST FRANCIS Are you aware that for several months a group of greeters has been at work in our parish? Along with the ushers, greeters strive to augment the atmosphere of welcome and hospitality at St. Francis. We are looking to expand this ministry, and would like to invite any interested parishioners to consider joining us. On August 20 and August 21 we will meet in the narthex of the church after each Mass to share information regarding this ministry. The Ministry of Greeters is simple but powerful. All that is needed is a smiling face and a friendly word. Please consider joining us. Contact Linda in the office at linda@stfrancissherwood.org or Anna Wilson Old Hall anna@stfrancissherwood.org Food Pantry Hours: Wed & Thur 9:00 am 11:00 am and Wed 5:00 pm 7:00 pm FOOD PANTRY NEEDS: toilet paper, cereal, dish soap, laundry soap, oatmeal, peanut butter, Mac and Cheese HOPE DINER: A place for people hungry for food and friendship, Sundays - 5:00 pm at the Old Hall. All are welcome. Hosts: St Francis Team 4 If you haven t worn it in the past 12 months, then it s time to get rid of it. That s the advice when deciding which clothes in your closet to keep and which to give away. Charity is not cleaning out your closet to find the more-than-twelvemonths-since-you ve-worn-it clothes to give away. Charity is not collecting stuff, then donating the stuff to an organization which collects it to give away to the poor and vulnerable, the hungry and the needy. Charity extends far beyond benevolent giving. Sacramental News May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen Parishioner Lorraine Hood died on July 19. Her funeral was on August 6. Be sure to like St Francis Catholic Church on Facebook! Follow St. Francis Catholic Church on Pinterest Visit stfrancissherwood.org for information on upcoming events, ministry happenings and many Catholic resources for all ages. At the heart of charity are relationships. Our most important relationship is the one we have with God. Therefore, charity is to love God with all our heart, soul and mind, and as it naturally follows, to love our neighbor as ourself. Living in relationship with God naturally leads one to live by the rules especially the rule of charity. Living by the rules is not the point; the intent is to love God by building His kingdom of heaven here on earth (charity). God s rules provide the necessary guidance. In the parable of the rich young ruler (Mk 10:17-30), a man asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus s first response is to follow the commandments God s rules providing the guidance necessary for living. Living in relationship with God must be total, complete, and must evolve to living in a loving relationship with God.This man s possessions were preventing him from achieving a total and complete relationship with God they were an obstacle. How often is our contribution to our relationship with God nothing more than the clothes we choose to discard after they ve hung unworn for the past 12 months? Charity is more than giving away the stuff we no longer need. Charity is the love which brings us to God. Curtesy of the Office of Life, Justice, and Peace. 5

The principal civic duties are: to vote with honesty and upright motives; to pay just taxes; to defend one s nation, even at the cost of one s life; to work for and support laws which protect Christian morals. St. Paul Family Catechism, 661 Next Week: Are we obliged to obey civil laws when they are contrary to God s law? Respect Life "No matter what our particular circumstances, we all are called to make a joyful and complete gift of self as does St. Joseph. In this way we can be contagious carriers of the Gospel of Life to a world unconscious that the Gospel contains all we need and long for." ~Father John McCloskey Sunday, August 14 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 518 Without proper nutrition during this critical 1,000 days, children can suffer permanent cognitive and physical delays. They can be shorter, and have poor eyesight and weaker immune systems. With diminished intellectual capacity, they achieve less in school and work, and earn less income. 6
