2 Big Church Day Out Next Saturday is our Big Church Day Out, our yearly initiative of going beyond the church boundaries to encounter people who may not be active in a Christian community. This Day Out is our response to Jesus command to go and make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19). The Apostles experienced a fullness of life that impelled them to bring the Good News to the ends of the earth--and so can we! In The Joy of The Gospel, Pope Francis exhorts, Those who accept Jesus offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ, joy is constantly born anew. In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy (1). Our Day Out is an opportunity for non-church members to see that time spent with Christians can be fun and rewarding. People might also be moved by the music, which tells of God s love and care for them. I met a woman last year who came for a walk in the park, but ended up staying for the concert, wiping away tears as she listened to the beautiful proclamation of God s goodness. Pray, then, for the success of our Big Church Day Out. Consider coming, and witnessing to Christian joy. Finally, invite others, that that may have a chance to receive a powerful reminder of God s love for them. People today look for happiness in many ways, but Jesus really is the answer! Ignatian Spiritual Exercises Each year, from October to May, our parish offers the 19th annotation version of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. Participants meet in small groups once a week for an hour and a half, and devote themselves to daily prayer for an hour to an hour and a half. An application and an interview are required. The Exercises begin Oct.14 and end May 5th. To apply, click on the application form link on the parish website located under Get Involved Spiritual Exercises. Special Accommodations If you are attending a mass and would like to have communion brought to you, please tell an usher/minister of hospitality prior to the start of mass if you are not seated in a handicap row. A Eucharistic Minister will be happy to bring a host to you. Those seated in the handicap rows can choose to receive under both species. Thank you to all who were able to be a part of Marie Mullen s retirement celebration July 31 st, from the planning, setting up, praying with and blessing her at the Mass, to the offering of hugs, thank yous, sharing of memories and well-wishes, cleaning up after, etc. As Marie has been an instrument of God s love for so many over the years, may she, in turn, be graced in her retirement! Congratulations!! It s farewell but not good-bye! Mother Teresa of Calcutta, p Hour Eucharistic Adoration Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament flows from the sacrifice of the Mass and serves to deepen our hunger for Communion with Christ and the rest of the Church. Holy hours are the Roman Catholic devotional tradition of spending an hour in Eucharistic Adoration in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Please join us for an hour between 6:00pm, Friday, August 18 and Noon on Saturday, August 19. Pray for our parish, the greater Salem community, and your personal intentions.

3 Youth Happenings Grades 3-4 and 5-6 Youth Ministries In August, come and join us on TUESDAYS, 6-7PM in Youth Center: entrance around back of St Julie Hall. Youth Ministry Community Appreciation Due to scheduling and vacation conflicts, the activity and visits are being postponed until after the school year is underway. Please watch for more details in September. Hope is the virtue of a heart that doesn't lock itself into darkness, that doesn't dwell on the past, but is able to see a tomorrow. Follow POPE FRANCIS on Parish Community Garden to feed those in need. Several more zucchinis have been picked. Would you be able to give an hour some week to help harvest the produce that is then given to our Food Pantry? Contact Pete Klecan, Peggy Brubaker or Sue Levesque. College Care Packages!! It s that time of year again!!! We want our parish college students living away at school to know that we continue to care about them! Sts. Mary and Joseph families: be sure to send your son/daughter s mailing address to Sue Levesque at the parish office so we can send them a college care package during the year!!! What s Happening at KidsChurch WE ARE HERE THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER!! August Is All About How...Jesus Is Sweet!! The little ones all sat anxiously waiting and wondering to see the contents of the large gift bag in front of Miss Dawn. The question that was posed to the group was what would we need if we were going to have a birthday party? Among the contents in the bag were party hats, a present, noisemakers and balloons filled with confetti. It looked like we had everything we needed and were ready for our celebration! It turned out that we were missing a key component, A Birthday Cake! This activity led us in to our Bible story about The Wedding At Cana. (The little ones were asked to listen closely to see what was missing from this celebration.) Jesus was able to help at the wedding. He was able to make others feel happy inside and out. We learned that this was the first of many miracles that Jesus would perform. The missing item from the wedding was the wine. (Miss Dawn worked her creative magic and demonstrated this miracle!) Jesus calls us to help others! Family Faith Formation Sessions beginning right after Labor Day! Registrations were asked to be completed by June 1 st Classes are being set up now A couple of options have already filled up and waiting lists have been started. Sign up NOW!!!!! Next year s handbook and registration forms are available at the church entrances and online at the parish website. Emmaus Experience Summer Option High School youth registered for this option meet on Tuesdays at 7pm in the Youth Center August 15, 22 and 29. Join Saints Mary and Joseph Parish as we sponsor the 2 nd Annual Big Church Day Out a Family Concert at Field of Dreams on August 19 th from 1pm 5pm. We will once again be collaborating with other local churches as well as Stand Up Salem, to bring the Word of God to the streets! There will be popcorn, cotton candy, drinks, face painting and more. So mark your calendars and bring your friends and lawn chairs. Let us pray for our community as we unite in song.

4 Ministry Matters Caring for Our Spiritual Home For our parish family, the Church buildings are our spiritual home, so we naturally wish to be good stewards and keep them looking beautiful both inside and out. Can you give the parish 1 or 2 hours a week to help with things like mowing the lawn, trimming the shrubs, or doing some occasional light painting? Or helping inside the churches with various housekeeping tasks like vacuuming, dusting or sweeping? Could you make a donation of service through your business? One of the ways that we can fulfill our mission to make disciples is to be attractive in all ways to our brothers and sisters in our community, and so many hands are needed to maintain all of the parish buildings. The schedule is flexible, but requires commitment. Would you please help give glory to God? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA, is a great way to have questions answered while learning about what it means to have a relationship with Jesus and the Catholic Faith. Do you know someone seeking a relationship with God? Why not ask them if they would consider attending and learning more about our Catholic Community? We will begin with an inquiry session on September 11 th at 6:30pm. For more information call Justine Dufour ext 103 Cor Unum Cor Unum is a meal center ministry of St. Patrick Church in Lawrence. They provide free, nutritious meals in a safe environment to anyone who is in need of food, regardless of race, color, creed, sex, or way of life. Our parish has committed to provide 12 volunteers the 4 th Thursday and Saturday of each month. We assist by serving the meal, doing dishes, getting drinks, sweeping and washing floors after, etc. Thursday, August 24 th we need 4 more volunteers and Saturday, August 26 th we need 5. Please contact Sue Levesque if you could serve with us one of these nights. ALMOST COMPLETE!!! Last Spring Faith Formation families were invited to help create a neater and cleaner hall at MQP. Thanks to the generosity of the Coco, Davy, Devine, Lucas, and Occhipinti families the wood, sheetrock, and paint have been purchased. Thank you to Richard Gomez and Tommy Ahlers who volunteered to construct the closet to store chairs, lecterns, etc. Thanks to Sue Levesque s husband and daughter (Jerry and Mary), walls and doors were repainted and Jerry hung the pictures and curtains! WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Now we will have a neater and cleaner place to gather because of people s generosity!!! THANK YOU!!!! Donations are still being accepted to help cover expenses, so if you wish to help, donations may be sent to the parish office. Please join the Knights of Columbus as they install the officers on Sunday, August 20 after the 11:00am Mass at St. Joseph. Refreshments following at the Council Hall. Shared Meal Ministry Our ministry is to help individuals and families in the Salem area who need temporary care and could benefit from a meal being brought to their home. Please contact Justine Dufour at or Therese Vallario at Saints Mary & Joseph Food Pantry x131 Food Pantry Hours Every Friday 11:30am to 12:30pm. Salem residents can visit the Pantry every four weeks. Please call by Thursday Noon for Friday pick-up. Prayer Line We are families that pray for those who have died and those struggling with health issues or any kind of discord in their families. Requests for prayer are sent to prayers by first name only for family privacy. Light refreshments will be served in the Family Room following the recitation of the rosary. Senior (62+) National Parks Lifetime Pass For $10 you can gain admission to any National Park for the rest of your life! Until August 27, your pass will cost $10, after that it will be $80. Go to the nearest national park in Lowell, MA. with a proper ID or go online to apply. JOSEL Bereavement Support Group Bereavement support sessions will be taking a break over the summer, however the group still meets on Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM at Sayde s for a light dinner. The address is 136 Cluff Crossing Rd. in Salem. Call with questions. Weekly Family Play Group starting on Wednesday September 20! This drop-in program is a time for Moms, Dads and kids to get together to visit and play with new friends. This free program will take place every Wednesday from 9:30 11:30 am and no commitment is necessary. Drop in when you can and stay as long as you like! (All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.) We are currently looking for volunteers to help oversee this program once a month.
