2 Third Sunday of Lent, March 4, 2018 Unleavening Deacon Jay On the last days before Passover, Jewish families thoroughly clean their homes, especially the kitchen, of every bit of chametz leaven. Chametz is found in any food made of grain and water that is allowed to ferment and rise: bread, cereal, cake, cookies, pasta, beer. Because chametz is such a big part of our diets, getting rid of chametz is not a simple task. Every carpet is vacuumed, every floor is swept, every surface is scrubbed. On the night before Passover, many parents hide pieces of bread throughout the house and send their children to find them, to make them part of the ritual of Passover house cleaning. Whatever food with chametz is found is either given away or burned. A separate set of pots, dishes and cutlery are then brought out for Passover. Chametz is the opposite of matzo, the unleavened flat bread eaten by the Israelites the night before their escape from Egypt. The tradition of Passover unleavening is to experience again the newness of what God has done: freeing his people from slavery and bringing them into a new land of promise and hope. The custom is to remove the spiritual leaven from their lives that displace the things of God. As we prepare for Christ s passing over from the cross to resurrection this Lent, may we embrace the spiritual practice of unleavening : to sweep away the chametz of business-as-usual that steals our time and energy away from realizing the love of God that is at the center of Christ s death and resurrection. Over this second half of Lent, may we sweep our houses of the unnecessary and distracting chametz in our lives and embrace the humility and joy of the matzo in order to fully experience Easter re-creation in our hearts and homes. Each day we want to show others that Jesus cares for them. By doing kind and loving things, we will be leaving many HEARTPRINTS along the way. Our Heartpirnt Prayer Circle focus last Sunday was on Sharing. Just as the sun shines it's light to help us see during the day, when we share something with someone else(toys, a smile, a hug...)when they are sad or may not be having a good day, we shine our light just like the sun to make others feel happy so that they can shine too! The little ones each had a turn to say something that they could share with someone to make them feel happy. Each child placed a smiley face sticker onto one of the large hearts on our Kids Prayer Wall Display. Encounter Lent through CRS Rice Bowl: Encounter Safiata The dry and dusty climate of Burkina Faso means farming can be difficult. It means water can be hard to come by. And it means Safiata and her family often face hunger. Even though she had two plots of land to farm, the many months each year without rain made feeding her 9 children and 16 grandchildren a real challenge. Girls Helping Girls: Dress Donation Drive The Girl Scouts are sponsoring a Gently Used Holiday Dress Drive. They need dresses in size 10 & under to give to local area families. If you do not have a dress, they will also accept girl s dress shoes, purses, dress coats & accessories. Drop your items off at Mary Queen of Peace entrance, local elementary schools, St. Joseph School & Boys and Girls Club. Donations will be accepted until March 23. Thank You for your support! Hola from Honduras! The team arrived safely, and they have been greeted with open arms wherever they go. They have done lots of painting: two coats on the and the interior& exterior of the water treatment plant that they helped build last year. They also had enough paint to finish painting the side of the school that they started to paint last year. They also had a wonderful party for the children in the orphanage, and delivered supplies and toured the hospital. Everyone is very grateful for all they give them and do!
