2 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 17 The US Bishops as well as the Jesuit Conference are urging Catholics to support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects from deportation people who were brought as children to this country. Many of these have been educated in Catholic schools, and many now have families of their own. They are now in danger of deportation. The Catholic Church maintains the enduring truth of Scriptural demands that we sacrifice time and resources in caring for those in need, including the resident alien (Dt 10:18), the stranger (Mt 25:35): What you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me (Mt 25:45). Following are excerpts from the Bishops statement. DACA men and women entered the U.S. as minors and often know America as their only home. They have lived out their daily lives with a determination to flourish and contribute to society: continuing to work and provide for their families, to serve in the military, to receive an education. Now, they face deportation. This decision is unacceptable and does not reflect who we are as Americans. Today, our nation has done the opposite of how Scripture calls us to respond. Today s actions represent a heartbreaking moment in our history that shows the absence of mercy and good will. DACA men and women are woven into the fabric of our country and of our Church, and are, by every social and human measure, American. We strongly urge Congress to act and immediately resume work toward a legislative solution. As people of faith, we say to DACA men and women, you are children of God. The Catholic Church supports you and will advocate for you. Father Tom THANK YOU! Fr. Mulligan wishes to express his sincere thanks for your many prayers while he was hospitalized and for the concerns for his health. He is very grateful for the many expressions of concern and is truly impressed by the faith of so many who trusted in the Lord. IN THE NEWS RESTORE, RENEW, PROCLAIM THE HOPE THAT IS CHRIST! The Diocese of Manchester is launching an initiative to strengthen faith formation in our parishes and schools. It is called Restore, Renew, Proclaim the Hope that Is Christ. The goal of this initiative is to make lifelong faith formation a priority and a reality in all our parishes. To accomplish this, we will be looking at ways to strengthen our youth ministry and adult faith formation processes, as well as reimagining our sacramental preparation programs. At the heart of all this is a desire to form disciples of all ages. Exciting things will be happening in all our parishes as we look forward with hope and with confidence that the Holy Spirit will guide all our efforts. Our parish will continue to be a place where disciples are formed in the faith and sent out on mission. Go to for more information on this diocesan initiative. "To the extent that we abandon our personality to Him, He will take possession of our will and work in us. We are no longer ruled by commands coming from the outside, as from a cruel master, but by almost imperceptible suggestions that rise up from within. We feel as if we had wanted all along to do those things He suggests to us; we are never conscious of being under command. Thus our service to Him becomes the highest form of liberty, for it is always easy to do something for the one we love." Fulton J. Sheen, p. 182, Peace of Soul Artists Wanted ($$): Help us design the JESUS MATTERS! sign that we hope to post on lawns throughout Salem in the near future. Your design will be selected from all the entries and used for signs displayed by members of most of the Salem Christian churches. A very rough example is shown in the accompanying picture. Signs will be printed in one color and will be 18 X 24 ; your entry should be submitted in the same format. At least 4 should be left at the bottom for the information unique with each church. A $30 gift card will be presented to the chosen artist. Deadline for your submission is September 30th. Submit it directly to Deacon David in hard copy to the Parish Office at Saints Mary & Joseph Parish, 200 Lawrence Road, Salem, NH. Contact him for any clarification needed ( ).

Charity helps us to know the truth and truth calls for acts of kindness. Follow POPE FRANCIS on What s Happening at KidsChurch September finds us as...the Apples Of God's Eye Do you know what is even better than our regular love? IT'S GOD'S LOVE! Each child had a small bowl of baking soda (regular love) in front of them. Each child added God's Love (Vinegar) and our regular love quickly changed! Each plain bowl of baking soda started to bubble and fizz and change color! God's Love added to our love is truly awesome! Our Bible story last Sunday focused on Abraham sending his helper Eliezer to Haran to find a wife for Abraham's son, Isaac. The little ones enjoyed our role-playing activity. Eliezer was worried that he wasn't going to be able to find a wife for Isaac. He prayed (talked) to God and asked for help in finding the perfect wife for Isaac. As we know, God answers our prayers, and He answered Eliezer's by sending Rebekah to be Isaac's wife. God cares about us very much! He wants to fill our hearts with his Amazing Love because we are His Children and we are super special to Him! September 17 th : David The King (Trust in the Lord, and do good) Dawn Pavlini, Director of KidsChurch Kidschurch@saintsmaryandjoseph.org First Reconciliation Preparation at Mary Queen of Peace Children beginning preparation for First Reconciliation and their parents have their first meeting coming up!!! Call for new Altar Servers! Boys and girls of all ages are welcome-- the only requirement is that they must have received the sacrament of First Holy Communion. The time commitment is one mass per month. If serving at our St. Joseph campus contact Ellen Corning at or ellen.corning@phillips.com. 4 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 17 Ministry Matters We are about ready to kick off our new year of Faith Formation and we need a few more small group leaders. Our classes meet once a month, either following or preceding one of the weekend Masses, and involve the student s whole family. Would you be interested in helping the children with one of our grade-level groups? Training & interactive lessons are provided, and parents who are part of the teaching team are exempt from paying tuition fees. Sound like something God is calling you to be a part of? Contact Sue Levesque at the parish office, and you will be asked to fill out a volunteer application. Ignatian Spiritual Exercises Each year, from October to May, our parish offers the 19th annotation version of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. Participants meet in small groups once a week for an hour and a half, and devote themselves to daily prayer for an hour to an hour and a half. An application and an interview are required. The Exercises begin Oct.14 and end May 5th. To apply, click on the application form link on the parish website, located under Get Involved Spiritual Exercises. DivorceCare DivorceCare is a support group within a 13 week video-assisted course that is free. Required workbook is $20. Scholarships are available. Thank you to our parish family and community volunteers who are tending to our garden which is feeding those in need! You ll see us at Salemfest. Stop by our parish table on the library lawn!!! The Library at St. Joseph Family Room, which is open to all parishioners of Saints Mary & Joseph Parish, is undergoing change!!! (Yes! Change can be Good.) Thanks to the donations of bookcases from Campion Center in Weston, MA and The Center for Life Management in Derry, NH we are now able to plan for an expansion of the library. Phase One will be adapting these AWESOME bookcases to be used in the Family Room safely. Anyone with interest in helping during this phase is asked to Terry Austrew at taustrew@gmail.com or leave a contact phone number or address at the Church office. Bereavement Group to start again on Thursday, October 5 th, 7:00 to 8:00 PM. All groups are free of charge and there is coffee and snacks at no charge. Why do we need bereavement support groups? The reason is, the extended family and friends were all in the same neighborhood one or two generations ago. As you know it is not that way anymore. The grief support groups provide the support that we no longer have. Grief is the pain that we feel inside. To mourn is to express the grief which in turn helps us heal. We need to speak of the good times and the difficult times, of our loneliness and our need to memorialize our loved one. We need to cry and express our anger in a safe place. There are trained facilitators on the Bereavement Team to companion people through the journey of grief. No one gives advice or tells us what to do. No one says to get over it and to move on. No one is expected to share if they do not want to. Just listening can be healing to realize that others are in the same boat. Alan Wolfelt, a renowned psychologist and author who runs a large Bereavement Center in Colorado says If you don t grieve well, you won t live well. The groups work. If you are grieving, come to see for yourself. You have nothing to lose. What is discussed in the group is confidential. Call: Linda O Reilly for more information. On September 9, 2017, I was honored to be among ten men who were ordained to the Permanent Diaconate by Bishop Libasci at St. Joseph Cathedral in Manchester. Michelle and I want to express our deep appreciation to our parish priests and fellow parishioners at Saints Mary and Joseph for your support and prayers during these four years of formation that led to ordination. The constant encouragement we received along the way helped carry us through our journey. I have been assigned a permanent deacon at St. Matthew Parish in Windham. As I undertake this new assignment, Michelle and I wanted to be sure to let you know how blessed we have been by your prayers and good wishes.
