2 Traveling light It starts innocently enough: a chafing dish here, a set of coffee mugs there. The next thing you know, you re buried under an avalanche of stuff. In her book Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake, Anna Quindlen writes about her own battle with consumerism, from her first one-room apartment to marriage, when the flood began. She writes: One day I peered inside my closet and realized it looked like it belonged to a woman with multiple personality disorder. The bohemian look, the sharp suits, the frilly dresses. Those days are behind me, and I finally know whom I m dressing: a person who has 18 pairs of black pants. But the day comes when we realize we no longer care about most of our stuff. We all used to say it was photo albums, but with digital photography we all have our pictures on computer. My cookbooks are well-thumbed, but I know the best recipes by heart now... There s a porcelain bird I gave my mother the Christmas before she died which she owned for less than a month, and which I ve wrapped carefully in tissue and taken with me from the small apartment to the bigger apartment to the first house to the bigger house... But in case of disaster, I d probably just grab a few old family photos and the Labradors. I d be wearing the watch and the rings my husband gave me... I haven t removed the wedding ring since the day he put it on me and the priest blessed it. I d miss the rest, but I wouldn t mourn it. It comes to this, Quindlen writes: There is now so much stuff in my head. Memories and lessons learned have taken the place of possessions. In sending the Twelve on their first mission, Jesus instructs them to travel light : to focus on the journey and the ministry with which they have been entrusted, not with accumulating wealth, status and power along the way. Clearing out the clutter of our lives to make room in our lives for the things of God is a constant struggle for all of us; but we have been called by Jesus to focus our lives on the treasures of this life given us by God love, reconciliation, forgiveness, compassion, joyful generosity, hopeful mercy that are found within our hearts and kept safe in our memory. Deacon Jay 2019 Mass Intention Book The office has suspended scheduling mass intentions for 2019 until closer to the new year. Thank you for your understanding & cooperation. Wednesday Evening 6:30 Mass Saints Mary & Joseph Parish will no longer be offering the Wednesday evening mass at 6:30pm. If you want to attend a mass on Wednesday, please check St. Patrick in Pelham for 8:00am mass. 18-Hour Eucharistic Adoration Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament flows from the sacrifice of the Mass and serves to deepen our hunger for Communion with Christ and the rest of the Church. Holy hours are the Roman Catholic devotional tradition of spending an hour in Eucharistic Adoration in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Please join us for an hour between 6:00pm, Friday, July 20 and Noon on Saturday, July 21 in St. Julie Hall. 3 Youth Happenings Elementary/Middle School Youth Ministry The CIA Middle School and The Jesus Kids Elementary Youth Groups are taking a break for the summer. Mark your calendars for their Kick-off: August Register NOW before you forget!!!! Only 4 weeks left before the late fee is applied!!! Registrations received after August 10 th will pay a late fee! Forms are at the church entrances and online at the parish website. The diocese is in the process of restoring the order of when the sacraments are received: Baptism, Confirmation then First Communion. Over the next 2 years we will be in transition Next year youth in grades 3 and 7-12 will be confirmed in the Spring (2019). Youth in grades 5 and up will be confirmed Spring 2020, as will the new 3 rd graders. What s Happening at KidsChurch We're Here Throughout The Summer! Join Us For Faith And Fun! In July We Are: God's Happy Campers! Our Kids Church camping adventure began as the little ones selected the perfect campsite. With tambourines in hand, everyone joyfully resounded We Can Praise The Lord! The children heard the Bible story of how the people built a special place for God, called a Tabernacle. When we come to Kid's Church, we are able to give glory and praise to God for all that He does for us and our families everyday. Last Sunday, we packed up our boat and embarked on a fishing trip with our friends Andrew, James, John and Peter. An essential item for all fishermen is of course Worms! (in our case, gummy worms). The little ones each held this little worm made of gelatin and sugar. They were able to pull and stretch it out quite easily. The message of this object lesson activity was that God stretches us like a potter who shapes a lump of clay into something useful. God wants to make us into something amazing and awesome so that we can continue spreading the Good News! 4 Please help our neighbors affected by the recent fire! A few weeks ago there was a devastating fire in the Depot that left 17 people homeless. If you have duplicate household items, or things you no longer need, please drop them off at the Isaiah 58 South Broadway location. They are also accepting toiletries, furniture and gift cards. They are open on Tuesday and Thursday and other days by appointment. Call for specific details. Please support them in their efforts! Thank you for your generosity. It is our largest parish fundraiser since it began in The cost is $100 for the year. The membership is limited to 300 and we currently are at 151 members so there is room for YOU. There are three monthly $125 prizes. Then GRAND PRIZE drawings take place at a social gathering in June where ice cream, drinks and a real slice of the pie are served. Grand Prizes include ten prizes at $150 each, and one each of $250, $500 and $1,000. This gives every member 49 chances to win! Matthew Mason, at or mmason@rcbm.org Community Garden Our gardens are growing and blooming!!!! Last week 9 gallon bags of lettuce were picked and delivered to our Food Pantry... Would you believe that 9 families had signed up for food last week?! 9 families in need and 9 bags of lettuce collected!!! God works in mysterious ways. Yellow beans and beets were also picked from our gardens and given to the Food Pantry! We have an AMAZING and dedicated group of parishioners and community volunteers tending to our gardens at the Mary Queen of Peace campus and the Hawkins Glen location! Because of their compassion we are able to grow vegetables to supply our Food Pantry. We are in need of tomato cages for our many tomato plants!!! If you are able to donate any, please drop off at the parish offices. Thank You!!!! Our Regional Catholic School Continues to Grow! Saint Joseph Regional Catholic School is looking for additional staff! They need to fill the following positions for the upcoming school year. Elementary teachers with experience teaching grades 3-5; a junior high school science/religion teacher; a part-time library/media & technology teacher; and substitute teachers. Shared Meal Ministry Our ministry is to help individuals and families in the Salem area who need temporary care and could benefit from a meal being brought to their home. Atonement Band CD Fundraiser Attention Saints Mary and Joseph parishioners: Atonement is doing a last minute fundraiser for Fr. Tom and the High School in Yap! The band made their own rendition of We are the World on a single CD. The message of this song is so powerful! Thank you for your Love Offering for the CD. May God bless all who hear this and support this cause. Father Tom is special and deserves this little extra for the poor people he will Shepherd. Contact Brenda Terry and the Atonement band at What is SIA? One CDC report is that two out of five men, and three out of five women were sexually abused/molested. The S.I.A. (Survivors of Incest, Anonymous), is a 12-step spiritual program that provides support and healing for those who were sexually molested/abused as children regardless of who the perpetrator was.
