1 Hanborough Parish News Our Rector, Rev David Tyler, writes this month Dear friends, 'You can't teach an old dog new tricks' so the saying goes. I don't know how 'old' is 'old' but I'm not sure I agree. I have been thinking recently about how some of the things I now do all of the me I used to find impossible, really frightening or at least a real challenge. I used to hate public speaking and get really nervous... now with lots of prac ce it just comes naturally. Or, I used to find driving a car incredibly confusing now I do it without thinking. Or as I sit at my computer typing I realise that I used to have to search for all of the le ers now I just type some mes without even looking at the keyboard I just do it naturally with only the occasional tryping mistake (joking!). As we grow up, so many things become common place to us and we become more proficient at so many more things and o en wiser too. There are of course things we can no longer do I used to be able to touch my nose with my big toe now if I tried it would almost certainly be followed by a visit to hospital! Also I don't feel the need to do this any more... not quite sure why I ever did? But as we grow up we become more efficient at many tasks even old dogs can learn new tricks. The Chris an faith understand Chris ans as people who should always be seeking to change not necessarily to learn more skills but to be people who are con nually transformed into the likeness and character of God. So dogs can learn new tricks and Chris an dogs should always be seeking to be transformed ever more into the people God wants us to be. So let's recognise how we have progressed during our lives: in our thinking, in mastering our fears and perhaps in mastering some skills and let us seek to be the people God wants us to be. With best wishes, David Visit us online at: Three Congregations: One God, One Parish May 2016

8 At the End of the Day At the end of the day just kneel and say "Thank you, Lord, for my work and play." I've tried to be good, for I know that I should That's a prayer for the end of the day! So when the new dawn begins to break Just lift up your eyes, let your heart awake Be ready to meet what the day may send And be ready to greet every man as a friend. Nobody knows what a power you have found So do what you can for the others around Carry them high when they seem to be low As on your way you go. At the end of the day just kneel and say "Thank you, Lord, for my work and play." I've tried to be good, for I know that I should That's my prayer at the end of the day! Lyrics by Donald O'Keefe Thanks to Roy Stone for submitting this the Editor 8
9 Message from Peter Ball Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We can never be quite sure what surprises may be in store for us day by day, or week by week. But we can be certain of God s never ending love for us. We can be certain of God s capacity to guide us in every step that we take, and God s judgement to intervene in the most remarkable ways. Following several tests and scans over the past few weeks am now awai ng treatment for a cancerous tumour that has been developing in my Liver! I have named this new 'guest' of mine 'Ollie'(ver). This is most likely to culminate in surgery during May. In conversa ons with my consultant(s) they have been very careful to explain what this means for my body, the short and long term expecta ons, and the various treatments that may or may not be considered. Have I been praying? Yes. Lots before these conversa ons, quietly to myself during them, and a lot more since! Are others praying for me? Yes. Which I draw much comfort and strength from; please, please, con nue. Have I things to be thankful for, Yes For Denise, Nicola, and Catherine especially, who take such good care of me For those who are praying for me For my very alert GP who responded to the 'slightly high' results of a rou ne diabe c blood test... For knowing that I am receiving the best of medical care from a highly dedicated and caring team of prac oners. In all this, it is so good to be able to pause at mes and simply rest in God s love love that is given uncondi onally. Knowing that this love does not have to be earned, it is an honour to marvel in the midst of it. God is Good "For the joys and for the sorrows, the best and worst of mes, For this I have Jesus". 9
