1 HANBOROUGH PARISH NEWS Our Rector, Rev David Tyler, writes this month Dear friends, The 24th June will be an important day for our churches, but especially an important day for our Curate Emma Hopegood Jones, for it is the day when she will be priested. Pries ng in the Church of England always causes some confusion and rightly so. When someone in the C of E takes up their first role a er theological college they are ordained a deacon and usually a year later they are ordained priest, which is what is happening to Emma on the 24th. But when you are ordained deacon in the C of E you get a dog collar and you are called 'Reverend' when you are ordained priest you don't see so much she will s ll wear a collar and s ll be called 'Reverend'. So what's the difference? Visit us online at: Three Congrega ons: One God, One Parish When someone is ordained priest in the C of E, the difference is around what the person can do. A priest can lead a communion service, a priest can anoint with oil, a priest can pray a blessing too people and there are a few other bits too! So on the 24th June when Emma is ordained priest she won't look any different she won't be called anything different, but importantly she will be able to lead a service of communion. So Emma will be ordained at Dorchester Abbey in the morning of the 24th at 10:30am and then in the evening at 6pm at Ss Peter and Paul, Church Hanborough Emma will preside at a Communion Service for the first me. It will be the culmina on of years of discerning and prepara on for Emma and we will be celebra ng. Do come and join us if you can to celebrate with Emma. Ordina on is a strange thing a strange but important thing and for Emma a response to the call she heard God place on her life some year ago. Do join us if you can and if you pray do pray for Emma. With best wishes David June 2018

6 Emma s Pries ng and First Communion Service Emma is soon to be priested and we are taking a collec on to buy her a gi from our parishes. If you would like to contribute to this gi please give a dona on to a churchwarden or to David. Dear Friends, I will be priested on Sunday 24th June at 10.30am in Dorchester Abbey, and would really value your support, both in prayer and in person, if you felt able to join us at the Abbey for the service, all are very welcome. At 6pm on the same day, I will preside at Holy Communion for the first time, at Ss. Peter and Paul, Church Hanborough, and would love it if this special service was a real celebration with the whole benefice. We will be blessed with wonderful music from a choir made up of friends of Church Hanborough, and will be serving refreshments after the service. This day is the culmination for me of just over 10 years of discerning my vocation to the priesthood, and Chris and I would love as many of you as are able to celebrate with us. Please do pray for me as I prepare to be priested. With Love, Emma 6

9 A belated thank you (sorry, Editor s error) Lilies for Easter in St Peter & St Paul s Church We would like to thank everyone who gave so generously this year towards the Lilies and flowers in St Peter and St Paul for the Easter Sunday Service and also to thank all those who helped to decorate the Church for Easter. Jane Rogers Holiday Bible Club 2018 please read It is with great regret that we have now decided not to run a Holiday Bible Club this year. Holiday Bible Club requires about 40 volunteers to run and with the unusual holidays and other factors it became increasingly obvious that we will not be able to get the required team in place this Summer. We an cipate running a Holiday Club in 2019 and if you think you may be willing to volunteer please do get in touch. David Hanborough Churches Cake Stall at Hanborough Show, Saturday 8 th September 2018 Again this year we will be having a cake stall at The Show. We have always welcomed your help and hope we can count on you again this year. Please do make a note of the date and come and support us. If you can make a cake for the stall you can deliver it to Gillian Hunt, 38 Millwood End or Anne e Simpkins, 61 Millwood End on Friday 7 th September or directly to the stall on Saturday morning, 8 th September. As in previous years we will be dona ng the monies from the stall to the DEC (Disasters Emergency Commi ee) who are always ready to respond to the many natural disasters. We look forward to seeing you there! 9
