1 20th August, 2017 JESUS IS CENTRAL: JESUS IS OUR FOCUS LUKE 10:38-42 We re looking at a new theme for the next eight weeks. It s a simple theme, deeply embedded in our Churches of Christ beliefs and a part of Ringwood s mission statement and more importantly our DNA. It s an easy theme to proclaim but it is a more complicated one to live out, at least for me! Over the next two months we ll explore together what it means to have Jesus as the centre of our lives. Today, we are visiting with two familiar faces, Martha and Mary. Andrew Menzies preached excellently on this passage a while ago. So why are we here again? It s because, as a group of us were discerning the starting point for this series, this passage resonated with us. We have just entered one of the most significant phases in the life of our church in the past 25 years as we farewelled John and Chris last Sunday. Transition can be tricky. It can throw us off balance. It can blur our focus. How do we respond to that? Obviously, with care for one another, prayer and discernment. And with a refreshed focus on Jesus. But Martha was distracted with all the preparations that had to be made. (Luke 10:40) Martha was busy preparing for Jesus. Her focus, however, was on the what not the who, on the preparation not the person. Martha is busy doing good deeds and focusing on making her home acceptable by the high standards of Middle Eastern hospitality. She is doing everything she can to make her home ready for Jesus, yet misses who is sitting in her living room. It is the Lord of Creation, the Messiah, the One who performs miracles and forgives sins, who welcomes women, lepers, the poor, sinners and foreigners. The One who is on His way to Jerusalem to give his life and be resurrected. Right there. Right in her midst. This passage reminds me of my need to focus on Him first, and not miss the One who is present with me: Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:42) Craig Brown

Dear 'everyone'... Well that was enormous and richly memorable fun! It was such an honouring, energised celebration of God's goodness and worship last Sunday. Thank you to all those who planned, created, rehearsed, cooked, prepared and in the end cleaned up... Such a feast of well chosen public words and very kind private gifts and expressions of love. Chris and I feel very cared for. It has been a rich and abiding privilege to be part of your lives and to explore God's grace and call. It has been such a gift and it might take us many years to unpack the fullness of it. We pray that you will all continue to grow in Faith, hope and love in Christ: John and Chris Like Ringwood Church of Christ on Facebook to keep up with all our upcoming events and what s happening in our community.

3 PRAYER ACTION Please pray for Fred Morris, Max Moody, Gwenda Emerson, and John Mollison who have all been hospitalized recently. Please pray for their health going forward, for their continued wellbeing, and families and medical professionals who will provide care for them. Please pray for the family of Claire Horvath who passed away last week. Claire had worshipped with us for many years, prior to going into Aged Care around 3 and a half years ago. Please pray for Claire s daughters and wider family. Claire s funeral service will be held at Ringwood Church of Christ, on Monday, (tomorrow) 21 st August at 2.00pm. Also pray for Fiona Hall, Greg and the family on the death of Fiona s mum Lyn Mackay, who visited and shared with us from time to time here at Ringwood. Please pray for the family as they celebrate the life of Lyn on Wednesday, 23 rd at 11.15am, in the Federation Chapel at Lilydale Memorial Park. Please continue to pray for Julie Waterhouse and the family on the passing the week before last of Julie s mum, Merle. Please pray for Laurie Prentice on the death of his brother, Jeff, last Sunday. The funeral will be at Montsalvat in Eltham, tomorrow morning, 11.30am on the 21 st August. Please pray for our Church and for the Ministry Team as they adjust to a different season of transition. Be excited and prayerful for at least three of our church folk who are in conversation around baptism. If baptism is something that you have been considering, please contact one of the ministry team. Please continue to pray for Year 10s, 11s and 12s as this next six week period starts and they journey towards the end of the year. Give thanks for the new initiative and those involved with the Breakfast Club at Eastwood Primary School where last week we connected with children. Give thanks and pray for the opportunities to engage with children, and to develop ongoing relationships. Please pray for John and Chris as they move into season of transition and an opportunity to enjoy well earned holidays. Please pray for Chris s health as they look forward to this holiday. Pray for the upcoming Family Fun night, Kids Activity Day, and the Community Fete. All great opportunities to share with our community. Pray for those caught up in the riots in Charlottesville. Please pray for wisdom for the leaders of USA and North Korea.

4 WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY : 12.30pm-2pm Back again this week until the end of the term to be led by Julia Fullerton. Theme: Creation and Re-Creation! SUNDAY ROAST The next Sunday Roast will be on Sunday, 27th August, immediately following the morning service. This is for any seniors who may live alone and rarely cook a roast dinner for themselves, and wish to enjoy a time of fellowship. The cost is $ Please put your name on the Response Sheet on the noticeboard. SPECIAL COMMUNION SERVICE: There will be a Special Communion Service on Monday, 4th September at 1.30pm. This is a service specifically designed for people who cannot make regular Sunday worship, and particularly those who may be frail aged, or find crowds difficult. All welcome.
