1 The Salvation Army Canberra City Oasis NOVEMBER 2010 salvos.org.au/canberracityoasis Ph: Fax: Cnr Elouera and Fawkner Sts, Braddon GPO Box 435 Canberra 2601 Dear friends, A Celebration for the life of Elizabeth (Beth) Stoodley was held at Canberra City Oasis Corps on Tuesday 2 November It was wonderful to see so many present (over 200) to give God the Glory and honour for a life well lived. Here are some memories of Beth captured at the service: A woman of prayer and great faith A friend An authentic woman of God She had a strong love of family A patient listener Well ordered Loved young people Gentle, gracious, a wise counsellor Elegant, merciful, compassionate A beautiful person inside and out Captain Donna Evans in her message reminded us of two hopes that were Beth s. The Hope of transformation by Jesus Christ in this life. We have seen this evidenced in Beth s life. Also the Hope of Resurrection (1 Thessalonians 4:13 and 1 Corinthians 6:14). Both hopes can be ours too May God bless you richly, Captains Tim & Laura & Majors Peter and Eileen Captain Tim Gittins Mob: tim.gittins@aue.salvationarmy.org Major Peter Holley Mob: peter.holley@aue.salvationarmy.org Captain Laura Gittins Mob: laura.gittins@aue.salvationarmy.org Major Eileen Holley Mob: eileen.holley@aue.salvationarmy.org

Children can explore God s Word themselves & apply His truth to their lives. Some will become friends with Jesus. YOU CAN HELP BY: Financial support for the initial supply of Bibles throughout the territory. (Donations can be made at your local Salvos) Families, individuals or corps groups buy a Bible a month. See Captain Tim today for more details. Psalm 78 v 4 says.. tell the next generation the amazing things God has done. 6 Are you unhappy with your elected parliament? If so this article may be helpful for you. Shaping The Nation: Ten Words on How Christians Can Influence Politics (an abridged version) by Hon Kevin Andrews MP First, Christians should pray. For Christians prayer is all-powerful. Accordingly, all Christian endeavour in the political realm should be guided and aided by prayer. Second, Christians have a right and a duty - to be heard in the public square. The Christian voice is as valid as any other in the public square. In a democracy, all citizens have the right indeed, the responsibility to voice their thoughts in the polity. Given the underlying Christian basis for much of western civilisation, Christians have a duty to engage in public debate. Third, Christians should adopt a principled approach to public affairs. Christianity professes a set of values about how we should live together. Love of neighbour, charity, respect, toleration, and justice are central to Christianity. Christians should respect those values in any political campaign in which they are engaged, otherwise their actions betray the very civilisation they seek to foster. Fourth, Christians should affirm public office as a noble calling. This is not to say that public officials always act nobly. But it is to recognise that public office is a service to the community which involves stewardship of the commonwealth of the nation. I have the sense on occasions that some Christians regard politics as unclean or unsavoury, and therefore to be shunned: Better to proclaim the Christian message with purity than engage in the untidy, often chaotic world of politics. Fifth, Christians should understand the political system. Christians who wish their voice to be heard need to raise their interests with politicians. The most effective way of doing this is in person, yet few do so. In order of impact, a visit to a Member of Parliament far outweighs a letter. It involves a personal commitment of time and energy which is recognised. Equally, a hand-written letter has more impact than an , which can be easily generated and distributed widely. Sixth, Christians should know what they want to achieve. Politics is about actions. Indeed, it is the fate of public officials to be judged by outcomes, not intentions. Christians need to know what they want to achieve. This may sound obvious, but I have observed over the years that many groups have only vague ideas of what they want, without precise goals. You need to know what success looks like. Seventh, Christians need to be well-researched and relevant to be persuasive. This means that Christians need to be engaged in the policy debates. However, they need to employ the appropriate expertise. Religious leaders can appeal to moral and ethical reasons for certain behaviours and courses of action. That is their expertise. However, if they wish to be engaged in the policy detail, they need to use the expertise of the particular subject matter. Eighth, Christians should use effective political measures. An effective political campaign needs to use appropriate language, arguments and measures. What will move votes is the ultimate question. The answer is quite simple: a significantly large number of constituents making their views known directly to their Members of Parliament. This means that Christians need to be organised if they are to have an impact.

7 Ninth, Christians need to be collaborative. Building coalitions of supporters is a central task in most political campaigns. It doesn t mean that real differences, in belief for example, should be put aside. They need to be recognised and named in any effective coalition-building exercise. But common causes can be developed from open, frank and trusting conversations. Tenth, Christians need to persevere. William Wilberforce battle to abolish the slave trade lasted a political lifetime with many setbacks along the way. An effective voice requires perseverance. As Winston Churchill famously said: Never, ever, ever, ever give up. Conclusion Christians need to have a voice in the public square if Christian values are to be reflected in the policies of elected governments. This requires a clear vision, a plan of action, commitment, organisation, perseverance, and collaboration. It requires engagement with the political system. Most of all, it requires a belief that our way of life and our society has been enhanced by Christianity and will continue to be so in the future. To read the complete article go to During November and December our Division is praying 24/7 that means someone somewhere is intentionally praying 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Our corps has been allocated the dates of the 10th to the 12th December to pray. We want to encourage everyone to get involved with this. We will start with a prayer concert on the 10th December at 6.30pm, then from 8pm we would like to aim to have someone praying every hour over the weekend. You can do this in your own home, down by the lake up, on top of Mount Ainslie wherever it suits you! We will provide you with some resources to help you in your praying and there will be a roster available shortly that you can put your name down on so that we can aim to get the whole weekend covered in prayer! (Please note, there will not be a room made available at Canberra City Oasis specifically for prayer due to the Corps Officers being away at the Commissioning weekend.)
