[Photo: Fred Happy] Recently, coming out of church in the morning, I gave a hand to the folks from the Kingston Food Bank loading up their van with food donations made by parishioners. I was struck by the Charity our parish expresses to the community through our generous donations to this organization, no doubt some of these donations made by our own members of the Knights of Columbus. When we were finished I counted over 90 bags of food. The Lenten season highlights for us the opportunities where we can express Charity to those that we meet and in situations we encounter in our daily lives. In a Papal Letter by Pope Benedict XVI, he touches on this theme: The Lenten season offers us once again an opportunity to reflect upon the very heart of Christian life: charity. This is a favourable time to renew our journey of faith, both as individuals and as a community, with the help of the word of God and the sacraments. His Holiness concludes with, - In a world which demands of Christians a renewed witness of love and fidelity to the Lord, may all of us feel the urgent need to anticipate one another in charity, service and good works (cf. Heb 6:10). This appeal is particularly pressing in this holy season of preparation for Easter.. On a final note, during this Year of Faith, in a recent edition of the Ontario State Bulletin, our State Chaplain writes, We are invited to open the door to Christ and enter into a renewed and deeper relationship with the Lord. This year will provide many opportunities to evangelize and energize our parishes, Catholic organizations, homes, schools and community. I know that the Knights of Columbus are constantly opening the doors to Christ to others by the many acts of charity, unity, fraternity, volunteerism and the many efforts to defend life. Your Council, with our Chaplain, will be announcing shortly a Parish and Knights-based programme for the month of May centred on Pro-Life. Watch our Parish bulletin for further information. To my Brother Knights and their Families and Friends, may I extend to each a Charity-filled Lenten season and a Joyous and Blessed Easter. Vivat Jesus! March April 2013 Pg. 1 of 16

2 CHAPLAIN S REMARKS Father Leo Byrne Dear Brother Knights, There are still a few weeks of Lent remaining in I offer then, a reminder to all of us, to dust off those three important areas of Lent - Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Prayer opens us to more than ourselves, allowing us to listen to the God who is constantly loving and calling us. Fasting should put us in touch with the hungry of the world and can be combined with an awareness of, and sensitivity to, those who hunger for self-respect, love and self-worth. Almsgiving relates to the abundance we have and how we share with others. We have plenty of friends and family so the call to be conscious of those who are alone in this world. I will call this to mind as my reason to have hope. The favours of the Lord are not exhausted. God s mercy is never spent. It is renewed each morning so great is God s faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:21-23) Fraternally, Father Leo Byrne Chaplain Knight of the Year Shaun Tymchuk receiving his award from GK Terry Finn Family of the Year Connie and Tony Vella with GK Terry Finn More on the award recipients in a special issue on the Ladies Appreciation Night coming soon! 3 PRO-LIFE CORNER Br. David Caracciolo The main Pro-Life event in the near future is the March for Life in Ottawa on Thursday, 9 th May. In previous years, Knights from the district have travelled to Ottawa to take part in the March, and the 4 th Degree members have been in their regalia. Campaign Life Coalition has organized a bus, starting from St. Joseph s Church, and for the past two years Holy Cross School had another bus going to Ottawa. This year our District Deputy, Bill Coppens, is urging that Knights from all the Councils attend, and Council 9652 is considering a bus from St. Paul s. If you can make it, mark your calendar for this important event. Details will be available in the next Newsletter. A reminder from Val Dumais about an upcoming debate: Queen's Alive, the Pro-Life group at Queens, is hosting an Assisted Suicide debate on March 13, 2013 in the Biosciences Complex, Room 1101 between 7:30 and 9:30 pm. There is no cost. The debaters are: FOR Udo Schuklenk, Professor, Department of Philosophy, Queen s University AGAINST - Alex Schadenberg, Executive Director, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition. At the March Business Meeting, members will be asked to agree to a donation to Queen s Alive for this event. So, mark your calendars again for event on the issue of the Right to Life. Vivat Jesus! FINANCIAL SECRETARY S REMARKS Br. Dale Tuepah Brother Knights, Our Lenten obligation not only includes penance & preparation towards the Easter joy of the Risen Lord. It should also commit us to be active in "Works of Charity" in parish & community. Please welcome, Chris Stewart, our newest member, and his wife Bonnie, to Council Our membership is now at 157. We have 98 associate, 57 insurance, 2 inactive. This consists of 15 Honorary Life, 5 Honorary, & 1 Disabled. With active members; 39-4th Degree, 108-3rd Degree, & 8-2nd Degree. For those members that still owe their 2013 dues, please submit ASAP to be current. Vivat Jesus! March April 2013 Pg. 3 of 16

4 Membership Matters DGK Scott Arnold Brother Knights, As I look to the future and try to envision what shape our council will have in 2014 and beyond, I find myself perplexed with questions. How do we stimulate a greater involvement in our council and retain the same? How do we recruit younger members? How do we interact with the members we presently have? These of course are the beginnings of many questions. Enough cannot be said about the Order of which we are all a part. Each of us should carry the honor of being a brother Knight with great humility. As Practical Catholic gentlemen our duty is to continually explore our Faith and gives thanks to all that is good. At some time in the beginning of our journey as a Knight, we made a commitment to band together in the works of Charity. It is the duty to our Order to personally examine our commitment. I have often said and will say again, it is not my place or the place of any other Brother to judge how much or how little we give of ourselves. However this is something we must constantly explore at a personal level with God. I believe this ties back to our Faith journey. I am sure many of us have had a conversation with God in a prayerful silence. What a loving experience this can be. Often this allows us to examine our conscience and yes we can come out of this experience with an energized renewal. With all this being said, how do we stimulate greater involvement, recruit younger members and engage our present members? The answer is to ensure we personally have committed ourselves to the duty of God s will. I can tell each of us to go out and recruit a new member, and I will! However, how true to a commitment are we willing to give to that new member, if we are not a shining example for them to see? Please take the time this Lent and Easter season to grow in faith. I am convinced if we take this action our Council will not only grow, but will be a shining example of God s love for fellow man. Please watch for a future announcement of our next Open House to be held in early April. Consider inviting someone to this event that you would consider a strong Candidate into our Order. Vivat Jesus Arthritis Raffle Br. Howard Gallivan Our car raffle sales at the Cataraqui Centre for the week of January 07 netted us $ and the week of February 11 netted us $ Thanks to all those members who volunteered their precious time to achieve this. Brothers Val Dumais and Chris Roney who volunteered to manage these sales did a GREAT JOB. Brother Dale Tuepah who manages our membership sales reports that 130 books have been distributed ($ potential revenue) and 32 books have been sold to date for revenue of $ However, only a small percentage of our council members contribute to this fund raising event. Perhaps you are not aware that this fund raising event is led by the Knights of Columbus of Ontario and every council is requested to participate. Through a joint effort, Brother Knights raise a substantial amount of money for many non-profit charitable organizations of which the Arthritis Society is a major one. Donations also go out to community/church programs, to education/research, bursaries/scholarships, Youth programs and Vocations. Those councils that participated last year were allowed to keep 28.4% of their Gross Receipts to fund their local charitable projects. This fund raising endeavour is of significant benefit to the charities we support in our community and those Knights who are able and do not contribute should realize they are called to Charitable works especially during this Lenten season. It is believed that our non-contributing Knights are not conscious of not contributing. They don t see or hear about the tickets, and so, Out of sight, out of mind. During a meeting of the Council s fund raising committee, it was agreed that as Chairman of the Arthritis Car Raffle Fund Raiser, it would be appropriate for me to call non contributing Knights in a friendly manner to remind them of their oversight and ask them to purchase a book of tickets for $ It is not a task that I look forward to doing. O Neill School in Napanee (and a member of Council 9652), asked Council 7883 (St. Patrick s, Napanee) to re-start the Knights BBFT programme which had lapsed. Eric Lawson, a former member of Council 9652, passed on the request, and Shaun Tymchuk took a group to Napanee. Council 7883 had several members who could help, and the mix turned out very well, as seen from the photos above. March April 2013 Pg. 7 of 16

8 Squires Circle Revival Br. David Caracciolo Our goal in re-starting Squires is to help boys to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through a program of fun, service and spiritual activities. Squires is open to Catholic boys ages 10-17, and the Counselors are member of the Knights. Chris Roney and Andrew McAdoo have attended workshops on the Squires, and will be involved when recruitment starts sometime in April My own experience with Squires started when my son, Brandon, was 11 years old. I'd been a Knight for many years, but not active because of our young family. When I accepted an invitation to bring Brandon to Squires it also got me active again with the Knights. Brandon really enjoyed being a Squire: the activities, the friendships, and the events we attended. My wife also became more supportive of the Knights because she saw the benefits to our family. Fast forward to 2012 and the need for a Squires program today remains strong. Squires will give boys opportunities to participate in activities, build self-esteem through service, practice leadership and grow their faith, all under the guidance of strong Catholic men. Please consider bringing your son, and his friends. Maybe even volunteer yourself as a leader / counselor. 13 A contribution from Brother Walter Genereux THE AWAKENING A time comes in your life when you finally get it... when in the midst of all your fears and insanity you stop dead in your tracks, and somewhere the voice in your head cries out: ENOUGH! You awaken to the fact that you are not perfect and that not everyone will always love, appreciate or approve of who or what you are... and that s OK. You stop complaining and blaming other people for the things they did to you (or didn t do for you)... You stop judging and pointing fingers and you begin to accept people as they are... You learn to open up to new worlds and to different points of view. You learn that it is truly in giving that we receive. You learn that you don t know everything, that it is not your job to save the world and that you can t teach a pig to sing. Then you learn about love: romantic love and familiar love. And you learn that alone does not mean lonely. You also stop working so hard at putting your feelings aside, smoothing things over and ignoring your needs. You come to the realization that you deserve to be treated with love, kindness, sensitivity and respect,... And you learn that your body is your temple, and you begin to care for it and treat it with respect. You learn that for the most part in life, you get what you believe you deserve... You learn that anything worth achieveing is worth working for... You learn that the only thing your must truly fear is FEAR itself. And you learn to deal with evil in its most primal state: the ego. You learn to be thankful for and take comfort in many of the simple things we take for granted. Slowly, you begin to take responsibility for your self by yourself, and you make yourself a promise never, ever to settle for less than your heart s desire. Finally, with courage in your heart, you take a deep breath and you begin to design the life that you want to live as best as you can. Author Unknown! [Ed. 14 Editor s Note Br. Aubert Pereira Correction: When doing the January-February issue of the Knightly News, two of the photographs had incorrect captions, referring to the Steak BBQ. This should have been the Parish Family Fun Festival in November, where the Knights prepared the hot dogs at lunch time. The two photos were in the middle of Pg. 7. In January, the Council was designated the Ministry of the Month with a corresponding display on the board in the gathering space. A photo of the board is shown on Pg. 6 of this issue, with a write-up on various activities of the Council. Your Editor heard a comment to the effect,. didn t know the Knights did so much Members should be proud to belong to such an active Council. So, come out and get involved to help make it better.
