1 St. Paul the Apostle Council 9652 September-October 2016 Mission Statement We, the Knights of Columbus, St. Paul the Apostle Council 9652, strive to deepen our relationship with Christ and each other by promoting God s work. We support our Bishop, Priests and Community by holding fast to our mission as Catholic laymen. We provide support to widows and children of deceased members who die an untimely death, and foster fraternal spirit. Instill in us and all people a sense of the sacredness of every human life. GRAND KNIGHT S REMARKS A Time of Change Br. Ray Smith After an uneventful summer, the pace of Council activities picks up, and with it the need for members to get involved. September is a time of many changes. For many families this includes a first day at school, first day of university or college often away from home. Along with changes come challenges, personal and otherwise. At our Council level, we are heading into what is arguably the busiest time of our fraternal year. We have many different programs that run practically at the same time, and as always we need feet on the ground to make these things happen. Please give some thought to the calls for help that will come from our various program leaders. We have: a Holy Family Icon travelling through the area a Parish Pub Night and a Spaghetti Supper coming up, the Nativity Exhibition and the Nativity Scene for the church, the State Charities Raffle, the Keep Christ in Christmas card sales... the list goes on. We are looking for volunteers, yes, and we are looking for three Activities Directors as well: Family, Community and Culture of Life. If you are interested in learning more or becoming a Director for our Council, please let me know. Vivat Jesus! 2 Chaplain s Remarks Father Leo Byrne Dear Brother Knights, My plan as shared with you at the last General meeting is to more fully engage the members in the first 15 minutes of spirituality at the General Meetings. I will be calling on some to present perhaps in a few minutes share your faith journey. In August I presented the two Bible quotes, one for the past and one for the future. Past: I the Lord your God has carried you as one carries a child all along the road you have travelled until you reached this place. Future: For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. We will return to this at our September meeting. [From Nick DaCosta, England] The Myriad Uses of UP and Puns There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.' We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP. To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. More uses of UP in the next Knightly News. Puns -- for the educated mind! We re going on a class trip to the Coca Cola factory. I hope there s no pop quiz. What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabulary? A thesaurus. Now that we are near the start of a new school year, our Council BBQ teams have already receive invitations to work at Mother Teresa and Ste. Marguerite Schools.

5 Now that we are near the start of a new school year, our Council BBQ teams have already receive invitations to work at Mother Teresa and Ste. Marguerite Schools. This builds on the relationship our Council has with schools in our parish, due in no small part to the efforts of Shaun Tymchuk, the Council Youth Director. Shaun has worked tirelessly on the Basketball Free Throw Competition (BBFT) in the schools, on the Substance Abuse Poster Programme and the Nativity Exhibition, which he took over following the death of Tony Vella. Take note that the BBFT and Poster contests take place late this year and early next year. Details forthcoming, but keep an ear tuned for these events and try to find the time to help, if possible. In addition, Shaun is the Chair of the annual Spaghetti Supper, another fundraiser for the Council. This will take place on Sat 19th November. Stephen Henderson The Value of Membership Referrals As a professional insurance agent, one of the things I appreciate most is when one of my brother Knight clients or his wife refers another member to me. This is a great endorsement of the service I provided. It tells me that they were so pleased with what I helped them accomplish that they want me to help others achieve the same level of financial safety and security. When I meet with you, please pass along the names of those who might be able to benefit from the analysis that I provide. Similarly, there is no stronger membership recruiting tool than the referral. How many of us know an eligible Catholic male who is not a member of the Knights of Columbus? Do you have Catholic family or friends, local or not, who have yet to join? Most likely, they ve never been asked and don t know enough about the Order to seek out membership on their own. If you have names of potential members, please pass them along to me or your Grand Knight. Let us know if we can use your name when we contact the gentlemen in question. It s always more effective to tell a candidate for membership that he was recommended by a current member, especially someone he knows. Don t worry if the candidate is outside the area I serve or beyond the district of the local councils, we can make sure we put these future members in touch with the right people in their communities. New members are the lifeblood of the Order. All the good deeds done by the Order are driven by the members. Over the past decade, Knights have given more than $1.55 billion to charity and provided in excess of 673 million hours of service. 10 Editor s Note Br. Aubert Pereira July and August have proved to be months with little activity within Council Thus, photo opportunities have been limited and the size of this Newsletter reduced. The 2016 Seminarian Dinner was the August highlight. The Bi-Annual Parish Pub Night is being held on Saturday 29th October. This is the 5th such Pub Night (started by Joyce Davies) and has proved to be a very popular function. Tickets goon sale the weekends of the 15/16 and 22/23 October. Advance ticket sales only - no sales at the door. Poster on Pg. 6 Also on Saturday 1st October, Blessed Sacrament Council holds its annual Oktoberfest. This is always an enjoyable event, and well worth your support (see Pg. 7 for details) September brings school BBQs and the Council BBQ crews have been asked to assist. Youth liaison is an important to the Council and the parish. So, please help as much as you can. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, celebrating with your families. And, when Halloween rolls round, hope the youngsters have a happy and safe trick or treat evening. Vivat Jesus!
