1 Newsletter Number 35 15th November 2018 Loving God, we are not afraid, you go before us always. You are near, you stand beside us. Your hand is upon us, protecting us from harm. You lead us in ways everlasting. Welcome Last week, we welcomed Helen and her parents to our school community. Helen has joined our Prep class and she is quickly settling into our school routine. I know that everyone has already made Helen and her parents feel so welcome. ST BENEDICT S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL 3 9 CENTRAL AVENUE BURWOOD St Benedict s Primary School Burwood During our Information Evenings, parents were also asked to nominate an address that they were happy to have shared on a friendship list for their child s class. Without parental or caregiver consent to share addresses, we are unable to share any contact details with other members of our community. If you were Leadership Day Election Day Each Election Day, St Ben s is a polling booth and this is also a great opportunity for us to fundraise for our wonderful school. On Saturday the 24th November, we will be holding a cake stall and sausage sizzle, including egg and bacon rolls during the morning rush. In order to support our cake stall, each family is encouraged to bake a cake, slice, treat or cupcakes for our stall. We understand that this is a busy time of the year, however if you are able to make an item for our stall, please use the bag or tray together with the ingredient tag that will be sent home with your child tomorrow. Any items for sale can be dropped off at the staffroom from 7:30am on Saturday morning. If you are able to assist on our stall or sausage sizzle throughout the day, please contact me or Annmaree Hoy, Gen Walton, Sarah Wearne or Emma Quick. This year, the Mobile Coffee Mission will also be joining us. This van, run by members of our Parish community, donates a specific amount per cup sold to St Vincent de Paul. So whilst you are voting and buying an egg and bacon roll, sausage or cake, you can buy a coffee and support one of our local charities. Find out more about the Mobile Coffee Mission at School Disco Our annual School Disco to celebrate the end of the year and Christmas will be held on Thursday 6th December. This evening is a St Ben s tradition and is a great opportunity for all of our families to celebrate our school year together. It is also a great time to meet up with families who have attended St Ben s and are still part of our wider community. Please see the more detailed information further in our newsletter in relation to times and bookings.

2 Sports Day Tomorrow is our School Sports Day. All students are asked to wear their sport uniform and a coloured t-shirt to represent their house colour. A permission note for our sports was sent home earlier in the term and these signed notes are required for our students to walk to Burwood Reserve. Thank you to our parents who have volunteered to walk with us and assist us with our sports. It will a great day and I look forward to sharing our results and photos from the day in our newsletter next week. NB: Could we ask that each child have a safety pin pinned to their sports top tomorrow. 3 Education in Faith Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B Gospel: Mark 13:24-32 Watch for the signs of the coming of the Kingdom Gospel Reflection The whole of chapter 13 in the Gospel of Mark is devoted to a discourse about the future. In the section preceding this week s passage, Jesus has foretold the destruction of the Temple and the fall of Jerusalem. He has also predicted war on a massive scale and the persecution of his followers. Now, in this passage, Jesus predicts the return of the Son of Man and the fulfilment of the kingdom of God. Why does the gospel include such an extended description of the collapse of the world as it was? Because that s exactly what was going on around the community of this gospel writer! This gospel is understood to have been written somewhere in the period CE. In the year 70 CE the city of Jerusalem was besieged by Roman troops who stormed the city and destroyed it. As a sign of complete disdain for the people of Jerusalem and a mark of overwhelming victory, the Romans burnt and completely destroyed the Temple in the heart of Jerusalem. For the entire Jewish community, this was absolute devastation. The destruction of the Temple surely marked the coming of the end times the day of judgment and completion of this world. The community gathered around this gospel writer were no less affected. On top of this, the Roman Emperors were reaching new heights (or depths) in their persecution of the followers of Jesus. In the midst of this despair and fear, the followers of Jesus are challenged to remember the teachings of the one they follow. This passage is written for them as an encouragement to not give up in the face of what appears to be overwhelming odds. It is a call to hope. Although we can understand the context in which it was originally written, we are also challenged to apply its message of hope and perseverance to our own lives. Historical Context 70 CE In 66 CE a Jewish revolt against Roman occupation began in Caesarea and soon spread to most of the country. By the year 68 the sheer weight of Roman numbers had stamped out a lot of the rebellion. The leaders of the revolt rallied again in Jerusalem and in the year 70 the Roman armies laid siege to the city for several months. Finally, Titus, the emperor Vespasian s son, led an assault on the city and the Romans ransacked and burnt the entire city. The treasures of the Temple were looted and the Temple itself the very centre of Jewish religion was destroyed. Living the Gospel People of Hope Whilst the community who were the intended audience of the Gospel of Mark were expecting the return of Jesus and the end times to occur during their lifetimes, nearly two thousand years later we realise that wasn t the case. Today, as in Mark s time, many people approach the future and change with fear and apprehension. As Christian people we are called to be optimistic and hopeful as we approach the future. We know that God is good, that God loves us unconditionally and that God has a dream for us. That is the simple basis of Christian hope. 4 Learning and Teaching Junior News The recent weeks in the Junior school have provided a fun and exciting atmosphere as we delve deeper into the unit of Prayer in Religion. We have been very fortunate to have Father Dan come into our classrooms to share stories and laughter with us. Through this experience, our students developed a deeper understanding of prayer and we are now all looking forward to our Prayers in Pyjamas night as a celebration of our learning with you. We look forward to seeing you there. If you have not responded, please ensure you reply as soon as possible to help with planning and catering. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Jess and Belinda In Maths, we have completed our unit on Mass as students explored the concept of hefting and the use of scales to informally measure different items from around the room. We have begun to explore Patterns this week and will be creating both growing and repeating patterns. During English, our students have been consolidating their understanding of recounts and narratives and the One/Twos have also been looking at the persuasive writing genre. We are all continuing to develop our reading comprehension, looking at inferring character s feelings as well. We are also continuing to explore grammar and punctuation within our reading and writing. We have been looking at the difference between informative and imaginative texts, including the features of both. In Inquiry, our students have been exploring Dreaming Stories, our world around us and how people communicate in different ways. Alongside this, our students have been investigating famous artworks from different perspectives. We have looked at Monet and Van Gogh and this week we have begun exploring Picasso. We have created our own versions of some famous artworks and looked at the similarities and differences between these artworks. In Science we are investigating Physical Sciences and looking at light and sound. Our students have explored the different sounds that toys make and the different sounds that are around us. We are now beginning to look at the sun as a source of light.

5 Learning and Teaching cont d Student Involvement in School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) Last year, St Ben s began our SWPBS journey with the launch of our HEROES expectations (Honour Responsibility, Expect Respect, Remember Resilience, Offer Support and Ensure Safety). This year, a focus of our SWPBS has been increasing our student involvement and engagement. We have implemented our assembly raffle winners, which each week gains student interest to see who our lucky winners are and what each child has won. Our whole school reward has also deepened our student engagement - how close can we get to our next reward? As well as this, we have involved our Student Representative Council in the planning and implementation of our SWPBS. Each fortnight, our SRC members meet and discuss current school successes and the areas that we need to work on in the future. It is then decided by our SRC members which area of focus we need to have next based off our HEROES behaviour expectations. These meetings are a fantastic way for our students to discuss the school yard with others from across the school and see what similar patterns we are seeing. Our SRC members also have the exciting task of choosing our whole school rewards when the time presents!
