Newsletter Number th August 2017 Mary, Queen of Peace, we entrust our lives to you. Shelter us from all that may cause us harm. Teach us to live in peace, to be compassionate and generous people. Inspire us to act justly, to raise up the lowly and to support all those in need. We ask this prayer in Jesus name. Amen. St Benedict s Catholic Primary School Burwood 3 9 Central Avenue, Burwood St Benedict's Primary School Burwood stbenedictsburwood First Communion Congratulations to all of our children who received First Communion and received a blessing last Sunday. Our Mass was a lovely celebration for our school and parish communities. Thank you to Sophie Campbell, Grace Fuge and Lorraine Walker for their preparation of the children, to Mary Brooks for preparing our Mass, certificates and choir and to Grace Piva for printing our Mass booklets. As a community, we also need to thank Father Dave and Father Rem for celebrating our Mass and our wonderful choir for leading our singing throughout the Mass. Our children enjoyed their Reflection Day last Friday where they participated in different activities to further develop their understanding of the Sacrament. These activities included bread making. Thank you to Mary L, Jodee K and Karen P for making the bread with the children. Our celebrations concluded on Monday with a party for our children to celebrate their continued faith journey. Thank you to our P & F for supplying the children s lovely ice-cream cake for this celebration. School Improvement Surveys Today, each family will receive an envelope from Insight SRC containing log on details for our annual School Improvement Surveys. These surveys are an important way for us as a school to gain feedback in a number of areas and to also plan for the year ahead and so I ask all families to complete the survey. All of our Year Three to Six children will complete the surveys during school time and all staff also complete surveys. By all stakeholders completing these surveys, we receive quality feedback that we can act upon. The surveys open on Monday 21st August and close on Friday 8th September. If you have any questions or difficulties with the survey, please contact me.

Book Week Celebrations This week we have celebrated Book Week with a visit from author Susan Berran. Susan s books are listed on the Premier s Reading Challenge list and we were fortunate to receive copies of her books after her visit. Children from Years Three to Six who have a passion for writing were given the opportunity to work with Susan in the morning session and then each year level participated in a workshop with her. All of our children enjoyed this experience and also learnt about the writing process. Thank you to Regina Balbata for organising this incursion. I am looking forward to our Grandparents and Special Friends Afternoon and Book Week Parade this Friday. All grandparents and special friends are welcome to join us in classrooms from 2pm to share some reading, work and to have a look at our beautiful classrooms. All of our children have been organised into family groups for the afternoon and we will have a list of the rooms each family will be in at the office. Please enter the school through the front entrance, as we will keep our main gates locked until the end of the day. At 2:45pm all visitors are welcome to join us for our Book Week Parade in the hall. All children, staff and parents are invited to come dressed as their favourite book character and then parade around our hall. The children are able to wear their costumes all day or we can assist them to change into their costumes later in the day if required. If your child is not wearing a costume, I ask that he/she wears school uniform on Friday. End of Year As we progress through Term Three, we have begun to make plans for our end of year celebrations. This year our school disco will be held in the second last week of term and Graduation will be held on the second last day of term with all students finishing school on Tuesday 19th December at 3:15pm. Last week in the newsletter, these dates were added to the calendar. Our Graduation has moved from the Tuesday evening to the Monday evening and I apologise for any difficulties this change may cause. NAPLAN This week we were able to view our 2017 NAPLAN results. As a leadership team, we have begun to analyse them and determine our learning and teaching plan for the future. I look forward to sharing this information in relation to our achievements with you in future newsletters. Earn and Learn Each family has received an Earn and Learn sticker sheet. Earn and Learn is an initiative run by Woolworths and and Modern Teaching Aids. For every $10 spent, you will receive one sticker. Completed sticker sheets can be placed in the box in our office foyer and additional sticker charts can also be collected from the office. Our school also has a collection box at the Ashburton Woolworths on the corner of Warrigal Rd and High St. Orange Sky Our donations to Orange Sky Laundry were greatly appreciated and our article in the local paper also showed our local community what amazing things our school is doing. We had one local resident contact us to congratulate us on this fundraising and also to ask about making further donations. This lovely lady dropped in a number of toiletry products and we have begun a new basket of goods that we will also donate to Orange Sky. If you would like to make any further donations, please drop them off at the office. Choir Today our school choir participated in an event with other local primary schools at Wattle Park Primary School. This event is a wonderful way for our children to showcase their talents and to also hear and learn from other choirs. Thank you to Mary Brooks for organising this for our choir and also to the parents who assisted with walking to the children to and from the event. LSL This term we have a number of staff who will be enjoying some well-deserved long service leave. We wish Daniel McNairn a wonderful trip in Canada and America, Karen Dermietzel a wonderful trip through Europe, Regina Balbata a wonderful trip through Scandanavia and Ro O Dwyer a wonderful trip through Europe. Daniel commenced his leave this week until the end of term and Regina begins her leave this Friday until Monday 18th September. Karen commences her leave on Wednesday 23rd August until Friday 15th

September and Grace Piva will be working fulltime in our office whilst Karen is on leave. Ro will commence her leave on Monday 11th September and return to school at the beginning of Term Four. I will send a letter to all of One/Two O families early next week to inform you of who will be replacing Ro during these weeks. P & F Events I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our Trivia Night this Saturday night. The theme of Back to School is sure to provide some interesting outfits and it promises to be a good night. Our second event is our Father s Day Breakfast. What is better than an egg and bacon roll and coffee to start your day? Tickets for both events can be made through CDF Pay. Tuckshop Congratulations to our wonderful parents who organise and work in our tuckshop each week. Whitehorse Council recently visited our tuckshop to audit our practices and our wonderful team passed with flying colours! As she was leaving, the Food Safety Officer from Whitehorse City Council, mentioned that I would receive a report but it would be blank as there are no areas to improve on. Thank you to Jacqui T and Kate P for all of their work to make our canteen what it is and also to all of the wonderful parents who volunteer each week. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lou, Tammie, Sophie (Five/Six SP) and Michael (Three/Four GL) at this time on the passing last Thursday of Lou s father Antonio. Meredith Bennett Principal

Education in Faith The Year Four s First Holy Communion was a beautiful celebration on Sunday. Thank you to all who were involved in the preparation of the children and the celebration itself. Feast of the Assumption The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of only two Holy Days of Obligation (the other is Christmas Day). This feast celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lady being taken body and soul into heaven. Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28 Gospel Reflection This week s gospel provides a fascinating illustration of Jesus response to those in need. Jesus has travelled to the area of Tyre and Sidon part of modern day Lebanon. He was physically removing himself from the place of his very active ministry and taking a break. When the Canaanite woman approaches Jesus and his disciples, she is an interruption; a nuisance. Jesus is very abrupt with her. He tells her simply that his ministry is to the house of Israel the Jews and is not for her. But the woman is persistent and again asks Jesus to help her. Jesus is even more abrupt and tells her that it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs. Through this use of metaphor, Jesus refers to the children of Israel (the Jews) and to the gentiles and pagans sometimes referred to as dogs to reflect their lowly status in the eyes of the Jewish tradition. Still the woman persists and turns Jesus metaphor back on him, saying that even the dogs get to eat the scraps that fall from the table. The woman s persistence and faith pay off. Jesus is moved by her faith and through that faith heals the woman s daughter. Despite his initial abruptness and reluctance, Jesus responds with compassion to the woman s request. It is as though she needed to demonstrate that she was really serious and that she did in fact believe that Jesus could make a difference in her life and the life of her daughter. This is an important story in Matthew s gospel. This gospel was written predominantly for Jewish Christians but this story reveals that the ministry of Jesus and the reign of God is open to anyone who believes. From the perspective of... A disciple. As we passed through a little village near Sidon this Canaanite woman suddenly started calling on the master to help her daughter. We all expected the master to help her out as usual but he really put her in her place! He told her that his ministry was not for pagans like her. That should have stopped her, but she kept on and on, even turning the master s words back on him! She was so rude. We were about to push her out of the way so that the master could move on when he suddenly told her that her faith was great and that her daughter was better. Great faith? A Canaanite? He never ceases to surprise us! Scriptural Context This passage sits in the middle of a group of three stories that make up Chapter 15 of Matthew s Gospel. The first story deals with Jesus challenging traditional views of cleanliness and uncleanliness one of the great separators between Jews and Gentiles. The story of this week s gospel follows with its account of the Canaanite woman s great faith being recognised. Finally, Matthew s gospel relates the story of the feeding of the four thousand a dramatic sign by Jesus of the open invitation to receive his message and ministry. The three stories, taken together, form a powerful chapter that makes clear that the message of Jesus is not exclusively for the Jews. 5 Learning and Teaching CURRICULUM AREA FOCUS: RELIGIOUS EDUCATION When we enter into a liturgical celebration we step into a deep mystery that has many layers to it. Catholics believe that the Holy Spirit makes Christ present in a very real and unique way in liturgical celebrations. In Eucharistic liturgies we believe that Christ is present in the people who are gathered to pray, in the Scriptures that are proclaimed, in the priest who leads the liturgy and in the communion elements of bread and wine. Catholic schools provide a liturgical catechesis for their students when they teach them about the structure and theology of the Mass and when they provide rich experiences of it regularly in the life of the school. (Sharkey, Educator s Guide to Catholic Identity, 2015) Students bring to the school a wide range of faith and spiritual experiences. These experiences are built upon in the curriculum as rich sources for further learning about God, religion and life. Parents have a particularly important part to play in the educating community, since it is to them that the primary and natural responsibility for their children s education belongs The constant aim of the school therefore, should be contact and dialogue with the pupils families in order to clarify with their indispensable collaboration that personalised approach which is needed for an educational project to be efficacious (The Catholic School on the Threshold of the Third Millennium, 1997). The Year Four students have recently celebrated their First Holy Communion. As a school this means that during this time students throughout the school are learning about the Eucharist. The Religious Education Framework has five content areas and learning about the Eucharist is taken from each of these content areas, although one content area may have a stronger focus than another. The Prayer, Liturgy and Sacrament content area is a strong focus for learning about the Eucharist, however there are direct links to be made with the content areas Jesus and Scripture, God, Religion and Life and Church and Community. Prayer, Liturgy and Sacrament Public rituals and personal prayer practices are central to many religious traditions, which serve to express the human quest for spiritual union (link to God, Religion and Life). Prayer, liturgy and sacraments are vital ways that the Church community meets, interacts with and responds to the Word of God. As the source and summit of the seven sacraments, participating in the Eucharist leads members deeper into the communal life of the Church and the mystery of Christ s life, death and resurrection, providing nourishment for Christian living (link to Scripture and Jesus). Prayer and sacraments promote an inner personal response and a commitment to the Church s mission to the world (link to Church and Community). Teachers facilitate dialogue at the intersection of student experiences of, and questions about, trust and mystery, and the Church s call to nurture a trusting relationship with God through prayer. This content area grapples with the questions, Where is God? In whom do I trust? The Religious Education Framework states that the Foundation to Level 2 students engage with the stories about Jesus, some of the teachings of Jesus, and learn about historical figures in the history of the family of God. They explore biblical texts as story and as sources of prayer and inspiration. They reflect on and develop relationship with God and self-understanding. The students from Year Three to Year 6 learn about the structures of the Church, its foundations in community and its mission of service in the world. They consider the actions of God in the world and begin to explore ways other religious traditions celebrate this. They learn about and may receive the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation, as well as learning about the seven sacraments and their significance for today. They engage with the liturgical celebrations of the church year and the life of the faith community, past and present, exploring ways they can participate in and contribute to the church. They continue to develop their personal prayer life, spirituality and appreciation for the sacred.

Learning and Teaching cont d BOOK WEEK Book week parade Friday 18 th August Tomorrow, Friday 18th August, we invite Grandparents or Special Friends to visit. This is a great opportunity for the children and their visitors to share books that they enjoy reading. This will be followed by a Book Week Parade.

Learning and Teaching cont d SCIENCE WEEK During the next two weeks at St Benedict s we will be focusing on the Science Week theme of FUTURE EARTH. How can we be stewards of creation to ensure the sustainability of our earth for future generations? The children will be engaged in activities that address this question. On Wednesday, 30 th August, the children will enjoy an incursion from The Gould League which will address some of these concerns. (More next week) Future Earth is a major international research platform providing the knowledge and support to accelerate transformations to a sustainable world. Launched in 2015, Future Earth is a 10-year initiative to advance global sustainability science, build capacity in this rapidly expanding area of research and provide an international research agenda to guide natural and social scientists working around the world. 10 Learning and Teaching cont d GRANDPARENTS DAY at ST BENEDICT S This Friday our Grandparent/Special Friends have been invited to visit our school this Friday. As part of our Book Week celebrations they will be visiting our classrooms, reading a book together and staying at our assembly to watch our Book Character Parade. Please join us for this wonderful experience. Grandparents, and other older relatives, bring aspects to a child's life that is different from the experiences parents provide for them. Perhaps one of the most obvious is the element of history. Grandparents come with a vast knowledge of life from another generation, but also a personal history of one's own family. They have lived a life very different to their grandchildren, and have usually seen many changes. Talking to grandparents about their lives, and even just picking up little snippets of information, can give a child insight into the past and the history of their own family tree. A child can obtain a sense of where they, themselves, have come from - a picture of where their own roots lie. What children can receive from healthy relationships with grandparents/special person? Someone who offers unconditional love A mentor who can help with problems Companionship and someone to talk to Someone who will stand beside them A window into their parent's childhood A sense of adventure Kindness, humour, and patience A zest for life Family traditions The ability to laugh at oneself Life lessons

Learning and Teaching cont d Year Three/Four News Religion Last week our Year Four students attended a Reflection Day along with students from our Parish. Students enjoyed responding to scripture with Father David and making bread with Mary Louis, Karen Palma and Jodee Kelly. We were so lucky to have Mary, Karen and Jodee give up their day to assist and guide our students through this very symbolic and special process. On Sunday our Year Four students from St Benedict s School and wider Parish received their First Communion and special blessings. Thank you to all of our families and our community for supporting our students throughout this journey and on the day. It was a great success and was followed with a special party on Monday to celebrate. Thank you to the parents who came along to help set up the party and celebrate with us all. There is a great picture storybook called, Spaghetti and Meatballs for All! written by Marilyn Burns which is a great book to read with your child to spark conversation about Perimeter and Area. Burwood Aged Care Our Year Three/Four students will be visiting residents of Burwood Aged Care every fortnight. We are always on the look out for volunteers who hold a current Working With Children Check to come along and assist us. If you are able to assist either class on the following dates please contact Sophie or Grace. Wednesday 23 rd August, 2pm-3:10pm (Three/Four G) Wednesday 6 th September 2pm-3:10pm (Three/Four C) Wednesday 20 th September 2pm-3:10pm (Three/Four G) Book Week and Grandparents Day! We look forward to seeing everyone on Friday dressed up for our theme, Escape To Everywhere. The afternoon will commence at 2pm with the opportunity for families to join students in their classrooms, followed by assembly at 2:45pm where we will commence our Book Week parade. We look forward to seeing all of the costumes on Friday! Can you guess what Miss Campbell and Miss Fuge are dressing up as? Kind regards, Grace and Sophie

Learning and Teaching cont d Year Five/Six News Well, we re half way through the third term and celebrating Book Week this week. Last week the children went to Box Hill Reserve to practise a variety of athletic events. This tied in beautifully with the World Olympic Events on at the moment and our work with decimals. We had a beautiful mass on Tuesday to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption and had Susan Berran, an author, visit the school on Wednesday and work with the children. It was a great visit. Many of the senior children participated in a choir competition today at Wattle Park Primary. They performed well and made our school proud. We are really looking forward to welcoming our Grandparents tomorrow and showing off our classrooms and costumes in our Book Week Parade. As our assemblies have been moved to alternate Friday afternoons, the Year Six children have started working with their buddy and the junior grades. The Three, Four and Five classes will be grouped and working with various teachers learning a new skill in that same time. We will begin our Bike Education Program on the Friday of Week 8 so start getting your bikes ready and up to scratch. We will require parent helpers on those days between and 1.00 so the children can work in small groups on their bike skills here at school. No other news for now. Stay warm and well. Deborah, Tanya and Mandy

Learning and Teaching cont d MULTIPLICATION MATHS STRATEGIES During the year the children have been learning different strategies to work out operational equations. They are taught these strategies, to enhance understanding, before they learn the algorithm. It gives the children more than one way to work out an equation or a word problem. This Week in the 3/4 Classroom news you will see examples of multiplication strategies that the children are being taught to use in mathematical problem solving. Have a look at the posters outlining these. Are Multiplication Facts Important to Learn? Fact strategies are considered a crucial second phase in a three-phase program for teaching students basic Math facts. The first phase is concept learning. Here, the goal is for students to understand the meaning of multiplication. In this phase, students focus on actions (i.e. groups of, equal parts, and building arrays ) that relate to multiplication concepts. An important instructional bridge that is often neglected between concept learning and memorization is the second phase, fact strategies. There are two goals in this phase. First, students need to recognize there are clusters of multiplication facts that relate in certain ways. Second, students need to understand those relationships. The third phase is memorisation of the basic facts. Here the goal is for students to master products so they can recall them efficiently and accurately, and retain them over time.
