If you were Leadership Day Newsletter Number 37 22nd November 2018 Loving God, may we lead with the light of justice, May we lead with the light of compassion, May we lead with the light of mercy, May we lead with the light of love. Amen. School Sports We were blessed with beautiful weather on Friday for our School Sports. It was great to have our whole school competing together and supporting each other throughout the morning. Congratulations to Clarke House for winning our overall sports and to Hall for winning our spirit award. Thank you to Mel Norton for organising our morning. All of her work allowed for our morning to run smoothly and for our students to fully participate in all activities. Thank you also to all of our parents who assisted throughout the morning with setting up tents, giving out ribbons and encouraging all of our students. Thank you to all of our staff for being part of this amazing morning and of course thank you to our wonderful students for their willingness to give everything a go, supporting each other and assisting with the pack up. The morning was a wonderful example of what makes St Ben s the amazing school that it is. Election Day Fundraising Last week, all families received information and cake trays to support our cake stall at our polling booth for the state election. All families are encouraged to bake a cake, slice or something similar and drop it into the staffroom from 7:30am on Saturday. These goodies will then be sold throughout the day. A flyer asking for volunteers to work at our stalls throughout the day was sent home this week. Thank you to all of our families who have already returned their note to say that they are able to volunteer. If you are able to assist for an hour or two on Saturday, please return your form to school tomorrow. Community Events It has been wonderful to have our students participate in a range of activities with schools within our wider community. Last week, a group of our Five/Six students played soccer against Hartwell Primary. This was a great way for our students to demonstrate their soccer skills and they were certainly able to celebrate with a score of 7 to 1. Yesterday a group of our Year Five/Six students attended Bike It! with Tanya Petersen. This community event also linked into our Year Five/Six Bike Ed sessions that have been held in recent weeks.

2 School Disco We are all looking forward to our annual School Disco which will be held on Thursday 6th December. A separate flyer asking for volunteers for the evening has been sent home today. Bookings can be made through CDF Pay. Please remember that all students must be accompanied by an adult whilst they are attending the disco. Italian Day Yesterday, all parents and caregivers received an electronic copy of information for Italian Day and all students have also received a hard copy of the note. Our Italian Day is always an amazing day and a great way to celebrate our language programme. Please use CDF Pay to order your child s pizza and gelato. Orders will close at 3:30pm on Tuesday 27th November. Prep Orientation and Information Evening Today was our final Prep orientation before we officially welcome our new Preps to St Ben s in It was wonderful to see our new students happily playing and interacting with our Year Five students. I look forward to welcoming all of our Prep parents and getting to know them better at our Prep Information Evening tonight. Please remember that next Friday, 30th November, is a school closure day. This day will allow our staff to begin the planning for next year. Meredith Bennett Principal

4 Education in Faith Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (Feast of Christ the King) Year B Gospel: John 18:33-37 Pilate questions Jesus about his identity. Gospel Reflection This week marks the end of the liturgical year. Next week, with the first week of Advent, we begin the new liturgical cycle. It is fitting that the Church concludes the liturgical year with the celebration of Christ the King. The conversation between Jesus and Pilate displays a lot of word play on the part of Jesus and quite a lot of confusion on the part of Pilate. The confusion stems from different perceptions of what it means to be a king. For Pilate, part of the most powerful political and military rule in the ancient world, the idea of a king was a threat. Claiming kingship was claiming authority and power that would inevitably lead to challenging the authority and power of Rome and, more directly, its representative in Palestine Pilate. Jesus, of course, had a completely different idea about ushering in a kingdom. He does indeed declare that he is a king and that is what leads us to today s feast of Christ the King. However, his intention is not to claim a position of power and authority. When we think back to Jesus teachings about the kingdom of God, we recall that he declares the people of highest status the first in the kingdom to be the lowliest of this world. It is the poor, the sick, the outcast, the children and the widows who will hold the highest places in the kingdom of God. In a kingdom like that, what does it mean to declare oneself king? The confusion about what it means to be a king that is captured in this interaction between Jesus and Pilate is the same confusion that we saw among the disciples as they came to terms with exactly what it means to be the Messiah. Living the Gospel Truth Jesus says to Pilate that he came into the world to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice. That is where today s gospel passage finishes but as the gospel continues on, Pilate famously asks Jesus What is truth? and the question is left dangling; unanswered. The truth Jesus has borne witness to is the truth of his whole life the revelation of God s love for humanity. It is for proclaiming this truth that Jesus is placed on trial and is brought before Pilate. Historical Context Christ the King Unfortunately, political and military images of kingship have played a dominating role in the Church since very early in its history. The very earliest Christians, or followers of the Way, did not conform to social and political hierarchies of their day. But when Emperor Constantine declared Christianity to be the official religion of the Roman Empire the structure of the Church quickly adopted the political and social structures of the empire. At times in history the Pope has adopted a regal status and led huge armies into battle. Many of these structures persist today and we sometimes struggle to recapture Jesus intention when he declared himself a king. Have you thought? The Kingdom of God When Jesus speaks about the Kingdom of God he never gives a particularly clear picture of what he means. He usually refers to the kingdom with metaphoric language ( the kingdom of God is like ) and often the kingdom is defined by what it is not. The kingdom is also a real contradiction: it is here and now and yet it is still to come; it is almost impossible for some to enter the kingdom while others are assured a place; it is within us and in our hearts and yet is a great banquet to which all are invited. 5 Learning and Teaching The Australian Mathematics Competition is a competition run by the Australian Mathematics Trust for Australian students from Year Three to Year Twelve. Twenty-three students from St Ben s completed the testing and were awarded certificates in the following categories.: 9 CREDIT 13 PROFICIENCY 1 PARTICIPATION Congratulations to the following Year Three - Year Six students who achieved excellent results. These students will be presented with their certificates at Friday s assembly. Year Three- Kobe J, Lucas M, Kate P, Charlie P, Romy P,, Ned S and Eric T. Year Four- Emei B, James H, Darren S and Zoe S. Year Five- Thomas B, Alannah F, Rose M, Hana S, Henrik T and Max T. Year Six- Xavier B, Stavros G, Teagan H, Chiraag N and Patrick S. Year Three/Four News The term is flying by and our students have been very busy. We are all looking forward to our excursion on December 3rd to the East Melbourne Synagogue and the Melbourne Museum, followed by our Movie Night. Permission slips are due back at school tomorrow, so please ensure you have returned both notes. We will then be able to confirm our parent helpers. Thank you to those who have already returned their notes. This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Liturgical year, which also means that next Sunday marks the beginning of Advent. It is hard to believe that once again we are preparing for the beautiful celebration of the Birth of Christ. Our students will be comparing the telling of the birth of Christ as told in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke and why this event is not mentioned in the Gospels of Mark and John. They will be investigating world religions, including Christianity, finding out about places of worship and if and how Christmas is celebrated by other religious cultures. Mathematics has been centred around patterns - repeating patterns and growing patterns and rules to create and continue a pattern. Our next Mathematics units are mass, volume and capacity. The final homework tasks for the year have been sent home this week. Thank you for the guidance and support you have given your child regarding his/her homework each fortnight. We would like our students to continue with their reading logs until the end of term. We also recommend that you encourage your child to continue with some regular reading during the holiday break. Books for Christmas or a visit to your local library during the holidays makes for an enjoyable outing. If you have not returned your swimming note regarding your child s swimming level, it needs to be returned tomorrow. This information is important to ensure your child is correctly grouped for his/her lessons and has to be sent off to PLC prior to our swimming program. Thank you, Mary and Sophie
